Discussion Thread -- April 2018 75-word Writing Challenge

I'm back, but I'm sorry I didn't see @dannymcg helpful guide to voting.

There were once again many stories deserving a mention, but I limited myself to this shortlist of the best of the best (as I see it.)

@Cathbad "I Think .... But Who Am I?" Wonderfully framed dilemma
@mosaix "Who's Who" Sinister SF for sure!
@The Judge "Fall From Grace" Another in a long line of cracker jack stories!
@HazelRah "I Carry You in my Heart" a real tear jerker, just my kind of story.

But.... To no one's surprise and certainly not mine, my vote goes to

@HoopyFrood .... "Thumbs Up" This was a contemporary masterpiece and so in touch with the current world wide craze/dilemma.

Special Reward

@Heijan Xavier
for a wonderfully horrific pun .... "They'll Be Checking ID"

I think the "open" genre is great and should be used to spread your writing horizons, get out of your comfort zone occasionally. From the inner mind to the Outer Limits.(cue music).
I regret my early entry because of an idea I had about identical twins battling for supremacy in the womb. It's an absorbing story that gives MMA Fighting a new meaning; "Middle of Mommy Arena"
My vote and shortlist is based strictly on emotion and how long a story stays with me. I don't worry about punctuation and rules cause I'll probably be wrong and stories this short require compromises.

Dementia: Bravo, I ache.
What's in a name: Not the only time he has been annoyed with us, I'm sure.
Best kept secret: Aren't they all?
Remembering Edgar: Poe is one of the greatest. Note:autocorrect changed it to "Pie is one of the greatest" I can't argue.
Biometrics: Not negligible
The Stranger: Good Journey
Haunted: Love lost.
I carry you in my heart: Bravo, I ache again

Vote goes to; On-line Identity: Funny is good, satire is good, Funny Satire is great!
As usual, all the stories were worth reading. Have a good day.

Having trouble choosing a story in the April 75 word challenge?

An easy solution is to scroll rapidly down the list to, oh I don't know, say story number 18 for arguments sake, click on it and you're sorted.

Try it, you'll feel so much better :)

To save the Mods time I thought that I'd better add a correction for @dannymcg in that it should be 21 and not 18 ;)

A good crop of stories we have this month, but choose we must:sick:

Shortlist:-
Cullwch
Victoria
Johnnyjet
CTRandall
Shyrka

Finalists:-
Dan
HazelRah

But my vote goes to HoopyFrood this month, for all the truth packed into 75 words of SF fiction(y)

Oh, and much apologies to TDZ for the title theft:confused::eek:

Thanks @Moonbat and @johnnyjet for the votes!

My shortlist: Joshua James "What's in a Name, Heijan Xavier "They'll be checking ID", M Robert Gibson "Crisis", Dan Jones "The Ministry of Identitarian Maintenance", unbusy thing "Them and us"

I almost wish there was an extra category for verse, as I loved several of the poetic takes on the theme (@Hugh and @Mr Orange). There were also a ton of really well-written stories this time--tough to make a properly "short" list!

Vote: Hoopy Frood "Thumbs up"

There were many stories I enjoyed this month, including those by Hugh, Phyrebrat, mosaix, Heijan Xavier, and M. Robert Gibson...the entries of Dan Jones, Graymalkin, CTRandall, and s.d. Ervin...those of Parson, TDZ, Moonbat, TJ, and Ursa...but there was one that I loved (and was very jealous of) from the first moment I read it, and that is HoopyFrood's wonderful Thumbs up. I think that last line is brutal, and brilliant. So, there's my vote. :)

Thank you to nixie and Hugh for the listings!

My personal favorites:

Dannymcg - true!
Dan Jones - quirky
CT Randall - a nightmare

I voted for Joshua Jones - a "believable" take on a Biblical story.

Well, everyone hit the genre this month! I wasn't quite so sure about the theme for some of them, though, and as ever there were a few that I didn't understand even on a third read. But my shortlist for the month is:

Cathbad -- I Think... but Am I?
Cat's Cradle -- A Niggle then a Wiggle...
Dan Jones -- The Ministry of Identitarian Maintenance
johnnyjet-- The Mirror of Space
Luiglin -- Haunted
s. d. Ervin -- The Bluebird
Teresa Edgerton -- The Family...
TheDustyZebra -- Skin Deep

I loved Teresa's take on Zorro, but she was just pipped to the vote by Luiglin's haunting SF.

And two special prizes: the best pastiche prize to Hugh his wonderful riff on The Walrus and the Carpenter, and the cryptic-est puzzle prize to paranoid marvin for Lust for Glory!

I enjoyed writing about Holmes and Watson again, so I'm glad they attracted some attention. Far-from-Elementary thanks for the mentions and shortlistings nixie, Joshua, Peter, johnnyjet, Parson, Teresa and CC and thunderous Falls thanks for the lovely vote M Robert Gibson, and for the stealth vote mosaix (which I think is the first I've ever received from you outside a tie-break!)!
