A friend lent me this book and I fell in love. It's about an aspiring wizard in England (sound familiar? Not quite) who find that, after surpassing his teacher, has the power to make his life better than the hole if disdain it had been since he was abandoned into his master's care.

Magic, history and witty sarcasm from djinni. Great.

I just finished Bartimeus and it definitely has an interesting voice in the shape of a djinn! I think you might enjoy it, even though Nathaniel isn't the most perfect of 'heroes'.

I finished the book I was in last night and picked up The Amulet of Samarkand... I only read the first chapter though before I went to bed (around 11pm... I get up at 4 for the baby). Anyways, it was funny! Bartimaeus sounds like my type of guy. I look forward to reading the rest of the story. Thanks for the recommendations. :D

Well, Alia, I found out today that my library has bought The Golem's Eye and I'm the first one on the list for it. Hopefully it will come in soon!

*As an aside, my library might be small but they sure know how to use their technology! On their website, not only can you access the books database, but they also list upcoming releases and other books not necessarily new but 'coming'. Then you can reserve them right there on the spot. You can see a list of what you have checked out, what is waiting for you...it is just great! Especially for people like me who can't get there to browse as often as I'd like. So I browse by computer. In addition to that, you can email them lists of books you think they ought to carry. I don't know how much stock they put in those emails but that it is there is a good thing.

Okay... cough over links, please. That's great Dwndrgn! A perfect job, in my eyes. I'd be curious on links for upcoming books about to be release. If it's possible to send me it. Do they have links for just YA books about to be released? Or is it just in general?

I see Ptolemy's Gate is out in hardback now. Has anyone here read it yet? I've not got around to reading book 2 yet, but I'd like some idea of whether I'm going to like the ending to this trilogy before I commit to another two books.

That's cheating! Do you read the last page first too?? :p I have not had the chance to read #3 yet but both the first and second books were engaging and entertaining (and they even taught us a little bit  ) so I doubt that the third book could be such a disapointment that you wouldn't want to read the first two. I'd say give-r-a-go...

The problem is that I have so little time to read. I enjoyed the first one, but not so much that I would rush out to buy the second when there are so many authors that I've not yet tried. I'm currently trying to read Cornelia Funke's 'Dragonrider', but I've been going 2 weeks and I'm only about half way through. It's hardly a challenging read, but I only manage to snatch 10 minutes here, and 5 minutes there.

I'd love to be able to read everything in sight - I used to do this when I was younger. Now I have to ration myself, (I try to read one book by each author and move on) but I also don't want to miss out on something if it's spectacular, if you know what I mean.

Quite understandable, I know you've got a lot on your plate. So, you need to limit your choices to those that are well worth stealing that five minutes of your own...

I'd say that you should use your best judgement, as you already have: you 'enjoyed the first one, but not so much that I would rush out to buy the second...' so you've already made your decision. If your own inclination is to hold back and go another direction, follow that.

In reponse to the previous few posts that were posted more than a month ago...
I think the second book in the Bartimaeus trilogy is much more engaging and entertaining than The Dragonrider. I had a hard time reading The Dragonrider, because its story and language seem to be aimed at very young readers and are too purile even for me. I decided to start reading The Dragonrider because I really enjoyed one of Funke's other books, The Thief Lord. The Golem's Eye, on the other hand, was really fun and enjoyable to read, although a little bit less than The Amulet of Samarkand, mostly because its protagonist has grown from a little boy that invites sympathy to an obnoxious adolescent.
Usually, if I find that I'm taking a long time to read a book, such as a few weeks, I would just stop reading it and move on to another one. The really good books usually take no longer than a few days to read, simply because one cannot stop reading it, even though one may be very busy.
Ptolemy's Gate will not be out until next year here in the US. Is it really out already somewhere else?
