Book Hauls!

Yes, but who's riding a dragon? Me, that's who.

Ah, but I am a knight gentle and true, and therefore in no danger from thy wyvern! *roar and stream of flame*

*cough, cough, sputter* *quickly patting out small fires about person*

Hmmm. Methinks I'd best recalculate my strategy....

Down Mr. Flufflebumpkins! Down!

No! Bad dragon! No more fire!

Dat's a good Mr. Flufflebumpkins! Yes it is! Yes it is!
*pets dragon*

Please! No names with the word "bump" in them for the moment.... And, no, I'm NOT going to explain THAT one!!!

You have too many secrets! That's not healthy! You should share some with me in the interest of mental health.

Mr. Flufflebumpkins agrees.

Abso-bleedin'-lutely NOT!!!

By all the Elder Gods .... there's books hauls and reams of paper and they're playing with dragons and fire.

*Weaves through dragon "Good evening sir" and knight and flames 'very pretty indeed'*

Hmmm ... always start wondering when several people start waving a book. Have to admit that China Mieville is an interesting person and I am curious about his books and Perdido Street Station is a curious name. I might just read it at that.

But I think I'll start with Erikson first. Asked Rosie about that and have been told where to start. I love that cover with the hounds.

Ummm ... nothing to say I can't read them both. ;)

It might be a good idea to reserve some of the airy banter for the Lounge, and bring this particular thread back on topic.

Went to the book store today and now have the following Steven Erikson books:
Gardens of the Moon
Deadhouse Gates
Memories of Ice
House of Chains
Midnight Tides

Is the series going to end with The Crippled God?

And there's also China Mieville's Perdido Street Station, which I'd like to start on.

Are the Erikson books the kind that need to be read exclusively. Rosie did say she had some trouble at first with the variety of characters and their cultures and all. I tend to read several books by different authors at the same time but have read neither Erikson nor Mieville before. But after having read the threads on both, I'm now very curious.

Huh? *GOLLUM does a cartwheel of joy*...:D

You've picked up two of my favourtie authors there Nesacat.

Erikson's Malazan is my favourite SFF series ever. As far as I know Yes it ends at Book 10 The Crippled God but no doubt there could be additional stories written.

As far as complexities go, Gardens Of The Moon at the time I read it was pretty much the most complex storyline I'ld ever come across. Book 1 and 3 and 2 and 4 are linked but you really need to read them in order I feel. GOTM is good but things only get better with each book, amazing stuff! I think you could probably read GOTM with a couple of other books but not too many if you don't want to get too confused. You can certainly read the first five books with other books in between but it may not be a good idea to focus on anything too heavy or complex in the EPIC sense whilst simultaneously reading one of the Malazan books. Bonehunter (BK 6) is been out for a while now and Book 7 is due by Feb 2007. Then you only have another 3 left to go, so you've probvably picked up on the series at a handy time.

Mieville is also very good, so really either author will be worthwhile. Not sure though if I'ld want to read both PSS and GOTM simultaneously.

Let us know how you go...:)

Only one book for me lately (saving my pennies for a while): the new Chaosium anthology, Arkham Tales. Don't know how it'll be, but there are usually at least a few in these that are quite good, sometimes the entire book is very notable.... This one is a group of tales set throughout Arkham's history, so likely to avoid many of the pitfalls of the normal mythos fiction and concentrate on the eeriness of the town itself....

Picked up the first of Robin Hobb's "Far Seer" trilogy today. Time to see what all the fuss is about I guess.

Most recently I've bought:

Music to My Sorrow - Mercedes Lackey (already read)
Silver May Tarnish (Witch World) - Andre Norton & ????
The Duke's Ballad (Witch World) - Andre Norton & ???
The Firebrand - Maron Zimmer Bradley
The last two books of Anne McCaffrey's Pern series before Dragon's Fire plus the one written solely by her son.
Sword of Knowledge - C.J. Cherryh (Lackey & ????) -- I bought this one used and am still waiting for it to arrive. It's being very slow as I'd ordered it on the 15th.

I'm basically trying to fill out the books I'm missing in the series I've been collecting. I have the first 7 or 8 of Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time, but I don't really care about that one now as I'm not planning on reading it until he finishes the thing.

I wish the SFBC would get the most recent Harry Potter book already as I have the book club editions of the previous five and really would like the sixth in the same format.

Chaosium is exceedingly addictive especially when you go in with a love for Lovecraft anyway. They sent e-mail about having added Arkham Tales to their catalogue so I went to have a look. I bought:
Arkham Tales
Necromicon: The Wandering Of Alhazred
Tales Out Of Innsmouth
The Innsmouth Cycle

They are being sent by surface mail so will take a couple of months I think to actually get here.

Went to the City today, Sunday and one of the lcoal stores was having a sale: 40% discount off all books (incl. New Releases). Happily picked up:

System Of The World - Neal Stephenson (book 3 of the Baroque cycle).
The Dante Club - Matthew Pearl (author of the intriguing Poe Shadow)
Throne Of Jade - Naomi Novak (book 2 in the Temeraire series)

A pretty good triumvirate at almost half the RRP I think.

Went to MPH and discovered they were giving a 25% discount and so I bought books. I'll have to wait on Perdido Street Station and Malazan since it would appear that books do not drink coffee and the secretary from the HR Dept fed them a whole pot.:( They didn't have those but they've been ordered and will arrive in about three weeks.

I did buy some books:
The Complete Works of Oscar Wilde
Tanglewreck - Jeanette Winterson
I, Coriander - Sally Gardner
Scar - China Mieville
Looking For Jake & Other Stories - China Mieville (am going to start this later tonight)

Gollum: Tell me what you think of Dante Club please.

Had Friday off work and spent a nice day wandering around all the charity shops. Picked up

Lord of the Flies-William Golding
Farenheit 451 - Ray Bradbury
Junky - William Burroughs
In the Miso Soup - Ryu Murakami

for a total of £5 all very good condition too.

Then went to Waterstones where they have a 3for2 offer on at the moment and bought

American Gods - Neil Gaiman
Use of Weapons - Iain M Banks
The Scar - China Mieville

Just picked up for $3 (RRP $17) during my lunchbreak a mint copy of:

Centauri Device - SF Masterwork by M John Harrison....:D
