August 2016: What have you been reading?

After a couple of people in this very thread mentioned Connie Willis, I decided to try one of her books. Just finished Doomsday Book and absolutely loved it, so thank you for the recommendation (y). It took me a couple of chapters to get into but once I did, it was almost impossible to put down.

Yes I thought the first few chapters were its weakest but overall thoroughly enjoyed the book despite its being a bit bleak. Funnily enough I never went on to read any of the other ones; just not so interested in the later periods of history I suppose.

My reading seems to be jumping from style to style to an obtuse degree at present. I've gone from Fitzgerald to slightly pulpy SF and now I'm on Patrick Leigh Fermor's A Time of Gifts. I'm having to change gear too much for my brain. I think after this I'll settle on a style of book and stick with it for longer than a few days or I'll become increasingly discombobulated. I am enjoying the Fermor - even if my mindset is still with different genres.

Finished Diana Wynne Jones' The Dark Lord of Derkholm and volume 3 of Roger Zelazny's Amber series, Sign of the Unicorn.

I've been doing a back-to-back read-through of the entire Malazan Book of the Fallen series. I'm currently on The Bonehunters. This is roughly where I stalled out the first time when I was reading them as they were published. I'm getting far more out of reading it this way than I did when there were two years between books.

I'm also reading the Dragonriders of Pern series to my son. I love reading to both my wife and son, and sharing books that I read when I was younger. He's loving Pern so far, and we haven't even reached White Dragon yet.

Love the Amber series, but I find that Corwin's adventures interest me far more than his son Merlin's ever did. I'm not sure if it's the character or what, but there just wasn't a consistent thread of interest for him as there was for Corwin IMO.

I'm re-reading the first books, I read the first 2 many years ago. I find I'm a bit more critical now though I enjoyed book 2. I'm not viewing them as 'keepers' any more sadly.

The Pern series is still some of my favorite fantasy. My daughter read several of the Pern books in middle school, and dragons are still her favorite mystical creature. :)

I'm reading Katherine Kerr's Devery series. It a blast from the past and is a clear example how much Fantasy novels have changed stylistically. Because of this it was a hard slog to get into and I'm finding my progress slow but I am enjoying the tale
