Discussion Thread -- June 2018 75-word Writing Challenge

@Parson thank you. Though I don't know the Oz reference.

The Wicked Witch of the West is destroyed when water is accidentally splashed on her. When Dorothy and her friends return to the Wizard, the witch's end was mentioned and then the Wizard says: "So you liquefied her."

@Phyrebrat .... What Parents Cannot Fix .... The Brat brings us a terror ridden truth: "Any great scientific break through can be weaponized.

@Luiglin .... Whole world in His hands .... Luiglin shows us a true horror with the prince of darkness and social media.

@Shyrka .... Purgatory .... Shyrka gives us a scream worthy thought of being trapped in a body.

@chrispenycate .... The new Promethian .... When the gods, fire, and knowledge merge the results for humans are not altogether pleasing.

@Dan Jones .... Turtles All The Way Down .... Dan reminds us that weapons can be turned on their creators. ..... He also gives the perfect quote for us Chronites: please god let me out there must be an exit somewhere :)

Sorry Parson, and to anyone who might find the Challenge genre offensive, or uninspiring. :( I've written, I think, some of my best Challenge stories when I was writing outside of my comfort zone, but I hadn't considered that this was a genre that might prove unpopular.

Are there other ways to approach this Challenge? Though I went bloody/gross-out, there are other types of horror. But apologies if this month is too much of a downer for folks.

The genre is fine, CC. Horror is in the imagination of the reader. All the writer has to do is create enough for that imagination to work without the story itself necessarily being horrific. For some people it can be spiders or snakes. For others a visit to the dentist.

Whether that works or not will show up when the poll goes up. :)

No, you were rightfully slapped. You were wrong about your story and abilities.

Now there's a genre we haven't seen, Slapstick! Before anyone states the obvious, this is a talented bunch and can put it to the written word. Nyuk, nyuk, nyuk, woowoo, woowoo, boing!

As long as it be stretched to include good old fashioned innuendo.

chrispenycate -- As another poet reminded us, a little knowledge is a dangerous thing.

Dan Jones -- What we imagine can be more harmful than what is real.

Mr Orange -- The weapon to end all wars might be worse than what it is meant to cure.

Fivestrings -- It's not always easy to determine who is servant and who is master.

@Mr Orange .... Death of Innocents .... Mr. Orange shows the horror of the bomb in verse hoping to make us all adverse.

@Fivestrings .... An Android was meant to make life easier .... Fivestrings gives us a story that's both common and a gruesome horror at the same time because common tasks can become truly a horror.

Welcome fivestrings! nice to have aboard!

And with these stories we've reached the magic number of the 75.... 42! Do I hear 50?

Not so fast... 42 posts is 41 stories. Dangit, *that's* why I wanted to get mine in tonight, after I saw that. Alas, I'm too sleepy to write it tonight, so I'll have to rely on tomorrow afternoon. And let TJ pip me to the 42. Again.

Frizzle, Frazzle,
Mizzle, Mazzle

It's 12:30 am and my thinkers gone to sleep.

Although rushed and not as easy as i thought it would be...I enjoyed it! My first go must have been at least 50 words over! not easy whittling that down, but great practice for getting back into things.

Will sit down later and read the rest of the stories.
How exactly does a new boy vote?

For me, of course! :)

Kidding aside, they will post a poll thread when the challenge closes where you may choose a story based on whatever criteria you go for. Some people vote based on what catches their eye for some reason, others have charts for mapping how closely the story matches the theme and genre, skill, clarity, and so forth. Be as formal or informal as you wish.

And, as others have said, welcome to the Challenges!

I probably shouldn't have versified horror - adding rhythm and rhyme makes it cheerful and bouncy. But once I'd started I'm too pigheaded to back down.

Shouldn't be any difficulty getting to this 42, seeing we're only short one story and: Ashleyne, CTRandal, Culhwch, LittleStar, Paranoid Marvin, The Judge, TheDustyZebra and Ursa major have yet to submit (Ashleyne late on horror?!)

Parson and Victoria - thanks for the commentary

Fivestrings (is that a banjo I see before me?) I trust I din't bully you too hard to get you here? Nice to see you, anyway.
