Why Babylon 5 is awesome

B5 was always my favourite, but I have another space for a little DS9.

I watched Severed Dreams last week on Pick. Still gets me, even after all of this time.

A few years ago I lent the entire series to a guy at work, who then got made redundant. I need to get the box set and rewatch this.

I also like both. I will say that B5 had a better 5 year story vision. It has one of the best overall series plotlines of all time.

I really enjoyed B5, I think I've watched it about 3 times now :p The whole thing is so rock solid in terms of how it treats it's universe and the story is just hammering it every episode, everything just works. I don't think there is a single wasted episode in B5.

Where as DS9, quite often devolves into episodes that really don't push things along and could be considered filler.
Star Trek's the same, mostly good but occasionally it throws in an episode that leaves you thinking.... hmmm did I really just sit through that?

Im a fan of Star Trek and B5 equally btw :p

Best DS9 episode In a Pale Moonlight .:D

I'm rewatching the whole thing and I'm just finishing season 2.

Why is Babylon 5 awesome? Londo and G'Kar. These characters are extremely well thought out. They are fully realized, three dimensional characters that grow, change and evolve throughout the series. While Londo turns out to be the darker character both have light and dark within them. Topping things off the actors Andreas Katsulas and Peter Jurasik are fantasic at their craft. Any show would be lucky to have one of these guys.

This is one reason but not the only one.

Londo and G'Kar

I love the way each can be a villain in one episode, and a hero in the next. Both sacrifice themselves in some way for their own peoples, yet neither is any kind of saint. Wonderful, conflicted characters. :)

Babylon 5 is great because what has came since is not always been great.

B5 was an amazing series and shows what shining gems TV writers can create if they are allowed to develop their story over more than one season. Nowadays it seems the studios only want to make a 'fast buck' and to keep each TV show fighting the others for the next season. Seems to me this just takes the writers energy away from the writing and focuses on what they think they can sell leading to inconsistency in quality between one season and the next. Very difficult to build up a fan base in the realms of Star Trek and B5.

While I appreciate the need for studios to recover the costs of making series' it seems that quality and future potential are often overlooked in preference to a quick pay day. Developing great characters like Londo, Vir and G'Kar (my personal favourites too) and great enemies like the Shadows takes time. It saddens me to think that we may never see the like of B5 again.

that was a good episode of touter limits i ha
He had a great mind for Sci-fi. He wrote Star Trek TOS episode City on the Edge of Forever. The idea for the Terminator also came from him. He had to sue to get his due but he won.

that was a good episode of outer limits..

One of the original appeals for me was they originally rendered the FX, including the spacecraft/B5 itself, on a big box Amiga computer - just like the one I had at the time.
Beyond that I really liked the grit of the characters and the ever developing, increasingly perilous story-lines. Every baddy had their own nemesis, including Londo and G'Kar.
BTW, have you ever seen a film called Star-Wreck? It makes fun of both B5 and Star Treck and I found it really fun to watch too. :D

I adore B5 beyond words. I re-watch once or twice a year, every year. The story and the characters' relationships with each other drew me in and keep me enthralled to this day. The practical effects are still top notch, in my opinion. For example, G'Kar's look never overshadows him and never limits his expression of emotion. With some shows I'm aware that the actor is wearing prosthetic makeup but I never felt that with B5.
