DISCUSSION -- APRIL 2017 300-word Writing Challenge (#25)

Only 1.5 months till the next 300 worder!! I wonder what our next challenge picture will be like...
Well, it's possible you and everyone else might find out sooner than usual...

We're having discussions in the Staff Room about Things To Do With The Challenges and one option we're considering is having a poll for members to choose -- or at least recommend -- the 300 Worder image from a selection of 3 or 4. It does mean a little more work for us, getting permission from several different members to use the images and then setting up poll thread and monitoring it etc. And whereas when we choose we think carefully about other recent images so we try to pick something that has a very different feel, and yet will provide as many different types of story as possible, there might not be quite so much attention paid to that aspect by people voting. However, we thought it might enliven things a little, and perhaps encourage more members to take part in the 300s, which last year had a falling-off of entrants.

As I say, it's only an idea at the moment, but if it meets with general approval here, we can always test it to see how it works. In the meantime, we're always on the look-out for images we can use, so if anyone knows of any image that might work as inspiration, point us in the right direction or send a copy to one of the Challenge mods (preferably one who knows how to manipulate images, so not me!). We are acutely aware of copyright restrictions and the need to have permission to use images, so please, no trawling of internet sites and the like. We prefer images created by members here, so it is all home-grown, but we will consider (and have used) images created by friends/family if we're sure of the provenance. I'd personally like to see more paintings/drawings used as inspiration, as we've not had many of those, so artists among you, look out your creations!

Sounds like a cool wrinkle in the format. I must confess I like the challenge of being presented with a single image and going away to mull it over but anything that could potentially encourage more entries should be applauded.

Congratulations to @The Judge, by the way - a worthy victory. My heart tends to sink a little when I read entries like that as there's a certain magic to them - a feel of age or familiarity, as if it were a story that had been passed down over the years - that I feel is forever eluding me when I write. Nonetheless, it was a beguiling tale that only narrowly missed out on my vote so I wasn't surprised to see it up there.

My own tale, like many others it seems, was inspired by the whole 'blood on water' imagery that swam into my mind after staring at the picture for a while. That put me in mind of the water-filled shell holes of First World War battlefields and, after a false start or two, conjured the image of a survivor trudging through them. The rest emerged from there though it wasn't until I wrote down the word 'kinderkrieg' that it all finally fell into place. Thank you everyone for the lovely votes and mentions, they mean a lot.

First of all, congratulations to my judiciary compatriot. You really wrote an excellent story, and I would be genuinely surprised if any took offense to your work.

Also, thank you to all who mentioned my story, and especially to Ursa Major, RJM Corbet, Victoria Silverwolf, Hazelrah, Cory Swanson, and ChrisG for the votes. I never, in my wildest dreams, expected to get that many votes and mentions on my first 300 worder. This story was written as a tribute to my wife's grandmother, who passed earlier this year after a 5 year fight with Alzheimer's, but I wanted to keep that to myself until after the voting, lest I receive votes for the tribute, rather than the story on its own merits. I went back and forth if this would be considered speculative fiction or not, but as we really do not know what goes on in the mind of an Alzheimer's patient, to write from one's POV does seem speculative. For my future reference, is this an accurate statement, or was my first impulse right that this would not be within the genre?

Regarding voting for the picture, to be honest, I think it would make the challenge easier. I may be odd (and my wife would affirm that I, most certainly, am odd), but being my goal is to improve rather than win, I would prefer the challenge to be as difficult as possible. That being said, it really depends on the goal of the challenges. You will likely get a higher quality of stories with the higher difficulties, but more stories with lower difficulty.

Either way, I intend to contribute to future challenges, and will participate in the voting, should you choose to go that route.

It was a great twist and a unique perspective. I always love the ones that take a tack that is completely left of everyone else. After all the blood and gore, yours had a sweetness to it.

For me, personally, it didn't meet the speculative fiction requirement, no. "Speculative" so far as genre is concerned was never meant to imply simple speculation about how others see the world, but rather as a catch-all term for stories that might not fall into the narrow confines of either SF or fantasy. But as I mentioned earlier in the thread in reply to RJM, each member approaches voting in a different way, and the fact you had so many votes and mentions means that other people clearly thought it came within the genre (or they didn't care if it did or not).

That's not something that occurred to me. If we wrapped up voting for the image in the last week before the start of the next 300 Worder, it would obviously give members a few extra days to contemplate the chosen image and start the mental gears engaging to produce a story, but I'm not sure that actually makes things easier! We mods know in advance which image is going to be used (though sometimes only a day in advance as decision-making can be protracted...) but I'm not the only one who usually doesn't get any inspiration until the last day or so. Difficulty for me is actually getting an idea in the first place, and I have that problem with almost every image we pick!

Anyway, we'll see how it goes. If the poll idea doesn't prove a success, for instance if we don't get many people voting or commenting on the choice of images, or the members' choices produce fewer stories not more, then we can easily go back to the old system.

By the way, Joshua, we have a "Improving..." thread for the 300s, as well as for the 75s, so if you want feedback on this story (though with so many votes I'm not sure you do!) feel free to post it there.

Now I'm over my hissy fit and I've cast my last juju on you all, I would like to say thank you so much for all the votes. It seems whinging gets me more votes so I hereby promise to do it more.

Seriously, though, congratualtions to my nemesis and Yoda; The Judge. I can't think of a better person to be beaten by - apart from that guy who wrote about the scarey clown... I just wish I hadn't voted I'm just glad I voted for her. Clearly I am genetically predisposed to altruism. :p

I had a dream about the image shortly after it was put up. It was something really exciting but I failed to make notes and then forgot about it. Tooth fairy is what I ended up with instead. It was/is an existing idea I had discussed with @Boneman at one of the Chrons meets last year, where the tooth fairy doesn't give a kid money, so when he is old she owes him millions. There wasn't enough time to do that justice in 300 words so it went to horror.

This sort of thing always makes me really paranoid. :D

Me too. I always bimble around when I've posted an entry wondering if it fits the genre, or if my overuse of semicolons will get me sacked, etc. :D

Ohhhh @Phyrebrat so close! Commiserations and a sneaky slice of the staff room cake. And a pretty dress, too. Is pink your color?

Funnily enough, I tend to wear pink a lot. Pink and blue. Anyone who's been on a chrons meet will testify to that. Wait, these are boys, aren't they; they'll have no memory of what I was wearing #GenderStereotyping ;) Anyhow, I was just delighted the bridesmaid livery is no longer yellow. Yellow looks bad on me. (I mean, I can do 'yolk' of course, we all can.)

My Tale: I've been wanting to do another Kolchak: The Night Stalker story for a while, and I got my chance. I've written two other Kolchak tales elsewhere (a few years back), and I got the idea while trying to think of a "crime solver", in my horror tale.

Actor Darren McGavin

I've been a fan of the TV series since it first aired in the 1970's, beginning with two movies:
The Night Stalker and The Night Strangler.

Snap!!! I've been watching this series in bed on the iPad. I love the feel of it, and the barefaced chauvinism of him. It's hilarious. I really like old things like this. Some of it is really dark!

You can't scare me. I was dead already.

Wait, you mean I've had a spirit Facebook friend all this time without realising!? I've missed out on boast points! A spirit friend!

Finally, on the three-pics suggestion, my take is 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it.' But then on the other hand, I'm always up for giving theMods more work ;)

Fair enough. Like I said, my first impulse was that it was not, but my writing prior to discovering this group was in the pretty narrow field of hard SF, non-fiction (theology and philosophy, grant writing, CV assistance, and other, similarly boring things), and metered poetry, so I am still learning some definitions within the larger canopy of speculative fiction.

Thank you for making me aware of this thread. I probably will post this story into there, as well as the overwhelming majority of my future stories, until it gets tedious for everyone. In my mind, even if I were to win a challenge, there is surely improvement possible, or at least ideas of different directions I could have taken it (such as your idea to change POV in my April 75 worder; I really like the result of that change). So, as long as I don't become burdensome to the general membership, I will be posting frequently in the improving threads.

Where to begin?

Well obviously there is a big congratulations to throw in TJ's direction.

Followed by a very grateful thank you to Mr Orange & Heijan Xavier for the votes. It looked as though I was going to pass the challenge without a vote so it was great to see them this morning. (I'd also like to say a quick thanks to everyone who mentioned mine)

I stealth voted for Cathbad, Luiglin and Phyre, all of which appealed to me, but Phyre's deserves a special mention as I knew I was going to vote for it the moment I saw it.

Finally... my story was not what I originally intended, becoming an (perhaps personal) examination of depression and those moments that can come out of nowhere that, even for a moment, make everything alright for no apparent reason.

That's what I admired about the Carl Kolchak character, he was a little fearful, but very brave. He truly wanted to stop the murdering madmen and monsters, by putting himself on the line. He definitely went beyond the call of duty as a newspaper reporter.

BTW, if anyone is a fan of Kolchak, and in Chicago, take a ride on the "L" train, you'll go right by the location of Kolchak's office window (as seen in the episodes). I've been past it a few times. And I still imagine, Carl behind his desk typing a strange story, that he finished investigating (along with the letters "INS" on the window).

Congratulations to The Judge & thanks to the folk who voted for me & gave me a mention. I am humbled in such esteemed company.

Back to my vacation

Congrats Judge! Commiserations Phyre, but my ghoulish heart did vote for you so I get to live for a while longer at least.

Thanks to everyone who mentioned and voted for my story! I really enjoyed writing this one. The usual irony is that I spent much longer writing this one and liked it much more than my 75 word story in April, and yet which one won...

I'm glad people mentioned Bradbury in relation to my story as that was what I was going for. Though I did originally have a lost sister in the story but thought I'd better change to a brother as an old woman in a red coat turning around suddenly had been done before, if I rightly recall ;)

Public Service Announcement:

You're all dead to me

Bwahahahaha.

Seems only fitting to open my congrats to The Judge with that. :)

In other news: oh yeah, I got two votes. Amazing.

Picture sent my imagination straight to that awful-but-visually-memorable Venice/red-hooded kid film from ages ago. When wrestled off that, it came up with this modern spin on changeling/faerie-taken mythology.

Congrats to the Judge and commiserations to Phyre. My bridesmaids dress was getting kind of dirty, so I'm glad you can get some use out of it.

I had a disappointing outing compared to the last three, but I was due for a slump. Thanks to those who mentioned and voted for my story. I think this was a lesson on impatience for me. I wrote it and put it up one night and then read it back the next day and though, "I could have done better." I posted fairly early and had lots of time to contemplate its doom. The idea was good in my head, but I should have started it over and made it more clear and less esoteric. For once, I was punished for going so far out on a limb that I couldn't bring it back.

I prefer the 300, and I sincerely wish it was the monthly challenge rather than the 75. I can write so much better with a little more wiggle room.
