Discussion Thread -- April 2018 75-word Writing Challenge

This month's voting, from this far in, feels like the story about the little girl saving starfish on the beach. You can't make any difference, but it makes a difference to that one. :D And, of course, shortlisting always makes a difference to that one and that one and that one...

Cul -- Best Kept Secret
Phyre -- Your Place or Mine?
mosaix -- Who's Who?
Victoria -- The Heist
Mr O -- Bunny Goes to a Play
Dan -- The Ministry of Identitarian Maintenance
johnnyjet -- The Mirror of Space
CTR -- Biometrics
Hoopy -- Thumbs Up
*s.d. Ervin -- The Bluebird*

spoots -- Fit the Job
Moonbat -- On-line Identity
Shyrka -- And there shall come a king among men...
TJ -- Fall from Grace
Teresa -- Family Secret...

Got it down to two, but now I am torn between Hoopy's Thumbs Up, and TDZ's Skin Deep.

Love both these very different stories, for different reasons. It's coin toss time.

As I type this, I doubt that there is much doubt about the identity of the winning story (or its author, for that matter), but that doesn't mean the Ursa Jury won't be producing a list this month (a list in which the stories are in posting order within the categories):

Honourable Mentions:

  • Best Kept Secret by Culhwch
  • Who’s Who? by mosaix
  • Biometrics by CTRandall
  • On-line Identity by Moonbat

Runners Up:
  • The Mirror of Space by johnnyjet
  • The Bluebird by s.d. Ervin
  • Fall from Grace by The Judge

Winner:
  • Thumbs up by HoopyFrood

Closed? I thought it was closed midnight of the 29th? I'd been looking forward to reading them through with my Sunday morning Bacon sarnie.

Damn, sorry about that folks.

Congratulations @HoopyFrood; an excellent story and well deserved win.

A huge thank you to those who shortlisted me and to @Heijan Xavier and @kythe for the votes! I am glad you enjoyed my story and humbled that you chose to recognize it with either mentions or votes.

Oh damn... I got gmt mixed up. Or rather how NZ time relates to it. I thought I had another 10 minutes to vote but forgot we're out of daylight savings over here so it's bang on 12 hours difference, not 13.

My vote would have gone to @Starbeast if I had got it in.

Congrats @HoopyFrood on the close win. A great story and well deserved .

And thanks for those that mentioned my messed up tale.

Noooo not again! :p

But no. It's always the end of the 28th. Sorry.

And huge congratulations to Secretariat ... err ... I mean Hoopy! :D

I can see where I went stupid. I'd been looking through the 300s and that's titled 29 April. Must have stuck in my head. I've had a real bad week.

I'll still read them through and post my top three in the morning.

Congrats Hoopy, for a while I thought you and I would be having a tie breaker, but then people started voting.

I would like to say this about voting methods, I read all the stories three times but only two stuck with me. A lot of the stories I just didn't understand, so vote to Starbeast, runner up Heijan, got a good chuckle from each.

Congratulations @HoopyFrood! There hasn't been that kind of a landslide since '84.

You're welcome @Joshua Jones. Your story was very clever.

Thank you @Bob Senior, @CTRandall, @Parson, @unbusy thing for the mentions. Glad to be able to make y'all chuckle. The final line was a 4:00 am decision and post without sleeping on it. Wondering if I would make it a bit more high-brow if I could do it over again. Probably not.

Well done HoopyFrood.
A creepy little story :)

It made me think of this 1 minute Experian advert

Many Congratulations HoopyFrood !!

And many many thanks to HazelRah, Peter V, CTRandall, Teresa Edgerton, and Cat's Cradle, for the mentions.
And particular thanks to The Judge for the award of "Best Pastiche Prize".
