Best "Star Trek" captain?

Sorry, Archer is passable in, 'Enterprise,' but nothing special, it's the original series, 'Quantum Leap,' I detest

So Ace are you saying you didn't like Quantum Leap? Mmmm this could impact on our friendship, I love Quantum Leap. have every episode, though it was a rather innovative idea and Scott Bakula was terribly handsome and polite and kind and sweet and................... Ok there were some episodes that were just a little corney but overall it was fun light entertainment.

Captain Christopher Pike.

I would have loved a series with Jeff Hunter as the captain, but sadly 'twas not to be (his choice, from what I hear, Momoka, letting a little movie success go to his head and asking too much money). I also loved the style of universe in that episode, which got filtered a little as Kirk grew into the role through the first season.

Though, I have to say, MPC's arguments are quite compelling ;)

You almost swayed me, MPC. Too bad I'd already voted before reading your post.

Yeah, I chose Picard but, like many of you, I do find it hard to choose between him and Sisko. TNG is my favorite of all the Star Trek series too, but I liked DS9 almost as much. Hmm ... maybe as much.

Only one other person likes Enterprise? Really? I couldn't help enjoying it. Sure, it deviated from the history of the Star Trek universe, but what the hey. It had some good stuff going for it too: the temporal war, the Xindi, and, of course Dr. Phlox - the best doctor of them all. And who can forget T'Pol? At least Archer had a science officer who would look good in leather if she wore it. Besides, Scott Bakula really isn't such a bad actor, and I think he did a fair job. Certainly not as good as Picard and not nearly as cool as Sisko, but Archer was all right.

At the risk of contradicting myself, while I chose Picard as my favorite among the captains, he wasn't my favorite character in TNG and Sisko was my favorite in DS9. DS9 was in fact the only one in which my favorite character happened to be the captain ... go figure. In each, the characters I found the most interesting were Spock, Data, Sisko, Seven of Nine, and Dr. Phlox. I would have chosen Odo in DS9, but Sisko was in whole different league.

With due to all the respect for Kirk and the others, there is only one captain: Benjamin Sisko.

Actually I liked Captain Ransom of the USS Equinox (from Voyager) - I'd rather have someone willing to ditch the Prime Directive, hell, all moral and ethical constraints, to get his crew home, than someone willing to sacrifice them for a 'politically correct' standpoint.

Picard as an actor, though!

I am unable to choose between Kirk and Picard. Not seen much of Sisko, and Janeway annoyed the hell out of me! As for Archer...well, it's just not Trek is it?

Kirk started it all and kicks ass, and Picard is who I remember most from when my dad watched it when I was a kid (I'm 17 now). Yeah, ST:TNG holds a lot of just the general gist of what I always used to call "dad's TV" when I was younger - the sheer essence of it I mean, so I have huge affection for it. Now it's my TV as well as my dad's because I've finally got into the whole genre rather than just Doctor Who!

The uniforms in TNG kick the crap outta the ones in TOS though, and Stewart is by far the best actor the show ever saw. Data is adorable too, and the whole thing is VERY intellectual. A lot of fans brand it boring but I don't see that, it's no more boring than some of the seven part Doctor Whos from the 1960s (which I adore), it just sometimes takes a while to get into - only sometimes! Usually it's beautiful, both on screen and in context.

TOS has some of the most emotional storylines I've seen in science fiction, and is always a pleasure to watch. For the day, the cosmetics are fantastic, as is the picture quality.

Undecided.

This is one of those arguments that's never going to get resolved. Each of the captains were completely different and had differing qualities. I like Kirk and Picard in equal measure, but not for the same reasons.

Kirk for me. The others are just followers. I read out the Enterprise entry to my other half,we both had a good laugh at that. She said you're not a true sci fi fan if you don't like Quantum Leap! Actually Bakula didn't do a bad job of Captain Archer!

Piccard, mostly because TNG was the Star Trek I grew up watching, and because I could never take Kirk seriously.
Janeway was far to up herself, and as much as I liked Sisco he didn't have the charm of Piccard.
Never really watched Enterprise.

I am a Kirk fan first, then Sisko, then Picard. I voted Sisko first though since I knew Kirk would be well represented, though people sure do love Picard! I liked him too but other captains were deeper in my opinion.

You're all wrong! It's Captain Pike, of course! :p:p:p:p

BEEP. BEEP. :D

Picard all the way ; there's so much depth to the man. Just when you think you're getting to know him , an episode like 'Inner Light' (perhaps the most beatifully scripted pieces of tv i've ever seen) or 'All Good Things' comes along.

You've gotta love Kirk (it was criminal the way he was bumped off though) , though his recklessness and lack of diplomacy make him a poor choice for Captain. I've always considered Zap Brannigan to be Kirk on an average day!

I thought that the connection between Data and Picard was much more interesting and intense than that between Kirk and Spock in the tv series. Strangely enough , I thought that in the films Kirk and Spock's relationship was much more interesting , whilst Data in his films was just - annoying

Hey what about the first pilot guy.

Square jaw, muscular and a pioneer in every sense of the world.

What about Spock and all the other crew that went on to be captains in their own right.

That aside.

The young lad in the monster massive ship that tried to tractor beam them off to justice.

You know the one in the mask like the horror film - He was good and deserved an Oscar

Janeway for me. She was the first women Captain shown, and was brilliant.
Well, Rachel Garrett was the first Starfleet Captain shown. In Yesterday's Enterprise set in 2344, Garrett was captain of the starship USS Enterprise-C. There was a great buzz among female fans at the time the episode aired about her being a female Captain.
