Book Hauls!

Hey Hey! I've just done a littlemiss and found whilst doing some local shopping the following 2 books that were in a pile of books going for a bargain as part of a local bookshops clearance sale.

What's more amazing is that I was asking after this author and thier short stories here just yesterday, must be fate. Spooky...:D

Ancient Sorceries and Other Stories - By Algernon Blackwood
The Dance Of Death and Other Stories - By Algernon Blackwood

Happy Days are here again....:)

Had been on an official trip to Delhi, our capital city, and had a chance to visit a couple book stores on my last day there during which I picked up:

American Gods - Nail Gaiman
Kafka on the Shore - Haruki Murakami
Emperor of Dreams
(Fantasy Masterworks collection) - Clark Ashton Smith
A couple of story collections of H.P. Lovecraft
A John Banville compendium with Athena, Book of Evidence and Ghosts
The Lost World and Other Stories - Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (I already have it, this is for a friend who has just discovered the joys of reading :))

@JP:
I also saw a couple of Alan Moore comics there - V for Vendetta and Watchmen for ~800 rupees a piece, and League of Extraordinary Gentlemen at maybe some 600 per (slim) volume.

AU$15 for a copy of Wizardology :D it usually sell for, about $25.

Anyway, it looks great next to 'Dragonology' and my eldest Granddaughter managed to read through it before I could!!:D

The Thousandfold Thought by R. Scott Bakker

I'm guessing you'll find the resident Book Meister has an advanced copy but I'm sure he'll all tell us how he managed to get his hands on such a hot item LOL!...:(

My understandingiis that it has a shipping date in the U.S. of January 1, and a release date (as the norm) some 2 weeks later. I think your right about the U.K release. A bit off-topic I have to say that this one of the few occasions that I like the U.S. cover treatment better than the U.K.'s.

Getting this copy was more of a pain than normal, as (again to my understanding) the first batch of review copies had some print issues/errors that the author didn't want sent out on a wide basis for reviiew The few he did have been to people he trusted (not me:)) that would not hold it against him in the review process.

I started seeing more people state they had the copies and ultimately felt jealous enough to go directly to the source to beg.

Recently bought all of the Roman Mysteries that are in print to date - starting with The Thieves of Ostia, right through to The Fugitive from Corinth (10 Books). I chatted to the author, Caroline Lawrence, who quite aptly described them as Enid Blyton meets Gladiator! This is a good summation. They are a great set of books for the younger readers, but secretly I'm enjoying reading them to my 6 year old. :)

A word of warning. These books push the boundaries of blood and gore for young ones to the limits. I'm having to change some of the descriptions as I read for my little girl. The first book is all about someone who is going around Ostia chopping the heads off dogs!

Just visited R. Scott Bakker's webpage and read the prologue from his first book - one word: zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.
Oh, sorrry - dozed off...AGAIN!
IMO Bakker is trying too hard to impress his readers with complicated names and spellings and fancy fonts and mindless rhetoric, and for old hats like me, it's a wasted effort.

OH, I read the Borribles in my teens and recall that I quite liked the books at that time. Unfortunately I can't remember much of them these days. I will be interested to read your opinions of the books.

OK this book haul was from last month after I decided to use part of my $100 gift voucher from Borders Books I received from a client...:D

Viriconium - M John Harrison part of the Fantasy Masterwork series - Superb stuff.

The Hidden Stars - Madeline Howard, one of the forum's resident authors. I've only taken a peek but I like what I see so far.

The Locus Awards - 30 years of the best in SF and Fantasy in MMPB. Authors include Ted Chiang, Neil Gaiman, John Crowley, Gene Wolfe, Ursual K Le Guin, George RR Martin, James Tiptree Jr., Greg Egan, Johh Varley, Bruce Sterling, Octavia E. Butler, Lucius Sheppard and Connie Willis to name just a few. Read bits and pieces but plan to tackle these over the New Year.
