Book Hauls!

I also got "The Secret Life of Bees" by Sue Monk Kidd, just for a change of pace. Heard good things about it. Going to Barnes and Noble today, so I'll probably buy more stuff.

I've just been given The Secret Life of Bees as well as The Mermaid Chair by the same author and have not read them yet. They're in the to-read pile. Would very much like to know what you think about the book.

I will let you know, for sure. It's in my 'to read' pile as well. I am starting Terry Pratchett's Guards! Guards! today, because I finished Mieville's Perdido Street Station last night, and my stomach was twisted in knots... it is a very emotionally difficult book to read, and yet it is amazing. I need something lighter before I start into anything that will tug a my heartstrings again. But yes, I will read it and let you know!! Thanks!

Recently bought:
- 'Anansi boys' by Neil Gaiman
- 'Shadowmarch' by Tad Williams

Really, really want to buy (and read of course) 'a feast for crows' by George R. R. Martin, in Dutch ('cause I read part 1-3 in Dutch as well), finally the book is in the shops... however, apparently 6 chapters are missing. On a Dutch fantasy forum I heard it takes about 2 months for a reprint :( . Not happy about this!!

OK, my most recent book haul today from the bookshop conveniently placed 30 odd metres from my workplace is:

Veniss Underground - Jeff Vandermeer. I've perused the master's work before but this was going for a song and it also had a Veniss Novella Balzac's War which I don't recall reading before. Anyone checked it out? Brys, Jay?

The Poe Shadow - Matthew Pearl. I posted a thread on this but only now have the book in my clammy hands. A tale revolving around the enigma that is Edgar Allan Poe's death. Going on the recommendation on Nesacat and my own love of all things Poe I thought I'ld finally give this book a try.

I hope to get to both books by the first week of July.

My favourite pratchett book! Guards! guards! rules :)

Just got Terry Brooks wishsong of shannara for £2.50

Just received (via the mail) an old sf classic: Station X. Chris, did you ever read this one? Anybody else?

Just bought the Hastur Cycle, the Ithaqua Cycle and The Yellow Sign and other Tales. It's all j.d.'s fault this for telling me about the Chaosium Books website. I went in there just to have a look round and ended up buying books. Will have to wait on them though since it being sent by surface mail.

Well, Nesa, now I get to return the compliment: I just received my copy of The H. P. Lovecraft Dream Book, which I'd somehow managed to miss along the way. NOT cheap, but reasonable. Thanks for the recommendation.

Now, if I help you knock over a bank, are you willing to help me knock over Fort Knox? I'm afraid the jabberwock won't be enough here: we'll need the aid of the bandersnatch and the haffalumps as well.....

Very minor book haul - I've been wanting Mary Gentle's 1610 for a while, not in the library and $15 and up in most bookstores. Bought it today on ebay for $3.50. Made me feel good anyway.

:p Deal. You get the heffalumps *here are the peanuts* and I'll go get the bandersnatch since she's awfully good friends with the jabberwock. It's a lovely book, the Dream Book and wish you much joy in the reading. :)

Got Pratchett's Guards! Guards! and Adams' Watership Down (for a friend) very cheap :)

Is this for a "friend"? Or a friend? *grins* Sorry, I couldn't help it. Watership Down -- been a long time; but I recall it as being quite a nice book.

Picked up The Confusion and The System of the World by Neal Stephenson today, as well as The Half-Blood Prince by some chick called Rowling. 3-for-2 offer at Waterstones.

Well, Nesa, I'm catching up on you; you've picked up several suggestions I've made, now I seem to be returning the favor. I got my copy of Book of the Werewolf in the mail today. I'll let you know what I think of the story you mentioned later.

Got another couple of orders I placed a while back: one a replacement for an old favorite that's falling to pieces -- the old Beagle paperback edition of The Lurking Fear and Other Stories by H. P. Lovecraft. This was the edition in which I first discovered HPL, and for which I retain a sentimental fondness despite the textual errors. Second is a non-fiction bit by Robert H. Barlow: On Lovecraft and Life, including a journal he kept during one of HPL's visits to him in Florida. The last is called The Worms Remember, by Ann K. Schwader, and it's a book of dark/horror verse, largely Lovecraftian, but including some other themes as well. I've heard of her work, but not really seen much of it, but from glimpsing over it, I'd say there's some very nice stuff in here. I mean, just the opening of one of the pieces -- "Midnight on the Dark Angel Watch" -- quoted on the cover, is very evocative to me: "The brightest are those who have fallen farthest; / who wear the night like a benediction / twisted & bitter as absinthe kisses."

Yes please j.d. That book had quite a few odd stories in it and the one with the wolf that becomes a woman was very sad.

I've just bought Jasfer Fforde's Thursday Next books. It was a box set and very irresistible.
:)

Just picked up an omnibus edition of Gene Wolfe's Wizard Knight duology plus Books 1 and 2 of Neal Stephenson's Baroque Cycle, Quicksilver and The Confusion. I've heard mixed reviews about this trilogy from great to mediocre, so I thought I'd check it out in full myself.

Just bought The Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch, and will be coming in tomorrow. I'm a sucker for hype, and this book does really sound like it will be fun. ;)

Also bought: Paragaea by Chris Roberson, and Thackery T. Lambshead's Pocket Guide to Eccentric and Discredited Diseases. I haven't read any SF in a while so I thought I would get back into it with Roberson's book.

Oh, and I have a few books coming in from Ebay by an author named Alis Rasmussen(yes I know this is Kate Elliott), but I've forgotten the names right now.
