DISCUSSION THREAD -- July 2022 -- 300 Word Writing Challenge #46

@Victoria Silverwolf & @Parson thanks tremendously for the reviews. Plus @THX1138 for the wonderful mention.

Gosh. I read half of the tales and was left speechless. Wonderful stories that very from the dramatically sad, to cosmically unique and a few that are down-right funny.

I have chosen five runners-up so far. Hopefully I can finish reading the rest tomorrow.

Ursa major: This cleverly constructed science fiction story makes use of multiple facts from science to create a surprising but logical resolution. A touch of irony is found in a reminder that often our best efforts are wasted.

Swank: In a few words, the author paints a vivid picture of a future far different from our present. Using the time-honored technique of having the characters take their extraordinary world for granted, this highly advanced society seems as real as our own.

You are excellent. Thank you for the summary and kindly vote!

Still twilight ...almost dark, so three votes cast before sundown:

A Kind of Immortality by @BT Jones -Near perfect, if not perfect science fiction by my reckoning: A hopeful future. Space exploration. Strange new worlds. Some time bending. New lifeforms. And a bit of melancholy. Because that's part of life too.

Assisted Suicide by @Phyrebrat -The story was bleak (typical of the author's work I think), but it was extremely well written. Great sinister final line 'That one's reserved, he says with his eyes...' Thar be serious writing skills afoot.

The lights shone by @Luiglin A writer giving a night class I took said it's worth trying to create a universal character for a story. I could see the old codger nursing the drink in my mind's eye, I think I know that character. The story flowed from that.

Almost voted for:

Agent Sasha Silverfox in The Dog Who Loved Me by @Starbeast 'Incapacitated with procrastination' ...good fun, and almost on the leaderboard.

The Explorer's Obsession by @mosaix A species hardwired to self destruct.

Appletop by @Rafellin Some serious wordbuilding for 300 words.

Not an easy choice this time round. Well done @Laura R Hepworth , and to the always consistent reviewers. Thanks all for all the stories. (y)

Wasn't able to get anything written myself (too much other writing that I have to get done), but I enjoyed reading everyone's entries!

My votes went to:

Diplomatic Failings by @Christine Wheelwright
<Untitled> by @leorising
What Goes Around by @paranoid marvin

Honourable mentions:

Space Walk by @Robert Zwilling
Daydream Believers by @Bren G
Agent Sasha Silverfox in The Dog Who Loved Me by @Starbeast

Votes
A Walk in the Woods - @Victoria Silverwolf
Chalky - @Cat's Cradle
Diplomatic Failings - @Christine Wheelwright

I could have had more Runners up, but in an effort to keep the list manageable, I'm afraid I do tend to 'penalise' bad punctuation or typos or spelling or missing words. Not that I'm any sort of expert, but I have fallen foul of losing potential votes because of such things, so now I always try to read my entry with my proof-reader hat on. It's amazing what mistakes can be made in the heat of creativity.

Anyway, thanks everyone who entered for keeping me entertained this afternoon.

Okay, time to do this. It is presently 11:13 am and I'm off to read the stories. But first I have to admire everyone who finished a story. I loved this picture but like I said up-thread it produced a labyrinth in my mind. Each path I went down seemed blocked without a real story.

Shortlisted because

Appletop by @Rafellin --- because the story grows on me the more I read it.

(Slightly dizzy after spending the last 15 minutes in the land of magic mushrooms)

Something new by @VRlass --- because the story is so filled with love and pathos.

Diplomatic Failings by @Christine Wheelwright --- because it so succinctly captures the central human failing.

(Sometimes when typing in this onboard word processor I can't un-bold something and I fight so long to get it right I could just about as well copy and paste from Word. 45 minutes into the process.)

Lord, what fools these mortals be by @Ian Fortytwo ---- because as in so much of life human hubris is too much to fight against.

In my heart and my roots by @Jo Zebedee ---- because it's a sweet story of two sides of true love which support the significant others in their life.

Votes sent in for

Something New,
Diplomatic Failings,
In my heart and my roots.

(Mission accomplished 1 hour and 15 min.)

This is Agent Sasha & Sniffy's second tale. The first was a 75 word story titled, Cakefall.
