Daenerys Theory

Okay, so he's not technically released from his vows. But if the wall does come down, and the Others overrun it, leaving most of the Watch either dead of in their wake, then Jon, as Lord Commander, will be in an unprecedented position to "redifne" the role of the Night's Watch. I'm sure he would stay as true as possible to their vows, but he also wouldn't just stay at the ruins of the wall and "guard" the kingdom from a threat that has already passed them by.

Yes, thats what I think.

It would be more fun if you disagreed with me....

well I didnt want to say it, but all of you people and your theories are batty. This is whats gonna happen:

Jon discovers he enjoys wearing women's clothes. When Dany shows up, the two "hook-up Caligula-style" but in the morning, she awakes to the sight of him in her "delicates". She immediately has her dragon's destroy him.
Gregor Clegane, now a Septon, eats the dragons, declaring them "Delicious! Just like chicken!" Performs wedding ceremony for:
Walder Frey, now over 100 years old, takes un-Cat (or as I like to call her; Sushi-Sue) as his next wife. Names a bottle of wine as his next heir.

I've heard that one before. A very common theory that GRRM has neither confirmed nor denied.

Only one line in their vows actually refers to the Wall. The rest of them don't specify exactly where they need to be in order to protect the kingdom. If their roles as protectors of the kingdom only extended the width and breadth of the Wall, they'd never range, would they? The Wall is only a tool they use to guard the kingdom. They, the Night's Watch, are the real wall that stands between the realm and the dangers in the North. If the Wall falls, their vows aren't obsolete. That's like saying if their fire goes out or their sword is broken, if one of them fathers a child on one of the whores in Mole's Town, then their vow is moot. Their commitment extends beyond all of that.

Good point Arya. Not you, TG. :p

Any thoughts on what Jon may do if the wall does come down? He doesn't exactly have a huge army under him, and a lot of them would likely die anyway when the wall falls. Of course, you have Stannis and his men there to contend with as well, but Jon doesn't control them.

At the end of Storm of Swords, Stannis' army helps the Night's Watch defeat the wildlings. What I don't remember is whether or not we learned what was done with all the Wildling casualties beyond the wall. Did the book end before we learned what was done about all the casualties? Were the bodies all burned? Or did other factors play a role to lead folks to "forget" to deal with the casualties....because if this is the case, I would think a powerful Others army is potentially lying just outside the wall.

fooey on you! May your daughter wed a Frey! And not one of the "not-so-bad" one's either. She's gettin a "shaky" one!

My thoughts go back to my bigger "Stannis" theory.
I just have this image in my mind of Jon entering the Nightfort through the secret "Night's Watch-only" door hunting Stannis, Mel and/or the greater intelligence behind the others. Just my little theory though. Ill rewrite it about 10 pages into AFFC. :p

MSBorba, I'm pretty sure that the bodies had not been mentioned, but I'm thinking Jon and his men won't allow them to just lay there and rot.

Which leads me to wonder: can the dead be turned into wights, or do they have to be killed by the Others or a wight in order to rise again?

I remember when the Night's Watch were with Caester sp.? and his wives, he mentioned making sure to burn the dead and not just leave them out for fear of them returning as an Undead.

If the wall falls, Jon being the man he is, he will definitely go down with the ship. I think Jon will definitely die, but death doesn't always mean the end in this series.

That brings up another thought - what about the rest of the wildings that are still alive? They would still make a significant army, and are enemies of the Others as well as the rest of the 7 kingdoms. I'd have a hard time believeing that they'd follow Jon, since they feel he betrayed them. But they wouldn't follow Stannis either, would they?

You're right, Red, I don't think the wildlings would be keen to follow either Jon or Stannis. I'm betting some of them will see the necessity of staying and fighting, but a lot of them will have a "not my problem" attitude and leave to get their hands on some land.

Ned always wanted to repopulate the Gift..and the north is in need of some good men now. They'd have to work on those stiff, unbendable knees though...unless they could reach a compromise with Jon...
