500 Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror Books You Should Read Before You Die - Members' Version

306. Starlight by Alfred Bester
307. The Best of Eric Frank Russell

Another option is another thread: The 500 Short Sf/f/h Stories We Recommend.

Is Starlight a ss collection?

It is. An SFBC compilation of two volumes, The Light Fantastic and Star Light, Star Bright, the complete short fiction (I think) of Alfred Bester, all issued in 1976 and probably not that easy to get hold of now.

Thanks. I have the 2 individual collections you mention, and they are superb.

Your proposal is taken up here, Randy:

How about keeping lists to a more manageable 100? :)

Right. Five hundred is too many genre books to specify that people owe it to themselves to try. Even 500 short stories is kind of a lot....

When we reach 500 books, it would be good to use the list as the basis for voting on a realistic select list of 100 books.

In fact, I'm tempted to set up new threads for the chrons members top 100 SF and top 100 fantasy novels. :)
@Brian G Turner, thinking about this, some books don't work as a single volume you need the whole series to understand it, others like Gormeghast, Magician etc work well as standalones.

We could have, separate threads,
100 Sci-fi.
100 standalone fantasy.
100 top series.

This is going to get very confusing unless it can be pulled together as a list that can be easily checked without going through pages of posts.

Re: a searchable list
As pointed out to me by @tegeus-Cromis it is possible to do a thread-only search
- Click on the Search link
- Change the option after the search box from Everywhere to This thread

Let's stick with this 500 book list first, please? Then you all can refine it/cut it down as you wish. But this seems to me a highly worthwhile effort. 100-book lists *never* include all the books I think should be included.

308 The Dragon Never Sleeps by Glen Cook
309 Between the Strokes of Midnight Charles Sheffield
310 Jack Faust by Michael Swanswick
311. Stinger by Robert McCammon
312 The Galactic Gourmet James White
313 The Space Merchants by. Frederick Pohl and C M Kornbluth
314. Burn't Offerings by Robert Marasco
315 Brightness Falls From the Air James Tiptree Jr
316 The Black Company by Glen Cook
317. Silverlock by John Myers Myers.
