Discussion Thread -- November 2016 75-word writing challenge

I know I have been in the basement rolling around in the muck of the "Trump Thread", but why 42?

I'm back - Isn't Google great. Hitch hikers guide to the Galaxy has the answer and it's a book well worth the read. So go out and buy a copy, or I get to shoot yer and you can join Santa on my list.

I'm assuming that this is your way to get us to Google "Why 42 is the answer." If not there is a true story as well, but it's been repeated by me on several occasions. A story which I will reiterate if there is a reason.

Here be Monsters, @Bowler1 – This story of a brave expedition to the extremes of the world ends with a harrowing account of unexpected revelations and the realisation that all is not as it first appears.

Crop of the pick, @farntfar – This vision of a future where the authorities can read your very thoughts tells the story of a sapper, digging tunnels for some clandestine operation. This time, it seems his attempts to go undetected may have gone too far.

The Mapmaker, @Culhwch – In the arid remnants of a post-apocalyptic world, knowledge and the willingness to share it is of greater worth than weapons or riches.

The Eyes Have It, @mosaix – The secret to winning a war quite literally goes up in smoke in this tale of ultimate sacrifice.

Yes, but don't blame me. I'm just a minion trying to please the MIGHTY CHRISPY and he mentioned 42 first. The MIGHTY CHRISPY can do as he pleases as far as I'm concerned, I know what it is to be smited (its a word according to Google the other mighty deity in my world (sad, I know)) by him.

This whole site is all about stories, so why ask, let me hear the tall tale. Anyway, I'm glad to see you bleary eyed and blinking in the light and another member who has managed to craw out from the Trump thread (that, or I've been lost to the Trump thread for too long, like some junky).

Glen -- A comic, wry look at the assumptions made in a particular kind of popular fiction.

chrispenycate -- An intricately crafted poem which makes use of verbal reflection and refraction to display its theme.

Dave Barsby -- A grim tale of obsession and its consequences for others.

Ursa major -- An ironic account of secrets kept and secrets revealed.

I honestly never partook in a competition like this and therefore have no idea what it is that I am doing.

And I honestly hope I am not late.

A powerful cautionary tale, Starbeast. I see where this must have been hard for you, but I'm happy you were able to post it, CC

(though I guess, sadly, it's a reality, more than a caution *sigh.:()

I have to say the talent on this website absolutely blows my mind, I hope one day I'm able to write like some of the people on here. What makes it even more remarkable is that it's all under 75 word which is amazing. I can't just imagine how much better these stories could be with 200 words or more. Kudos to everybody who submitted!!!

If you click on Forums at the top of any page, you can then drill down to Books and Writing, then Writing Forums, and you'll see Writing Challenges there. You'll find stickied posts at the top of Writing Challenges containing the Rules, currently running Challenges, and Rolls of Honour with all the previous winners. Right now, you can vote in this month's Challenge (go to the Poll thread stickied at the top), after you read the stories entered. The winner of the 75 each month gets to pick the next month's theme and genre. :)

December's Challenge will be posted around midnight of December 1st. Check out the Rules thread, and be sure to read the first post of the Challenge as well, for additional details. Feel free to ask any questions you may have, either in the Discussion thread (like this one) or privately to any staff member. Better safe than sorry!

The more the merrier, Classysturgeon! :)
