Best "Star Trek" captain?

Didn't Patrick (piccard) try to walk of the set of the last movie he was in? I do agree the old films had far better scripts and were far more impressive than the new - the old writers had far more imagination for the grandure that they wanted to bring to startrek it seems.

Picard for me. The right balance of authority and humanity.
In real life who on Earth would ever give a starship to Kirk?!

I've never seen the Quantum Leap bloke so I can't say about him.

Sisko (sp?) is very good and would get my second vote, although to me he will always be Commander Sisko. Once he grew that facial hair he seemed to get a bit full of himself.

Such a difficult choice between Kirk and Picard... you hafta remember that Kirk was hampered by poor special effects, and Picard brought real gravitas to the role. But for me it's Kirk, by a hair... I watched the originals in the 60s, and although (now) they can look cheesey, they were great at the time, something to really look forward to.

Too many for him to baldy go anywhere, in fact.

I don't think Kirk's performance has aged well, particularly on those occasions - which were more than occasional - when he was making a speech. I suspect Picard will always look authoritative.

I don't really ask anyone for help so if I do it would probably be pretty major. I remember watching a Star Trek episode when they went to the planet Data was created on and saw the way he treated Weasly Crusher when he sugested that Lore had replaced Data. I fear authority enough to not go to ones that appear nice enough. I for sure wouldn't go to him. I wouldn't have even dared make the suggestion. I'd be more likely to go to Counselor Tori than even the doctor. That's how I feel about picard. Kirk seems nicer and spock seems nice too. I think I'd probably be more likely to approach Janeway than Picard as well. if I felt that I was going to face something I couldn't bear I'd be more likely to seek a quick death than try to explain it to a person in authority. I definitely wouldn't try Picard or Wrker. Maybe Tori. Now I'd feel much different about Data or Seven of Nine. To me Androids would be more likely to help me.

TNG has the better tv series , whereas TOS has the better movies - by a long way. All TNG movies seem to centre around Data and suffer as a result

Also TNG gets MUCH better the further into the series you go , while much of the last seies of TOS is awful.

Agreed, season 3 of TOS was woeful for the most part.

In the context of the era, it was quite something to see what was essentially a weekly movie. Special effects on TV? Compare some of the Outer Limits, Lost In Space and Voyage To The Bottom Of The Sea episodes with what they achieved on Trek.

Kirk, too, was of his era (or more accurately, ours). Authoritative, virtually fearless but occasionally fragile and misguided. He was the gun-toting Sheriff with a Galaxy, instead of a township, to protect. There is, I feel, a greater sense of frontiersmanship in TOS and a greater feeling of isolation in potentially hostile territory.

It's a matter of record that Roddenberry intended to create a western with ray guns at a time when the popularity of TV westerns was beginning its decline, so the lineage is readily apparent.

The brief for TNG was, I suspect, quite different.

If we're comparing actors, I have to side with those who pick Stewart. His performances were never (as far as I recall) histrionic. His quoting "what a piece of work is a man" to Q is, perhaps, one of the most sublime scenes in any of the Trek franchises. I dread to think what Shatner would have made of such a scene, even in his prime.

But Kirk (along with Spock, McCoy, Uhura, Sulu, Chekov and Scotty) were magical on screen together and in choosing Kirk, I choose them all.

Kirk. Although the others were fine he will always be, for me, the first and best.

Picard? I'd be just waiting for him to put me in the brig.

First, I'm a great Picard fan. I had my doubts about him in the first episode when he said to Q, "We surrender". Not what James T. Kirk would have done. But as the series progressed, I fell in love with his character. I'm more like Picard than Kirk, myself, but then I don't go flying around the galaxy. Favourite Kirk quote: The Enterprise can either proceed and possibly face destruction. Kirk: "What is the mission of this starship, Commander? To explore new worlds. And that's exactly what we're going to do. Mr. Sulu, ahead, warp speed."

By far it's Janeway. She was in an unexplored region of space with no connection resources, perssonel, or anything of the like. But yet she managed to keep moral, ressources and defenses up. She suceeded in returning home without aid of another ship, only of Starfleet Command, some would say she only got home because of her future self, but truthfully the fact that her future self can come back is proof enough that she does suceed in returning back to earth.

Picard! Bald, brave and did alright with the ladies. :D
