Game of Thrones RPG

Im working on it....give me a week to write out some smallish campaign details and then Ill give out info, then you give me info and Ill bend the campaign around your characters and see what comes to be....

I appreciate the interest TSW, but while I do have what I want to do committed to paper and the major NPCs written out, I still dont have the book to make sure what I want to die jives with the rule book. I still have a couple days left on my own deadline.

Youll hear something soon.

I'd suggest doing the campaign like this. If everyone is mature, there is no need for rules other than what the GM says. No dice rolls, nothing, just good storytelling with the GM leading the players and making sure no one starts godmoding.

Jedi Council Forums - D U N E - Chronicles of the Imperium

These guys are running an interesting Dune campaign. Since Dune has royal houses, political intrigue, etc., I thought it might be relevant.

They post using a simple system once the game starts.

OOC: I'm talking out of character.

IC: Ser Barristan Selmy, inside the throne room at King's Landing.

Storytelling

Storytelling

Dialogue

TAG: Poster's Name whom you're waiting to interact with.

It makes it easier for everyone to see what is going on with everyone else. Plus everyone can talk OOC and discuss things that their character doesn't "know".

I can be mature sometimes.

Wait... the Jedi Council roleplays... Dune?!?!

Actually, if the Detroit Lions play football, then the Jedi Council could roleplay the Bene Gesserit.

The first professional football team to lose every single game during a sixteen game season. The owner could have hired me and any number of idiots off the street to go 0-16 for substantially less than the 100 million he paid out in salary last year.

Yeah, no joke. We could have given them the same numbers for less and been filthy rich even at 1/10th their salary.

If only they'd asked us beforehand.

But about theforce.net, they have a Star Wars RP forum and a Non Star Wars RP. They have a long, very long, game of Forgotten Realms going and a few others. But the Dune, I felt, was most relevant because it focused less on combat rolls and all that other BS and more on actual RPing. In fact, if you look at their character sheet, no numbers are involved. It's all group RPing.

I think I remember reading about GRRM and his buds playing Superworld and sometimes spending an entire night RPing and never actually getting around to rolling the dice.

Well the system we'll be using requires die rolls for more than just combat...

You know how most GMs use a screen to keep the players from seeing their notes. I never had notes...so I tried one game (when I was 14) without the screen and the players could see all the dice at all the times. Horrible horrible game....everyone died horribly. Only complete party wipe Ive ever been a part of. Why? because I had no flexibility. The dice never rule the game. No matter what the dice say if you do something smart, you do something smart....and the opposite would be true as well. Dice rolling will be kept to a minimum, if they are not needed I have no problem wiht shelving em.

But....I like combat, or rather I like the direct competition that is tied to die rolls. I like combat, I like battling with my wits, I like the social interactions of games like L5R that are tied to dice. I am not a diplomat in fuedal japan no matter how hard I try, but the dice let me be for the sake of a game. I love roleplaying, and I think the dice are the vehicle by which the RP is given meaning.

I guess the tl;dr version would be, "I plan on rolling dice"

EDIT: Just wanted to add, I sent my resume off to the Lions in the middle of last season as a joke. I included my 215-12 Madden 08 and 09 record as proof that Id be a better GM than Matt Millen. I also added my 6 NCAA national titles in that same time span. I still havent heard back for them. It looked official and everything.

I plan on doing something similar for the Milwaukee Bucks.

Choosing Sides: ASOIAF RPG Campaign

Overview
The campaign will center on mature themes of love, honor, duty and moral choices. Very little if any slapstick will be evident as the players explore the events that led up to the fall of House Targaryen. The players will surround and skirt those events hinted at in the book but will never quite be the center of that piece of history. From the tourney of Harrenhall onward the players will have their own unique story that will intertwine with the history of Westeros.

Location
While the idea is to eventually explore most of the continent of Westeros (and more, who knows) initial play will begin in the environs surrounding the ruined keep of Summerhall. Characters should limit themselves to being from the Dornish Marches, The Reach, or the Storm Lands. Exceptions will be allowed for well-written bios, but all characters will need a reason to be going to Harrenhall for the big tourney.

Character Creation
Dice rolls being what they are, each prospective character should start as a background/description page with the following sections.

Personal History
Personality
Quirks
Motivations
Optional: Character Goals

Keep character submissions at less than two pages. Preferably less than one, but that’s not an issue. After receiving submissions, a dialogue will be started to actually build the character according to the rulebook. At this point details can be changed as long as the integrity of the character is maintained.

Scope
The Characters will be caught up in events larger than themselves, but more often will find themselves embroiled in plots that they can manage. Sure theres a rebellion coming, but all the minor lords and lordlings have their own games to play and the players will be the perfect pawns.
To that end none of the characters should have ties to any “movers and shakers” to begin play. There will be no “My character is Rhaegars golf caddy” or “My character is the fourth Baratheon son, ya know, the one that’s not a stoned face ass, fratbrother, or pooper pounder”…
However I do encourage research into and ties to other minor houses. If you research and cant find enough information on a given branch, make it up. We’ll roll with the punches if later information changes things.
I encourage family mottos. The Lannisters have two….why cant everyone?

Submissions
Provided we have more than 6 entries some submissions will have to be judged and some eliminated. All submissions will be judged with a light pen. Im not a Rhode Scholar, and I don’t expect everyone else to be. I will judge almost solely on character development potential, ease of integrating into a party, usefulness of skill set, and pure whimsy (not necessarily in that order). If something intrigues me its going to have an easier time getting in.
The campaign will consist of 3-6 characters. Less than three submissions means the campaign doesn’t have as much interest as I thought and it likely wont be happening. More than 6 means I/we will have to pare it down. 1 submission per person.
I don’t wish to place my personal email on the boards, so send me a PM for submission methods.

Note: I still don’t have the core rulebook. I ask anyone who submits a character be flexible. I did notice theres a minor house creation system, so maybe we’ll create our own house with the characters and move forward from their. At this point, be flexible.

They have golf in Westeros?

Good work, Egg. My character will be submitted tomorrow. Oooooh, I'm excited.

Slight change in plans--this is why I shouldnt have posted before I received the book.

The RPG setting has lots of rules tied directly to House influence. In fact it recommends having the PCs (player characters) come from the same House. With that in mind I think it sounds like a terrific idea.

Lets plan on a House of Dornish descent that its founder threw his lot in with the Targaryens when they came to conquer Dorne and was rewarded by being made a Lord in the service of the Reach and is now trusted by neither side umpteen generations later. Ill write more details in a more formal manner later.

Hey this sounds like a lot of fun! I have played 2nd and 3rd edition AD&D casually off and on for the past 8 years, but the people I played with have gone their separate ways. Although I've never gamed over the internet, I want to get back into it. I wish I had stumbled onto this post earlier! Let me do some research on the AGOT rpg and I'll draft up a quick character for your revision in a couple days.

On a side note, a perfect example of a group of aforementioned munchkins can be found by picking up a copy of Knights of the Dinner Table. It's a comic book about a group of friends in a small town rural community who get together every week and game. They take power gaming to the max and exaggerate common gaming stereotypes. Hilarious stuff, here's a link to one of their older strips if anyone's interested.

On yet another side note, hey video game simulations work for the military, why not the NFL?

Okay...Ive sent feedback to everyone thats sent me something. We have enough to start but Ive not given enough time to everyone thats interested. Im going to call the deadline 17 April. Ill be out of town on the 13th-15th, so dont expect feedback then. Ill post one last time on the thread letting everyone know who's in.

Ill eventually start up a new thread in here letting everyone know how its going. Maybe someone could guarantee themselves a spot by volunteering to be the campaign reporter type.

Thanks to everybody who has expressed interest. My biggest fear was I would be stuck running a game with just me and Boaz (you knew he'd enter). I would be forced to keep up with his typing.

I would be forced to keep up with his typing.
Oh no, he's on to me!!!

I'll give you others a chance to volunteer as reporter, first. I'll take it on as a last resort.

Speaking of the Order of the Stick. I've found two spoofs of RPGs that are a lot funnier, in my opinion. First, there is the webcomic The DM of the Rings. Here's the premise, what if a DM who loves Tolkien ran a Lord of the Rings game for a group of power gamers who'd never heard of Middle-earth. The comic features stills from the movies, mockery of "roll" players, and a moral for each strip. The players make a mockery of the Council of Elrond, desecrate Balin's tomb, and stole Galadriel's boats.

Next is the brilliant (if you're in the mood, if not then it's probably annoying) parody of Dungeons & Dragons... The Gamers. If you've ever role played, then you should find this extremely humorous. Here's a sample...

GM: You're going to backstab him... with... a... ballista?
Thief: Uh-huh.
GM: With a &%#@ siege weapon?
Thief: Uh-huh.
GM: I can't believe I'm doing this.
[rolls the dice]
GM: Well, that's 264 points of damage. You splatter Hunk all over the common room. The patrons shriek in horror and run out of the inn, occasionally slipping on blood and entrails. You're now alone in a room that looks like a vat of beef stroganoff exploded in it.
Mage: [wiping his face] Cool.

Okay. I bought the book today. I ordered it from my local store on Monday and they got it today!

Valhalla's Game Center is the best store.... ever. If you need help getting the book, call them asap.

Oh, I haven't heard anything about this in a long while. I assumed it was dead, or am I out of the game?

Bahaha...cant a deadline slip by 6 days without it being all doom and gloom?

Ive gotten 4 submission...so all 4 are in. 2 characters overlap too much so I need to work something out with the second character...and send that person a copy of our House info.

So tsw, if you were planning on buying a book please do so.

Final board announcement to come tomorrow.

Thanks for your patience

If I'd caught on quicker I'd have joined in with this. I've never done anything like it before but I'd love to give it a go and I think I'd be pretty good at it.

Ghost, you should reread Egg's posts on submissions of characters. If I recall correctly, type up your character concept and PM it to him.

tsw, Egg was out of town for a week or so, I think. Don't worry, I don't think he's the type to just blow us off. This will not be like a game of Tic-Tac-Toe, it's gonna take a year or two to play.

As always...what Boaz said is correct...send me a character idea. The ones Ive gotten so far have been excellent.

And yes please take the long view with this, my time is what it is....as Im sure yours is. I have at least 5 months of material written out as of right now, with NPCs, some book interation, multiple layers of intrigue that youll probably never realize is going on and some combat....

So please Ghost submit some sort of retainer for House Blacktree (fictional)...or you could play the mom....bahahaha...we have their guardcaptain, soldier, huntsmaster, and youngest daughter taken care of....

Things like artisan, singer, maester, middle son/skirt chaser, young ward/squire, other retainer, lady of the house, etc can still be reasonably filled....put something down and we can go from there. This has been sort of a group effort so far and I mean to keep it that way.

Send me a PM and include your email address and Ill send out the House details....
