It does, however, contradict Arya's theory that reading the scene might make people think, which is what I was responding to.

Kelpie, the key word here is "might." Not "does," "should," or "will." And it appears that the scene did in fact make some people think. You and Fairy Queen, for example, read the scene and thought quite a bit about the negative impact it could have. Obviously the scene is thought-provoking, and might make people think further and have varied reactions, some of which might be a change in the way they previously thought (or didn't at all) about rape.

A handful of readers who happen to post on this board do not in any way summarize how all readers may or may not react to something.

I don't know why..but personally speaking a rape scene, depending on how its written, can be more disturbing than other scenes of bloodshed and torture. Mebbe its something to do with been a woman and the image of violation and powerlessness that it evokes

And I completely understand. I think the (longwinded:) ) point that I was trying to make is that we are all shaped by our own personalities and experiences and situations, so it's quite natural for one person to react strongly to a scene while another is hardly bothered by it at all.

 gottcha...ya gotta spell out for me sometimes

and I agree with you...what I found quite distasteful and unworthy of his talents were his description of some of the other races  /o\

There is no agreement on whether this scene should have been written in.

That just comes down to opinion. What doesnt!?!

Martin makes me think too much about the attrocities of people in this world. I'm 37. I've seen my fair share... Who will deny that a single case of abuse can ruin many lives? I would like for Martin to come up with some good reflections on why humans do what they do. If he does not, then what am I to chew upon? If he continues to throw this kind of behaviour at us and does not at some point force the reader to reflect on what is actually happening, then how are we to interpret this story? Bring in a higher retribution and smooth over all our pains?

I am simply not so keen upon this as 'fantasy'.

What does that mean? I guess it just means I prefer several authors above and over Martin. Though I will finish this series.

... I am a man. I think too much.
Hence DragonLance doesnt 'do' it for me :p
