A Royal Affair

“It’s your ball. You have to go. Besides, you might meet a nice girl.”

“Mother, why would I want to marry a girl who likes dancing? Miserable — for both of us. I’m going to the library.”

***

In a modest house across town:

“Son, are you going to the prince’s ball?”

“Mum, I adore the prince’s balls, and I must go to work.”

“How can you ever find love, working at the library?”

“You’d be surprised.”

All the World's a Stage

"To make you better able to deal...with things."
Mother's explanation for the little theatre shows we did.
But it was never for us.

Lost lovers, betrayed heroines, misunderstood poets.
What did we know of such things?

We knew. Children though we were, we knew.
But we played along.

We knew the game we played was 'stop Mummy from crying.'

We played it solemnly, ferverently, intently.

We played it from love.

We're playing it still...

The Olympian Playa’

I see you checking me out. You’re telling yourself that I’m too old for you, but you can’t help wondering what I look like under this toga. That’s right, come to papa.

I used to miss out. It’s too easy to land a girl when you fly into her bedroom as an eagle. This took more skill. Here she comes, don’t act too interested.

The tavern door crashed open.

“Hera, Dear! I was just leaving!”

Ouija

The wireless shouted about ‘The Great War’. Two weeks before he left for the front, Robert had put the idea in Emmett’s head. A cheeky grin saying, “D'ya know, my sister thinks she can talk to ghosts?”

The ouija board at the market was a sign. It was a game, Em didn’t believe, until-

R-O-B.
G-A-S.
I-L-O-V-E-Y-O-U.
Goodbye.

Rob’s sister brought the telegram up three days later.

Deeply regret to inform you…

The Lonely Princess

“Back by eleven, father? It’s so unfair!” Perhaps; but unavoidable. “I’ll have to leave my very first Ball before everyone else.”

But she didn’t: all of the young princes and princesses left before she did, each blaming royal etiquette. They knew no better.

“So how was it?” I asked.

“Exhausting. They were all leaping about. I could hardly keep up.”

My spell needed adjustment, obviously. Swapping frogs for less athletic creatures should work.
