I ordered a signed copy of Garth Merenghi's Terror Tome.

For those not familiar with it, Garth Mereghi is a fictional hack horror writer that originated from a spoof TV show called Garth Mereghi's Dark Place. It was hilarious and if you enjoy shows such as The Mighty Boosh and the IT Crowd, chances are that you'll enjoy this.

I'm waiting for my daughter to finish reading her copy so I can borrow it.

My purchases of the day:

The cookbook is to help me make the perfect cheesecake - as a result of having LOTS of milk in house (due to the kitchens I sometimes work in being closed for refurbishment and the fridges and freezers needing emptying) - I've had a big slow-cooker permanently brewing production line quantities of cream cheese for weeks now.

The H E Bates is another for my Pre-ISBN Penguin collection. I love finding these rebound paperbacks. I have a few like this. Someone thought this book was precious enough to go to the bother of rebinding it and that pleases me immensely.

The book by Erika Mann is a Dec. 1938 printing in excellent condition— but I am reading it, not stowing it away. The Folk-Stories painting allegedly shows Valkyries (!?). Can someone explain that to me? Translator is my late friend Benedikt Benedikz.

The cat is Kimble, not yet a year old. My how he’s grown.

In the latest big shipment of books ordered by my intellectual better half, this one was included for me.

As there are no words on the cover, I need to tell you that this is the omnibus Ambergris (2020) by Jeff VanderMeer, which collects the collection City of Saints and Madmen (2001)*, as well as the novels Shriek: An Afterword (2006) and Finch (2009).

*From what research I have been able to do (because I know nothing at all about these works), there are three different versions, at least, of this collection. One has four novellas, one adds an enormous "appendix," and another adds two stories to that. There are indications that the version in this omnibus may omit some of the "appendix" due to the size of the book.

EDITED TO ADD: One reviewer on Amazon states that the entire "appendix" has been removed; surgically, perhaps.

I just acquired some used Asimov hardbacks, some first edition, all in pretty good condition:

Predominantly short story collections, I hauled mostly Doubleday first editions:

The Early Asimov, Asimov's Mysteries, Nightfall and Other Stories, and The Bicentennial Man

Also Silverberg's expansion of The Positronic Man, a SF anthology, 13 Crimes of Science Fiction, edited with Greenberg & Waugh, which looks good, as well as some non-ficton, which were part of the bundle: The autobiography, I, Asimov, a collection of essays on SF, Asimov on Science Fiction, and two science books focused on astronomy, Extraterrestrial Civilizations, and The Collapsing Universe.

The Doubleday Early Asimov volume alone normally retails for more than I paid for all ten, so quite content, thank you very much. :)

He has a new one coming out and I think I read somewhere he's doing a tour to promote it. Might be fun !

It was. On the night we went to see him he over-ran (I noticed the on-stage light- dim raise dim raise - cues for him to wind up the second Q&A section long before he did. They were getting pretty OFF! ON! OFF! ON! by the time he got the hint). They had to cancel the signing session afterwards because it was so late.

Meanwhile, at JunkMonkey mansions, this landed on the doorstep the other day:

The first four copies of BD monthly, Pavillion Rouge from 2001 bound into one hefty volume. Pavillion Rouge only lasted 26 issues so I already have a sizeable chunk of the run.

Thanks Junk Monkey ! Just booked tickets for his 1st Nov show in the big city The Weej . Nice way to round of my Halloween festivities !

The Treasury of Science Fiction by Crown Publishers 1951 edition contains stories from well known and and lesser known writers .

Last night I finished a history book: Conquest: The English Kingdom of France by Juliet Barker. This is what happens in France after the English King Henry V dies and leaves an infant son (Henry VI, who also became disputed King of France shortly afterwards on the death of his maternal Grandfather French King Charles VI) and what is essentially a committee in charge of both England and his newly acquired French possessions (What could possibly go wrong  ). I hadn't realised quite how short Joan of Arcs military career was. A no frills, business like book. Could have used more maps. Timeline was included (which is useful).

Listened to an English translation of a Japanese novel (novella?): If Cats Disappeared from the World by Genki Kawamura. About death and life and what is important. Also features a deal with the Devil. A bit too saccharine, but it gave me something to listen to while messing around in the kitchen.

We went to a large Goodwill store and I got several hardcover SF books cheap. I suspect they're all SF Book Club editions.

Homecoming: Harmony (1994) by Orson Scott Card, which is actually the three novels The Memory of Earth (1992), The Call of Earth (1993), and The Ships of Earth (1994).

The Stars Are Also Fire (1994) by Poul Anderson.

Destiny's Road (1997) by Larry Niven

Pattern Recognition (2003) and Spook Country (2007) by William Gibson.

Adrian Tchaikovsky's Lords of Uncreation was downloaded last night.

I read Shards of Earth and found it to be a thoroughly enjoyable read, but wanted to leave the series until it was finished.

The Gibson books are terrific.

Went to a church potluck tonight. Against one wall was a table full of free books. Could easily have left with three or four but didn’t feel the right time or place to glory in gluttony so decided on this:

Published by The Library Of America.

Holy cow, that's a terrific find for free! That's an excellent collection. There's a second volume of later works as well.
$35 new when it came out. Looks unread but I think it was. Stories are lightly checked off in the TOC using the ABC grading system including pluses and minuses.
