I've read this too about removing sticky labels. Use hairdryer to soften the glue and peel it off gently. It won't work if it's a plain paper cover. If it's a "shiny" cover (i.e. is coated with something) then your chances of getting the label off is better. My mother used to use benzene to get labels off but this sometimes rubs off the colour of the cover if you use too much or get too enthusiastic.Maybe try softening the glue? Hairdryer?
The other option I read, was to put the book in the freezer so the glue gets brittle and then the label should fall off. I think this depends on the type of glue used on the label.
I'd love to know what sort of troglodyte would put something over the title of a novel!
