Units of Measurement

A while ago I was strolling through town with my wife, she suddenly stopped and pointed,
"Aw, look at the cute little twins, two of them"

This left me wondering if she'd saw one at some point and thought "that kid looks like a twin going solo for the day"
All I've got to say is "You're a brave man, a very brave men."

You should have asked, "How do you know that they are not 67% of triplets?"

Actually heard on the daily, local newscast, tonight, describing a non-threatening, approaching asteroid: "No taller than a giraffe; nor wide as a city bus."

I rather of admire that one, in some twisted fashion.
Shakespeare will hunt them down.
Then they will say, "Is that a homicidal ghost with a dagger I see before me."

"Blue whale-sized 110ft asteroid heading towards Earth at a speed of 30,381 km/h, NASA warns." - Times of India, Aug 19, 2024

(It missed, in case anyone was wondering - actually outside the Moon's orbit...)

If the moon spins round the earth in more or less the plane of the ecliptic (*), couldn't it miss the earth by passing 2ft 6 above the North Pole, but still be outside the moon's orbit?

* Does it?

Good question - I always thought that it meant a sphere with a circumference of the Moon's orbit. Another damn thing to worry about...

I'm sure it does, Py.
I wasn't totally serious.
And I'm sure anything missing the pole by 2ft6 would have to be travelling at a terrific rate to break free of the gravity well again.
11.2km per second is escape velocity. 33times the speed of sound.
It would make one hell of a sonic boom and probably crack the polar ice cap into a million little pieces.

While I've been away I saw an asteroid described as "Stadium" sized.

It didn't say how many Taylor Swifts, Deer or Giraffes that was. It does tell you that it is very big, but I'm not liking "Stadium" as a measurement because it is so inaccurate. What kind of sports? And even within the same sport, let's say Football (Soccer), is this Bromley Football Club or Futbol Club Barcelona?

Dave,
I'm guessing that if that asteroid landed on your house it wouldn't matter much which stadium.

Would you prefer 100m across? Or 230 Taylor Swifts laying head to foot?
Or for volume 100 million Taylor Swifts (get it, since she is so thin).
