Super (Secret) 8

I think I'd like a flight-capable sapient investigating human society (no, it's not a magpie I can see from my window - only a stupid pigeon. There will be seagulls along before long, though).

When will the POV (or whatever) limitations be maida valeable? I've already started on several of the themes (as is my wont) and even if having a plot in advance is convenient, being able to copy/paste large lumps of text is even more so.

What's the preference- do we set the tech craft thing this time or SS9.

I'd suggest if we do it this time, then each participant posts a tech craft/POV/ whatever and I choose one from the hat.

Any improvements on this suggestion? If not, requests by 11.59pm Sunday (work starts next week - sniff).

I'd leave the tech craft thing until the next one, or maybe make it a suggestion rather than a requirement. I'm still finding my feed with long-form and I'd like as much 'normal' practice as possible.

I think I've decided what I'd like: I'll take a near-future sci-fi story involving space flight/colonies within our solar system, please. Extra points (but strictly optional) for crunchy sciencey-stuff like plausible orbital mechanics.

I also vote for holding off the technical aspects. That way requests can be made with the aspect in mind.
(Not because I'm technically abusive to my text. No no. Not that at all.)

My request? Dule spirit guides. How do Orca and Margay coordinate to aid the human they are attached to? Is there conflict between them? Does their human know she's the subject of debate? Or do they refuse to speak to each other and offer her advice without knowing what the other says?
Genre? Is Mundane Fantasy a thing? You know; laundry sprites, garbage gnomes, the thing under the bed, closet monsters, kitchen fairies.... arguments with household appliances, where the appliance may or may not be capable of arguing back... That sort of genre.

Bonus points for including steamed-bean buns, in any way. Double Bonus if they sacrifice themselves for the greater good.

Treble bonus if you eat some in the course of writing, as a research exercise :)

I could probably figure out how to word that with fewer ?'s if my writer wants clarifications.

P.S. if you receive a request that you have questions about, pm the host with your questions and they'll ask for you (and relay the answer) so you don't out yourself to your recipient by asking direct.

We've never had a rule against starting early on requests you like. Even if you don't end up with the request, you may end up with a story you like. :) which can be submitted as a back up or kept and published as you please :)

I certainly hope so, as I have prepared each of the challenges like that. To which end:-

My request? Dule spirit guides.
Is that "dule" dual or duel? Either could give an interesting situation.

Because, TDZ, I'm scared if I take my eye off SG I'll not get back to it.

Also, whilst not wanting to appear a Debbie-Downer, I'd like to remind everyone that SS is at its heart a tool to improve our writing so try not to make the requests so prescriptive or limiting. I did not throw my hat in the ring (is that even the right image?) last time round because I was scared I might get one of the more outlandish requests and knew I'd be unable to do anything.

We have a track record of people asking to participate and then not finishing or even turning in stories; I think we need to make the SS as accessible as possible.

Additionally, if you choose to do another request for someone as well as your allocated one, it may be better if you submit it to them after the challenge so as not to confuse anyone (cough - me ;) ).

I think the next one (Jan??) will be the best to introduce the technical element bearing in mind the comments from participants so far...

Ahh, yes. I know what happens when you take your eyes off something. *cough*

As a stellar representative of that contingent who doesn't finish or turn in stories, I can see your point. I'm on the fence about this technical element thing. But then, I'm not really involved so much anymore (see above), so it doesn't matter what I think.

Who says you can't enter? Pick your favorite and then assign all the dregs to the riffraff ...err... I mean, throw your name in the hat and take a random chance with all the other fine entrants.
I think I entered the month I did it.

If still in time I would like a story about a couple in love faced with something speculative that will challenge that love forever. No cop out on the romance - you might be sff peeps, but we all need to know how to write people. :D

The technical thing should be optional, so it could still be mentioned in the story requirements. Keep in mind this challenge is more for the writer than for the reader, and it should be up to them to take up the extra effort points if they feel the exercise could strengthen their writing. But yeah, it should only ever be optional. Making it official could put a lot of potential participants off.

The one that means "two," like duet.
But if my writer wants to pun it up off my spelling choices I'm not opposed. ;)
There are few things I like better than a good pun.

Just finished my pre-guessing spreadsheet, and of the 13 requests there wasn't a one I didn't want to take a crack at. A fair few I know will super-stretch my capabilities! (Aside from dream-diary entries, I'm not much a horror writer. I've avoided the genre as much as possible to keep from giving my dream-maker anymore ideas than she's already got. *shudder* but she's been reasonably nice to me *knock on wood* the last few months, and tis the season *happy shrug*)

I'm tempted to start now and take my chances.
*eyes metaphorical blender* maybe even a mash-up or two...

I have a question, because I'm a noob: What if three people want to write same request?

In other words, does it work like this: I choose what all requests I want to write and send a message to the admin and then the admin will decide (out of those requests) which one is booked or not? =/
