Just started Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia. Interesting premise of a formerly wealthy English family with the requisite enormous broken down, isolated house with the twist they live in Mexico. About a year earlier the heir-to-be married a young Mexican woman from good (read, wealthy) family. When her family learns she's ill (through a disjointed and concerning letter she sends) her cousin is dispatched as family envoy to be sure she's all right. Taking place in the 1950s, this also looks to encompass the role of women at the time. The prose is good so far, so I'm looking forward to digging in.

I'm now starting a reread of Number9Dream by David Mitchell (another literary writer who would have done better to steer clear of fantasy, in my opinion). From my memory of it after almost two decades, it's my favourite of his books. We'll see how it stands up, but promising so far.

Update: it's brilliant.

For me, it's like a David Mitchell cover of a Haruki Murakami song, which I think is why I like it more than anything else he's done (I'm not a huge fan).

Yes, I've heard that, and can well believe it (the Beatles references in the two authors' titles surely can't be coincidence). I didn't get on with the only Murakami I tried, though, so this is one of those cases where I prefer the cover to the original.

Finished A Memory Called Empire last night. Very good, will definitely check out the next book whenever it arrives. First SF I've ever read in which poetry slams featured prominently. ;)

Also took a break in the middle to read a few short stories: "The Colour Out of Space," "An Inhabitant of Carcosa," and "Nethescurial," because I've got an idea for a cosmic horror/Lovecraft-ish SF story and reading is good research. In that vein, next up is Peter Watt's Blindsight.

Being pedantic, #9 Dream is a John Lennon song, post-Beatles.

Finished The Secret Child (A DI Amy Winter Thriller, Book 2) by Caroline Mitchell. It is a solid follow up to the first in series. I liked it a lot. But I will repeat my growing discontent with a formula in these "thriller" -- I'd call it a police procedural. -- books. The formula goes this way. A young to middle aged female has had an awful or a partly awful (in the case of Amy Winter) childhood. She is tormented by this horrific background but partly because of it and partly in spite of it she is able to just manage life while being a cracker jack detective. ---- Maybe it's just me, but I long for main characters who have a recognizably normal background and life, while being really good at detective work (or fill in the blank for another sort of book). Severely broken people very rarely succeed at anything, let alone succeed brilliantly. It just is not that believable. And for me not all that interesting either.

Half (59%) through Foregone Conflict (Across Horizons Book 2) by Stan C. Smith. I might not finish it. It is a time travel book with a really good idea and set up, but in my opinion the writing is a bit wooden and the interpersonal relationships strain credulity. I really like one of the main characters, a neanderthal female, named Skyra. I'm struggling with that being enough to keep reading. I read book 1 of series a few weeks ago and said I "might" read book 2 and the more I read of book 2 the more clear it is why it was only a "might."

(my bold)

That one is creepy good. I've been meaning to get to the sequel since everything I've read by him is good, but this, that, and the other seem to always distract me. Too many good choices already with more coming every day.

A.E. van Vogt "Destination: Universe!"
Collection of ten short stories. Good solid Golden Age stuff, and uniquely van Vogtian. Enjoyable reads and re-reads.
Purchased following comments by @Peter V and @Danny McG in Booksearch.

When I clicked on the notification, it said I was mentioned in the September reading thread. Just for a moment I thought someone was reading my book

I’d put off reading Iain M. Banks novels since he announced his cancer battle. I’ve decided to finish off the Culture books and have started Surface Detail

You are in for a treat Rodders. When he announced his illness I stopped and started right from the beginning all over. His are some of the best books ever.

Well, I sucked it up and finished Foregone Conflict (Across Horizons Book 2) by Stan C. Smith. In the end it was much like the first, interesting set up, one interesting character, and wooden writing. The books ending was nothing more than a tease for book 3. I'll be really surprised if I don't give that one a total pass.

Started Out of the Silent Planet by C.S. Lewis. It's a really old book for me and I don't know if I can get past the extremely dated S.F. side of things. -- So far it feels like an educated Buck Rogers novel, which is not a mark in it's favor. -- But I have read some of Lewis' Christian writings and thought that they were brilliant so I'm going to really try to give this a go. (Sidelight: I attended a Christian College and bought the book in 1968, and it was stolen from my dorm room. )

13 days since my last update and another 23 titles finished. 357 books read so far this year, 48 left to reach my goal, now on pace for ~508.

Since Aug. 31st:
“Three Mages and a Margarita,” book 1 of the Guild Codex: Spellbound series by Annette Marie.
“Dark Arts and a Daiquiri,” book 2 of the Guild Codex: Spellbound series by Annette Marie.
“Two Witches and a Whiskey,” book 3 of the Guild Codex: Spellbound series by Annette Marie.
“Demon Magic and a Martini,” book 4 of the Guild Codex: Spellbound series by Annette Marie.
“The Alchemist and an Amaretto,” book 5 of the Guild Codex: Spellbound series by Annette Marie.
These are not literary masterpieces by any stretch of the imagination, but if you're looking for a ton of fun, you can't do a whole lot better than these urban fantasies. The first 4 are re-reads, books 5-7 (6 and 7 are on-deck) are new reads. Yes, even I sometimes fall behind on my favorite series. :)

“The Eye of Minds,” book 1 of The Mortality Doctrine by James Dashner.
I was hesitant to start this series because his "Maze Runner" books are, in hindsight, quite bad. It's painfully obvious that not only did Mr. Dashner have no idea how viruses work, but how science in general works, and no interest in researching either. Seems to be a rather huge failing for a sci-fi author. I was pleasantly surprised with the first book of this series. He's using established tropes to drive a rather interesting story line. We'll see how the others go.

“The World is Full of Monsters" by Jeff VanderMeer.
This is my first foray in the world of Jeff VanderMeer. Named "the Weird Thoreau" by the New Yorker, I can't say that I disagree after reading this. I can say that more of his work lies in my future.

“Forever Free,” book 3 of the Forever War series by Joe Haldeman.
The finale of the Forever War series, while not the atrocity some have claimed, certainly fails to live up to the promise of the series. At least Haldeman, unlike so many authors in recent years, closed the door on this universe quite soundly.

“The Racketeer” by John Grisham.
Solid Grisham. Not his best, nor his worst.

“Moon Called,” book 1 of the Mercedes Thompson series by Patricia Briggs.
“Blood Bound,” book 2 of the Mercedes Thompson series by Patricia Briggs.
“Iron Kissed,” book 3 of the Mercedes Thompson series by Patricia Briggs.
“Bone Crossed,” book 4 of the Mercedes Thompson series by Patricia Briggs.
“Silver Borne,” book 5 of the Mercedes Thompson series by Patricia Briggs.
“River Marked,” book 6 of the Mercedes Thompson series by Patricia Briggs.
“Frost Burned,” book 7 of the Mercedes Thompson series by Patricia Briggs.
“Night Broken,” book 8 of the Mercedes Thompson series by Patricia Briggs.
“Fire Touched,” book 9 of the Mercedes Thompson series by Patricia Briggs.
“Silence Fallen,” book 10 of the Mercedes Thompson series by Patricia Briggs.
“Storm Cursed,” book 11 of the Mercedes Thompson series by Patricia Briggs.
“Smoke Bitten,” book 12 of the Mercedes Thompson series by Patricia Briggs.
One of my favorite authors and one of my favorite series. Mercedes "Mercy" Thompson is a Native American skin-walker, not a were-creature, with the ability to change into coyote form. She was adopted into a Montana werewolf pack and is currently the next door neighbor of the Alpha werewolf of the tri-cities (Washington State) pack.

“The Grimrose Path,” book 2 of the Trixter series by Rob Thurman.
This book was both great fun and a horrible disappointment. Ms. Thurman created a fantastic base for a long urban fantasy series, but never built upon it. Frustrating, because I did so want to hear more about our demon hunting trixter.

“Harrow the Ninth,” book 2 of The Locked Tomb series by Tamsyn Muir.
I will have to give this book a second reading in the not too distant future. I know I didn't get everything from it that it had to offer. Every bit as good as the first one.

I don't think I'll set a hugely ambitious goal again in the next couple years. While this has been fun, and I will continue to read at what many continue to view as an insane pace, I will probably return to my normal 200-300 titles/year. Still, despite falling behind on some favorite television series and missing some gaming time, it's been a fun ride, and I'm sure I will, sooner or later, decide to try to top the previous record again. :D
