DISCUSSION -- JULY 2019 300-word Writing Challenge (#34)

By the way, I'm not sure if there is a post specifically for introductions. But I'll jump in.
This story has been my first attempt to force myself to write something as opposed to world building ideas to exhaustion.

I'm Spanish, so since this isn't my 1st language, you are 100% welcome to correct me anytime.

Pleased to meet you all!!! :)

Greetings, JBGood! It's a very fine story, well done! Welcome to the site, and the Challenges, CC

@Ian Fortytwo
I like your mention of collieries reopening.
That's what is proposed about half a mile where I live - at the Woodhouse mentioned. The pit shown in this BBC article is where I served my apprenticeship and then a few years on the coalface (a real coalface, not some office slang!)

Culhwch: The author looks at a currently popular genre of fiction from an entirely new angle in this exciting story. By making extraordinary persons seem real, the cosmic implications of their situation becomes stronger by contrast.

JBGood: A fine sense of nostalgia is created in this winsome tale of youth on the cusp of developing into adulthood. By presenting a group of characters with all their minor foibles and small moments of bravery, the story contains a great deal of verisimilitude.

Calliopenjo: By adopting the standard tropes of far future, interstellar science fiction, the author is able to cast a jaundiced eye at the failings of our own time. Through an imaginary viewpoint, we come to see the many ways in which our own creations get in our way.

Dan Jones: This wild comic romp manages to stuff as many jokes, whims, and plays on words as possible into a short space, generously providing far more amusement than a much longer work. The wink-wink-nudge-nudge playfulness of the author draws the reader in as a partner in the game.

Phew! I finally got something on the page. I honestly thought I was going to have to pass on this one. Now just to edit.

elvet: The calm, elegant, reserved tone of this story's narrator creates the proper distancing effect needed to appreciate the objective view it offers of humanity. Through the eyes of another, we learn what we really are, and gain insight into how we view others.

scarpelius: The sense of impending doom that fills this apocalyptic tale movingly portrays the narrator's resignation to an unavoidable fate. The very fact that the protagonist records final thoughts on the nearing end reveals the human capacity to overcome despair.

Peter V: With the matter-of-fact tone of a reliable eyewitness, the author relates an extraordinary occurrence of mythic proportions. Through the device of the tale being narrated as if it happened long ago, the fantastic acquires the realism of history.

Perpetual Man: With clear insight into the human heart, the author creates a moving portrait of a mute inglorious Milton. Through this profound character study we learn that words are not always necessary to express inner appreciation of beauty.

johnnyjet: The unique premise of this imaginative tale captures the reader's sense of wonder from the start, and keeps it engaged until the very end. By adding an inconclusive final scene, the author ensures that our minds will remain enthralled.

Parson: By structuring this vision of legendary past and imagined future in the form of a narrative within a narrative, the author allows to see how we transform our experiences and dreams into story. A sense of the unvarying process of mythologizing comes to live in a way to which readers can all relate.

Thank you for your insightful review Victoria. Eloquently worded as always.

Garfunkel: The use of brief sections of narration and simple language draws the reader into the world of a child with deceptive ease and grace. By using this technique, the author greatly increases the impact of the unexpected denouement.

The time has come. After 4+ years my challenge streak is coming to an end:cry:

I left it too long before pondering the image. Now, I have a vague idea to run with, and could write it well enough before close, but I don’t have a single spare minute between now and then:cautious:

So, onto the voting (which I will make time for somewhere) and next month’s 75!

The muse didn't really visit me, she just sort of popped her head around the door, said "Hi" and then flew off.

Still, it gave me a chance to try out my random word generator. ;)

I am very sorry to hear this, as you are definitely one of the more talented writers around here.

As I write this, there is slightly less than a full day to go before the deadline. If at all possible, I would request that you sit down and write something, even if it is only stream of consciousness inspired by the image, so we can enjoy your vision.

M. Robert Gibson: With the generosity of a born storyteller, the author offers us a richly developed fantasy world, full of wonders and adventures. As a way of paying tribute to the power of fiction, the self-reflecting ending provides food for thought, as well as amusement.
