A.I. (general thread for any AI-related topics)

I suspect the majority of that will be losing the vast numbers of contracting engineers involved in installing fibre all over the country rather than being displaced by AI technology.

Meta is offering its AI tech as an open source software, a move that rivals perceives as dangerous

Is this old material already outdated or will it be updated by Meta and anyone else using it in open source fashion. Even if google and other closed source companies keep their secrets under wraps, this does mean that there will be zero regulation at the source of AI from now on. First there was fake book, now there is fake world.

Could this be a trend where all software becomes open source, and the only security obtainable will be from using only reputable company servers to do the work?

The problem isn't what AI will do on it's own, the problem is what people will do to other people using AI. That is what the recent warnings by the AI researchers is really about. They have come to realize that fake information properly channeled can derail anything, including their own well being. Planned or not, the warnings about AI computers destroying humanity act as a smoke screen to allow the fake aspects of the situation to be blown way out of proportion so that concerns about the real problems will also be considered to be unfounded. It is simply a way to make money and nothing else.

Somewhere or other, George Orwell defines weapons into those that help the people and those that don't: a bow and a musket are fairly easy to make and use, while a suit of armour or a tank aren't (incidentally, his views on gun ownership seem to vary wildly, largely depending on how close the German army was). AI feels very much like a weapon for powerful people to use, something that will allow tyrants to tighten their grip. We've already seen what weaponised lying can do to an election. I could easily see some powerful villain using AI to put out targeted election propaganda that would get his puppet into power somewhere.

Yes, but surely we have already reached levels of peak stupidity, peak misinformation, peak fake news. Could it really get any worse just because we now have AI?

In the US weaponizing lying to affect elections has been standard practice for centuries. Pamphlets and newspapers were the primary tools in the earliest days. In modern times cable news, internets news, social media, and "bots" have ramped up the dissemination.

AI may become another tool for the generation of lies, but it is still dependent on a delivery system. I'd imagine that the best in the propaganda field see AI a little differently than the rest of us. They are like top fashion designers looking at bulk production sweatshops. AI will imitate them very high volume. But the newest trends, the lies that take off and make a real difference, will continue come from the best propaganda designers.

Yes, that's what I was trying to say earlier (but you did a much better job).

Spin, propaganda and misinformation has always been significant in manipulating a population. Once AI gets stuck in - and generally does a bad job - it may not make things worse. Perhaps it will help us become even more aware of these manipulative methods. Of course, folks have a tendency to identify the opposition's propaganda while accepting that produced by their own side.
