Discussion Thread -- APRIL 2022 75 Word Writing Challenge

Seconded. A WWII story about D-Day landings would be horrific but historical... unless we had weird science, then it'd be speculative.
If we had weird science in Normandy I'm not sure if that would be sci fi or horror....It would definitely be dark.

Take a look at the film Overlord or the game Return to Castle Wolfenstein or the RPG Achtung Cthulhu for WWII weird science/horror mashup. For a fantasy version, there was a very good comic series by Kurt Busiek and Carlos Pacheco called Arrowsmith (OK, set in WWI but still a great tale).

Luiglin suspects @Bowler1 has a new farm implement shop specialising in pitchforks - Pitch in to get your pitchin' pitchfork at Bowler1's today while stocks last (no kittens were harmed in the making of this advert).
No fluffy anything of any sort was hurt in the marketing of my very useful farm tools, that honestly have multiple uses.

Parson suspects @Bowler1 has a ray gun up his sleeve.
How does Parson know of my emergency back up, and what else is Parson keeping secret???
Bowler1 ponders a question that may occupy him for some time - would it be a sin to pitchfork a man of god???

Vote time - Yay.

@Christine Wheelwright- Love the throw back reference and the nonhuman POV.

Cc, I think magpie was referring to the extra story that I posted in the discussion thread. Not my challenge entry.

Sci Fi WWII pulp is my jam. I'm currently working on a Call of Cthulhu game involving a renegade Thule cult dedicated to unearthing the mythos and using forbidden knowledge to force human evolution.

Really liked:

Feeling the PRESSURE by @Bowler1 . Thought it was a nice clear snapshot from a portal drama.

Peace Talks by @Peter V . Because there's always something obvious to forget.

Fire number 2 by @Danny McG . Because ya can't beat a good toilet gag.

Voted for:

In Deep by @Jonnyjet . For the last three sentences -a story in themselves.

Thanks all for all the stories (y)

Time to vote. Let's see how my evaluator is working this afternoon.

Shortlisted Because

The Squeeze by @Astro Pen because it made me feel the pressure the main character was under.

The Death of the Blue Falcon by @sule because the ending was so perfect and so unexpected, and because when I read it again I saw how the ending fit the story perfectly.

Single Point of Failure by @Bren G because it was so logical from an alien point of view and it made me wonder whatever happened to Big Blue.

George Snuffelbuff and the Gomblecast by @AnRoinnUltra because it has such a human response to pressure.

Oh, the pressure is getting to me. How can I relieve such intense pressure? I don't want to go down @Danny McG path so I'll vote!!

Runner-up Single Point Failure by @Bren G

Voted for The Death of the Blue Falcon by @sule

A ridiculous amount of good entries this month. So many, in fact, that I couldn't in all consciousness neglect making a longlist; too much honorable mentioning to be done.

Longlist
Shortlist
  • @Ashleyne - I just loved the hip-hop vibe to this.
  • @AnRoinnUltra - So, so true of so many people, I'm sure!
  • @M. Robert Gibson - I was feeling the pressure just reading it! Loved the punch of the ending. Honestly, it was almost a toss up between yours and...

Vote
  • @sule - I loved everything about this. It's a pressure a lot of us can relate to, I think (although not the part about the publisher, in my case!!!)
