DISCUSSION THREAD -- August 2020 -- 75 Word Writing Challenge

@Daysman .... Timing is everything .... Daysman reminds me of Marshall McLuhan's famous insight: "The Medium is the Message."

Now I've got nothing for this challenge. Just can't get my head round the concept. I suppose it's difficult to "imagine"things you've lived through.

However, I've just scanned some of the entries and was pleasently surprised about the quality and "on topicness" of the stories.

So on another note - Likes spotted in actual thread.

@-K2- ..... Necessary Madness ..... The wisdom of the old points to the blindness of youth.

------------

I need to turn the steam up on my muse. Nothing is percolating.

Does the proverb need to be explicitly stated, or is implied/ understood okay?

I recognise some proverbs in the existing entries but others I don't, although I could guess at which part the proverb is. I've heard of steampunk and do like the visual style, but have never read anything.

Also, I kind of made up a word, which is really two words combined. Not to get more words in but because it makes sense for my story. I'm not sure if that would be acceptable so I cut two words out elsewhere just in case.

There is no hard or fast rule and it depends on the readers interpretation. Sometimes with these themes the obvious is the better but subtle can also be fun. Also, in my opinion, it does not have have to be an established proverb. You can come up with your own.

There's no right and wrong when it comes to how the proverb is there, but if it's only implicit there is a risk that other members won't see it so when they come to vote they might mark it down as a result, thinking it doesn't meet the theme. The more well-known the proverb, the less the risk, but it's still there.

As for a made up word, sometimes they're accepted as one, sometimes we'll decide they're really two words -- it depends on how they're formed and what the context is. If you want a word check before posting, PM me or another mod and we'll look at it for you.

Thanks Luiglin! Yep that's the way I went, kind of in there but not word for word. Cutting it down from nearly 200 words was harder than I thought. Had to get rid of more than I would have liked.

EDIT: oh thank you also The Judge. Yep I understand makes sense. As for the two words, I may PM then you to check, not that I'll be upset if it's not :)

I made up some weird names on the spot, entirely coincidental but I'm not sure what would happen if they were the name of a real person. Maybe I should try one of those random name generators next time.
I only said to Girkunaftettu yesterday that of all the competitions I enter, the 75 is the best. He agreed and added that Tpag Nine of the Umpteenth Dimension stated only tomorrow the very same smell ;)

Edit: To me, making up weird names and situations is half the fun. Thriller and romance writers have to stick to common names... ok, scratch that. They should stick to common names but instead come up with Dirk Pitt, Hannibal Lecter, Fitzwilliam Darcy or Lady Macbeth. I mean, who names their main female lead after the Scottish Play. That's just asking for bad luck.
