Discussion thread for 100-Word Anonymous Writing Challenge. March 2017.

Thanks for the steady hosting of this months challenge Farntfar :)

As usual, lots of top entries this month. Long may it continue!

Thanks for hosting, farntfar!

So here are my wild guesses (which I kept changing multiple times):

Damnation - Victoria Silverwolf
Gunman in the Night - Mosaix
The keen eye of the little yellow cardsharp - Chrispenycate
Where Credit’s Due - Vaz
Last shot - Cathbad
Low Noon - Farntfar
War lance - Coast
Knocking on Heaven's Door - vonHelldorf
Smoke signal - Cory Swanson
I'd Give It Ten Minutes Or So... - Luiglin
The Ballad of Iron Bladder - Starbeast
Greater Good Ghosts - TheDustyZebra
Fear and Loathing in Tombstone, Arizona - Hopewrites
The Far Horizon - Cat's Cradle
Devil Ether - Dannymcg
A hawk with no name - Ashleyne

Johnny. You have 2 correct.

And Ashleyne, I think you'll make a great host.
When the author of Greater Good Ghosts gives me the theme and the genre, I'll pass it along.

Or if you'd prefer, AuthorX, you can talk to Ashleyne directly.

We want magic ducks!

Congratulations to the author of "Greater Good Ghosts". (y)

And a huge WELL DONE to everyone who entered into the wild west. Yee-haw!

I'm not a good guesser, so I'll sit in the horse trough hot tub, and watch the tumble weeds blow by, while sipping an Acai berry drink. :p

@Ashleyne - Go for it.:)

My first attempt. Enjoyable. Maybe next time I'll get a vote!
Thanks for the experience

This is my 5th or 6th go, and I got two mentions...don't judge yourself by votes or mentions (no one else is going to). Figure out where your voicyness falls, look at the emotional process you went through while writing your piece. What did you learn about your editing process?

In my 75 this month I cut out some of the plot to keep a line I loved. (The last one, about human organs being gloopy and cloging the cogifyer)

Did the sacrifices you made add or detract from the connectivity or report you we're establishing with readers?

These are the sorts of questions we're banging our heads with, and the answers we come up with help us home our craft.

I wrote it and tweaked it over and over and really liked it. Did a word count and had 280!
Pruned it back again and again until I had 100 word story but that lost me all my careful research into the history of the West.
Learning curve for the future - there was too much info dumping even in such a short piece. - And no room for a magic duck.
(Additional learning curve ... 'd' and 'f' are beside each other on the keyboard and I almost had the ultimate bad typo)

Good advice from Hopewrites. One thing I've learnt from the 75, 100 and 300 is that there's no room to develop character - the story's the thing. Also bear in mind that, when it comes to voting, the Chroners will usually be reading all the stories at once, you have to have something that makes yours stand out, something that makes the reader stop and want ponder over it a bit more. That usually comes down to the title and / or the opening sentence.

I should add that what you don't want is a poor opening sentence. One that makes the reader think "I don't understand this" or "hmm, a bit like the last one".

You probably only have one chance, at the most two, to grab the reader and get onto their shortlist.

I promised the list of runners and riders on the 31st, and I think it's still the 31st in California so I'm not quite late.

Oh before that, the winning entry was by Ashleyne, so, as the next host, you've only got to talk to yourself about the theme and genre for May.
There's plenty of time 'til then, so keep trying, if you're out when you call.

(I thought I'd sent the previous post hours ago - come back and see it ghosted in the typing box. Sheesh.)

Congrats Ashleyne!

Thanks Cats, Luiglin and Farntfar for the mentions and votes this month :)
