Game of Thrones: 8.03 - The Long Night

Not having formal outlining doesn’t equal not knowing where you’re going
Yeah GRRM has said he knows all the broad strokes.
The show runners said back about 4 years ago the story would land at the same place.
However with the last few months they have said the landing may be more approximate than exact.
So to speak.

Recent news Kit Harrington says that episode 4 has quite a twist in in.
and Emilia is saying that episode 5 will be bigger than Episode 3!
Surprises are fine with me, especially when you can't figure them out!

While predictions can often be wrong, I wouldn't say we can't figure it out. In fact, I suspect I might know what that twist is. ;)

Since it's Kit saying it, and we know he is Jon in the show, and we know Jon is Aegon Targaryen...

For those of us who have read the books, it would be easy to predict something could happen with the Golden Company in the coming episodes that is related to Aegon Targaryen... it is after all, the hottest theory going around at the moment...

Really?

this is what I’ve been waiting seven laborious seasons for and it’s over in one episode, in the dark and with stuff that we’d be lambasted for as authors here.

Sorry to be the odd one out here. There was stuff I loved - mostly human and character stuff - but ‘Winter is Coming’ which has been the guarantor of this series for me was a total let down.

Hardhome was a better battle to watch. Okay. Slaughter. But far better.

Daenerys proves she’s nothing without draginz and the most 2D character in this.

God, I feel like a toxic Star Wars fan moaning about the sequels so I’ll shut up.

It was enjoyable. The preparations were great and far more interesting than the actual battle.

I don't think either of those statements are really true. But, assuming that they are true, then the result is a massive anti-climax in which Sansa sits on the Iron Throne at the end with her entire family (and the dragons and Daenerys) dead. A sort of "bittersweet" resolution (especially since a "Sansa" is a type of apple.)

Here is one of the news reports, there were others:

From the panel discussion at the Oxford Union in 2015
Watch the whole event here:

Benioff said:
"Luckily, we’ve been talking about this with George for a long time, ever since we saw this could happen, and we know where things are heading. We’ll eventually, basically, meet up at pretty much the same place where George is going. There might be a few deviations along the route, but we’re heading towards the same destination. I kind of wish that there were some things we didn’t have to spoil (for the books), but we’re kind of stuck between a rock and a hard place/…/ I think the thing that’s kind of fun for George is the idea that he can still have surprises for people even once they’ve watched the show through to the conclusion. There are certain things that are going to happen in the books that are different in the show, and I think people who love the show and want to know more about the characters, want to know more about the different characters who might not have made the cut for the show —will be able to turn to the books."

I also thought Battle of the Bastards was better, another Sapochnik directed episode.
Despite flaws I was completely entertained.
It has been pointed out, many times, that Game of Thrones , is totally different than any other TV show on right now.
It has done it with enough quality story and in particular production design.
I only watch on TV now GoT and The Expanse, even tho I have watched shows I thought were great.
I watched the first season of Breaking Bad and some later episodes , I thought it was excellent, however, it did not pull me in, so I never finished it.
In recent times the only shows I have watched all the way through were True Detective , but that had a poor ending....
and first season of Fargo , TV series, that I loved! Mainly due to Billy Bob Thronton's performance.

Starz seemed to competing with GoT with Camelot. Man that had a good cast , especially Eva Green... but very poor teleplay writing.

Amazon paid a kings ransom for Lord of the Rings, god only knows what might be made of that!

The plot choices made here were baffling to me.
I was hoping that

the night king would take over winterfell and kill a few major characters, allowing for a sneak counterattack next episode from the survivors. Its pretty anticlimactic as it is

Before the episode, i was pretty certain winterfell was going to fall as well. Forcing the remnants to join up with the ironborn, tully's and whomever else of the world, in a last succesful stand. But the way the episode progressed it became clear that escape from winterfell was impossible, and it would somehow be resolved then and there.

I think you could be right, but I don't think it could be in ep 04 - as far as I can recall there have been no precursors to this, and not even the explanation of the origin of the Golden Company that would be needed for this to be believable. I'm talking about the TV show only, I know this is gone over in detail in the books. I think it would need ep 04 for setup with the payoff in 05

I was thinking about ep 04 tonight and realized that after ep 03 I am not as invested in the rest of the season as I was before. I'll watch ep 04 of course and hope it'll reignite the season, but I think I have lost faith in the ability of the writers to give proper resolution to all arc's and to GOT itself. I hope i'm wrong but a Hollywood style ending seems to be looming.

No surprise considering they cut down the length of the seasons... But really, the show never stood a chance of ending well considering it ran out of source material. Thats what the books are for when they eventually come out; to do the story justice.

If Bran stark turns evil through some magical way or another, that could salvage the storyline for me. Then the winterfell events would be one big trick played by The Great Other.
Doubt if that will happen though. The world of is essentially safe, as far as we can see for now.

That is an excellent analysis and makes sense of the things I thought were wrong but didn't have enough knowledge to explain why. I'm no military strategist, but even I thought I could have done better. The plan he outlines should have been thought up by Tyrion rather than hiding in the crypt and the civilians should have been building the earthworks.

yeah, last major battles were better. Now the show element of it all was too clear.
