Book Hauls!

Nothing very rare in this lot but some that filled a few holes in my collection, some that have been on my "to be read (but first bought)" pile, and a few that have turned up on the Chrons "Book Recommendations" (aka Book Search) thread.

Sorry, the images size were too big to upload so they're in a pdf.

Most were just £1, some £2. All from the wonderful Porcupine Books (Porcupine Books Homepage) that I've mentioned before. Brian tells me he's winding down to retirement so I'm not sure how long this great source of books is going to last.

Now...what to read first??

Lovely aren't they? I have few others (mainly early Silverbergs) but when I considered collecting them a few years ago I realised it could be an expensive hobby as (a) they're very popular and (b) many are first editions of novel by famous authors. Quite a few of the books I also have in later printings, by different publishers, so I gave up on the idea. Still, worth getting if they can be found for 1 or 2 quid.

A two-book splurge on ebay last night, one from my ever shrinking wishlist and one mentioned on a site full of book lists that sounded interesting.

HARM - Brian Aldiss

The Labyrinth Key - Howard V Hendrix

Got this from bookmooch today. I've yet to read a James Bond book, could be interesting to see what I make of it when I get round to it. It came as a surprise to me that Fleming came into fiction quite late, and 11 years after this book was published he died after producing a dozen Bond books (plus Chitty Chitty Bang Bang!)

producing a dozen Bond books

Actually a dozen Bond novels and two collections. I've read 'em all (though it's been awhile) and liked them a lot. (I've even read one or two of the Gardners but those are not at all the same. Maybe not bad in the abstract, but just not Bond.) Casino Royale is very good. Moonraker's gotten blended up with the movie for me. The books are better than the movies (the movies are great, but in a different way) but I can't remember the specifics of that book.

Because it was mentioned on another thread, I picked up Remnant Population - Elizabeth Moon, along with Darkmans - Nicola Barker and Dying Inside - Robert Silverberg.

A nice trio of charity shop finds. Years ago I borrowed Crichton's Sphere from a library, read all the way through to discover the last page was missing! Not this time...

I went through my book collection, writing down titles and ISBN numbers so I could eventually update my Goodreads bookshelves. Was surprised how long the list was, and the number of books old enough to not have ISBN numbers. (Combined collection, me and my Baux, his old/rare books are probably worth more than mine.)

Scooped up the first four Pip/Flinx books by Alan Dean Foster:

The Tar-Aiym Krang
Bloodhype
Orphan Star

The End of the Matter

You may already know but in case you don't (I didn't) don't be disappointed by Bloodhype as it's not really a P&F book - they're thrown in at the end but it's mostly about other stuff and isn't essential to the story. Tar-Aiym, especially, is really good, though and the other two are central.

I have most of the Pip and Flinx books and they are quite enjoyable. But when I came to read Bloodhype I was left really disappointed. It is totally different to the others and is quite dreary.
Open the pod-bay doors...: Bloodhype by Alan Dean Foster

Also in case you're interested, For the Love of Mother-Not, written in the 80s is kind of a prequel to the series and is quite fun!
