DISCUSSION -- March 2018 -- 75 Word Story Challenge

The level of guilt that would over take me if I didn't vote would be akin to be crushed by the kind of gravity that the heart of Jupiter can offer.

I'm having a final read through this evening and the vote should be in before the kids go to bed. :D

Some good stories this month, as ever, but I've trimmed my shortlist to a magnificent seven (I know Westerns is wrong theme, but I couldn't think of anything steampunky!):

Cat's Cradle -- Prior to the Warranty Claim
CTRandall -- Pride comes before
Joshua Jones -- Pretty When You Smile
LittleStar -- Gravity
Mr Orange -- Untitled
paranoid marvin -- Dead Ahead
Victoria Silverwolf -- Population Problem

A difficult choice this, which came down to a four-way battle between CC, CTR, Mr O and pm, but after much cogitating CTRandall won my vote for his poignant PS.

I found this Challenge really difficult, had no ideas at all and wasn't happy with what I managed to produce at the last minute, so thanks for the breathtaking pulchritudinous mentions and shortlistings Stable, Peter, Phyrebrat, Starbeast, Cat's Cradle, Shyrka, Joshua, and Chris p!

Lots of tractive effort went into this month's stories, requiring the Ursa jury to to work hard to produce this month's list (in which the stories are in posting order within the categories):

Honourable Mentions:

  • The First Automaton on the Earth by Luiglin
  • Judicial Enquiry into the Second Venusian Campaign (Aborted).... by Peter V
  • Pride comes before by CTRandall
  • On The Cogship Regina by Stable

Runners Up:
  • Steam Punked by Parson
  • Population Problem by Victoria Silverwolf
  • Per Aspera by TheDustyZebra

Winner:
  • From Red to Blue by mosaix

Thanks UM :)

I’d had hardly a mention this month and given up on getting a vote. Getting one so late makes it that much sweeter.

Thanks muchly to all who've mentioned my story thus far, and a great thanks to Shyrka for the vote and kind words:D:cool:

My own voting just sneaks under the clock, and I've gone for Victoria this month, though both Parson and TDZ were close behind. Well done everyone(y):)

Congratulations TDZ! Don't forget your hat. ;)

------

My story originated when I started thinking about the near impossibility of a steam powered space ship. --- I know, I know, we're dealing with fiction here. --- Anyway, I thought about how someone might try to pretend that they were flying in space, and then my mind went to the ubiquitous urban myth about the "fake moon landing." As I was putting the finishing touches on the story all of a sudden, the title popped into my head and I rushed to put my story up because the name was just too rich and I didn't want to seem to be copying someone else.

just duct tape some gears to the side, she'll be right mate.

Congratulations @TheDustyZebra.

Thanks again for the vote @Pedro Del Mar and the mentions folks :)

When I saw the theme and genre I immediately thought of HG Wells and Jules Verne. Both were writing steampunk before the term/genre was invented (although both would no doubt have argued that they were not, especially Verne). Both had Earth to Moon stories. However, I loved (and still do) the 1964 First Men in the Moon film starring Lionel Jeffries. That led me onto the idea of what if Mr Cavor continued his inventing on the moon after the original story ended, creating a steam powered automaton who returned his ashes back home to Earth upon his death. Naturally, the automaton had to be named Lionel and the title a reversal of the original.

Congrats Dusty Zebra, great job!
Parson, also a great job, almost made it.

Thanks Luiglin for the vote, glad you liked my story.
Thanks to Hugh, Glen, Starbeast, Cats Cradle and Chris for the listings.

Thanks to Parson and Victoria for reviews.

If I read correctly there has to be a special mention for Pedro Del Mar for " first ever vote" , good job.

I wanted to put up a tough challenge, then I thought that the stories would write themselves. After a slow start I had second thoughts, then I had trouble with my own story, what a month!

Hope everyone had fun, it's all yours Dusty.
