DISCUSSION THREAD -- July 2024 -- 75 Word Writing Challenge

Umm.... nope. Don't get it
A pike is a fish. Pike, however, is the youngest member of the Walmington-on-Sea squad of the Home Guard in a very popular British TV series from the last century, set in World War Two. People are probably riffing on one of the most popular episodes, in which the keen-but-hapless squad actually manages to capture some German submariners who have been spying. The captain of the sub wants to write down (in his notebook) the names of everyone in the squad, so that they can suffer a gruesome fate when the Germans win the war. His catchphrase is, "Your name will also go in the book!" The squaddies, though initially bullish, are keen not to give him that information, just in case the Germans DO win the war. Pike sings a rather childish but insulting song about Hitler (I think), and the captain demands to know his name - so Captain Mainwaring (pronounced Mannering) shouts out, "Don't tell him, Pike!"

Hilarity ensues. :)

Very good summary!

@BigJ .... Divorce in the 23rd Century .... This is a story which has locked onto a timeless truth.

@Parson - Sweet, with dashes of arrogance and innocence. I almost went to help Joseph.

@Hugh - Unexpected, with a provocative ending. The first time I read it, I didn't quite understand the context, but then I did and I liked it.

@Starbeast - Very funny. There are situations in our lives that are just like that.

@Bren G - Immediately after reading, I envisioned a mother bird pushing her chick to teach it to fly. Great.

@BigJ - I liked the comparison, and it's quite real, in a fictional world (or not).

@otaylor - Unfortunately, that's the way the world is, everything revolves around money. I hope this fiction remains fiction.
