DISCUSSION -- APRIL 2017 300-word Writing Challenge (#25)

Writing stories sure is fun, isn't it? I bet you want to write another one right now, don't you? Well why don't you enter the 100 Word Anonymous Competition? All you have to do is write a Sci-fi story, 100 words or under, surround the theme of madness. When you've finished, send me the story by Private Message and I'll post it on your behalf. With your help, we can reach our 80 story target.

Or maybe you need a break from writing stories. If so, why not send me a message to put your name through as a red herring. Your name could be used to help mislead people during the guessing portion of the Anonymous Competition.

While I'm here, I might as well share my shortlist and votes, so here goes.

Shortlist:

Cory Swanson

Star beast

Luiglin

HoopyFrood

Votes:

Peter V

Phyrebrat

Starbeast

A massive thanks to anyone who mentioned or listed my story, and an extra special thanks for the vote, Starbeast. You're a beast of a star!

opuscosmos -- The use of vivid sensory details allows the reader to fully empathize with a viewpoint character of an unusual kind.

ErikB -- This powerful fable forces us to consider our own thoughtless actions and their consequences.

Stable -- By creating a modern myth, the author offers an allegory of the importance of decisiveness.

Phyrebrat -- An old legend is brought to life in a chilling new way in this tale of terror.

Thanks for the feedback Victoria Silverwolf, its a great feeling when somebody actually reads your work, much appreciated and have a wonderful day!

I should be inured to the way you lot can turn the most pleasant of topics or images into some kind of blood-fest, but I was gobsmacked at the number of near-deaths, mutilations, drownings, slayings and general bloody unpleasantness in the stories here! Is it so hard to write something sweet and optimistic?!! (Said the woman who wrote about genocide for the theme of Innocence... ;))

Anyhow, faced with the welter of gore, when I drew up my shortlist I paid especial attention to stories which resisted the lure of blood, but inevitably some of the horror sneaked in. There were one or two stories I enjoyed, but I felt were lacking in plot/story line, and one piece I greatly liked but which didn't meet my speculative fiction definition. So my list, a little longer than usual:

AlexH -- Stay Away from the Red Coats
Cat's Cradle -- The Robe and the Arrowhead
chrispenycate -- The beginning of the End
HazelRah -- Halja in a Handbasket
Hoopy -- In Town For One Night Only
LittleStar -- May Day
mosaix -- On Reflection
Phyrebrat -- She Always Gets Her Teeth
Rafellin -- Jesse's Hand
Stable -- Never Meet Your Heroes
Victoria -- The Awakening

The Bradburyesque tale from Hoopy gave me shivers so that got my first vote, and I loved the voice and sheer love of life in the mayfly's story by LittleStar, so that got the second. I was then rather stuck as to where to place my third vote, with so many good stories vying for it, but in the end, after a good deal of to-ing and fro-ing I plumped for HazelRah's inversion of Little Red Riding Hood.

Rosemary-scented dew-of-the-sea thanks for the mentions and shortlistings Cathbad, Vaz, johnnyjet, Starbeast and Shyrka and seal-sleek crimson-coated mega-thanks for the lovely votes, openly proclaimed by TDZ, Stable, Cat's, Phyrebrat, and stealthed by nixie, ratsy, Titanium Ti, Wruter, and Alex D!

Not much time and from my list (which, as always, is no more infallible than its creator) from those who submitted to this challenge ErikB, farntfar, Heijan Xavier, Jason McGraw, LittleStar, opuscosmos and Ursa major had not yet voted. Against that ChrisG. Ensign Shah, Hugh, Lumens, nixie, and Teresa Edgerton none of whom had submitted all voted (many thanks).

Yippee! I have six (count them, six) votes from:- Hugh, johnnyjet, Shyrka, Starbeast, Talysia and Vaz. HUGs!!

This sort of thing always makes me really paranoid. :D

No worries from me pal. I look beyond mistakes. I noticed a few typos out there, even I made one. Typos never effect my judgement.

Votes: Starbeast

A massive thanks to anyone who mentioned or listed my story, and an extra special thanks for the vote, Starbeast. You're a beast of a star!

(bows) Thank you for the compliment Lady Ashleyne (and vote :ROFLMAO: Wheeeeee!). And you are an fantastic writer. Stay awesome.

Rosemary-scented dew-of-the-sea thanks for the mention Starbeast

You're very welcome Lady Judge.

I somewhat agree with your observation. I noticed one X-Mas (years ago), I was one of the few that wrote a nice tale, while the rest were shocking horror. I was a little confused by that, but then I thought, "why not?" So, one X-mas, I wrote an incredibly gory tale....and surprisingly, I was the only one. It's the luck-of-the-draw, I suppose.

But today, I write whatever I want, and still without looking at the competition, first. Plus, I enjoy, all genres.

Yippee! I have six (count them, six) votes from:- Hugh, johnnyjet, Shyrka, Starbeast, Talysia and Vaz. HUGs!!

You're immensely welcome Chrispenycate. You have an astonishing way with words, my friend. (y)
