Discussion Thread -- May 2022 75 Word Writing Challenge

On a personal note, I want to say I have retired from the Improving our stories threads, and want to apologize for the terrible critiques I've done in the last 5-6 months. Stress can really build, and it manifested in those unfortunate posts. But of course everyone feels the stress of the last few years, and that's not a great excuse... more of an explanation.
I think your critiques have been as thoughtful as ever. I suspect social media fatigue may be playing a part in your feelings: by this I mean that sense of guilt/self-exposure/vulnerability I can get from expressing something of myself in forums at times when I'm already feeling stretched.

Well done @therapist

And that's about the closest I've ever come to winning a 75. Joint second with 4 others

As usual, huge thanks for the totally unexpected votes from @paranoid marvin @BT Jones @Bren G
And slightly smaller, but still big, thanks for all the mentions
And even more thanks for all the reviews @Victoria Silverwolf @Parson

I'll explain after the voting, on the off chance anyone cares. ;)
Now, for those of you not familiar with the joys of computer programming, an infinite loop is a loop whose exit condition is never satisfied, or does not have an exit condition, thus executing indefinitely.

The code used in the entry is Beginners' All-purpose Symbolic Instruction Code, otherwise known as BASIC, hence the punch-line
"Hmmm," mused Murgatroyd, "don't you think it's a bit... basic?"

I also wanted to use the code syntax highlighting feature of the forum, but there isn't an option for BASIC :(
Here it is another language
C#:
10 BIRTH
20 LIFE
30 DEATH
40 GOTO 10

Wait, I actually won? I did not expect this. My first ever victory!

But the real winner was whoever wrote the script for that 5 way tie ending. With Ursa's final vote, she could've forced the 5 way tie breaker, played king maker, or voted for someone on 2 votes, forcing a 6 way tie and—thanks to her self imposed ruling on 6 way ties—taken the victory for herself!

Thanks to @THX1138 @SRDFrench @Elckerlyc @Ursa major for your votes. And to all who mentioned me. You've made my day.

With Ursa's final vote, she

Just to mention that this "she" is actually a "he".

Being a pedant, and also somewhat anal, I couldn't call myself Ursus major as there is no such constellation (as far as I knew/know)... not to mention that, as someone interested in US railroads (and model railroads), I found it pleasing that Ursa is also an anagram of USRA** (the United States Railroad Administration).

There is also a male Ursa Major in the Marvel universe (both comic and cinematic), but I was unaware of this when I chose my username.

** - USRA was and is a gift for the manufacturers of model US steam locomotives (and those of their customers who don't want to have to choose between paying a lot more money or buying unrealistic toy-like models). USRA designed a set of "standard" steam locomotives that were used by many the numerous private railroad companies (either as designed or adapted from the USRA designs). This meant that those manufacturers could sell models of real-world locomotives and so could be used (either straight out of the box or with minor modifications) on model railroads based either on many of the real ones, or imaginary railroads whose builders/owners wanted them to look as "authentic" as possible. (Oh, and did I mention that I was a bit anal....)

Argh. My apologies. I was deliberating what pronoun to use. Even searched through the history to try and find someone else mentioning it. Then took a swing and a miss. (Ursa sounding like a feminine name did sway my guess).

Congratulations therapist! It's a great feeling winning the Challenge for the first time isn't it? I look forward to the theme and genre you choose for June's Challenge.

Thanks to Christine for setting a Challenge that led to a wealth of great stories, and to Parson and Victoria for their considered and welcome reviews.

If you're both a pedant and anal, would that make you a pedal?

Congrats @therapist on your wonderful story!

And thanks to everyone here for such a fun ride. Seems fitting that a challenge based around the theme “Infinity” should have so many possible outcomes right up until the last moment. Here’s to @Ursa major for the unenviable job of collapsing the wave function. ;)

Let’s do it all over again in a month!

Congratulations Therapist and more so on such a close run month, which should make the victory taste even sweeter.

And speaking of sweets, does anyone want cake as Bowler1 points to a mound of freshly baked cake (looking more like coal, and probably tasting like coal too). All baked by me for everyone to eat, so don't be shy, get stuck in.

You may wish to reconsider this. Your cake looks like it will either costs you votes or costs us Chrons several fellow members.
