Taena Merryweather

I kind of like the theory she is Dornish and working for Dorne with Varys pulling all the strings. But she may weel be working for Littlefinger as well. Petyr does have it in for Cersei and tells Sansa as much in AFFC.

How could she be Dornish? That doesn't make sense. And if she was a plant from Varys that is an extremely complicated ruse. Pass her off as Myrish then marry her to a very minor lord for years and years, bear a child, all that jazz, only to have her befriend the queen for about a month or so? Sure she was working for someone at the end, but I don't see the point of forging the entire life of someone for that purpose. Any courtier with ambition would have served just as well if not better.

Sometimes I think we see interconnections and plots where none exist. I think Taena is exactly what she seems, an ambitious woman who uses her exotic beauty and pleasing words to gain the favor of powerful people. Her pirate connection is just color....if yer a spy you dont tell a story that connects you to your benefactor. I dont think theres anything here...and this from a guy who starts threads about crackpot conspiracy theories.

I dunno... so I'll post two answers.

1. Aegon, yes, Taena is exactly what she appears. It is known.

2. Come on and give Martin more credit than that! You know nothing, Aegon.

In response I give two acknowledgements....

1. Exactly

2. Exactly

You are absolutely correct.

PS - Always remember... Boaz knows nothing! It is known.

Sarella is actually Alleras the Sphinx that is encountered in the prologue and later by Sam in Oldtown. It is known.

But Sarelle is a Sand Snake (or FEMALE), and Alleras is a guy.

Many people are assuming Sarella = Arellas.

Pro:
The name is reversed. This seems like just the sort of move that a Sand Snake would think was clever, but that serious players (like Doran and Littlefinger) would find laughable.
Iirc, none of the Sand Snakes appear to be overly curvaceous of form. Iirc, all are lean and athletic. Makes sense that Sarella would be like the others... and Arellas is lean and athletic.
Arellas seems to be in his late teens. Sarella, younger than her sisters, would probably be right around the same age, but she could be a little older and pretend to be a boy who does not really have facial hair.
The three Sand Snakes we've met all seem to have had martial training. So, it would be logical that Sarella has training too. Arellas is a master of the bow.
Sarella is on a secret mission outside of Dorne. Dorne's rival and bitter enemy is Highgarden. Arellas is in Oldtown, a city belonging to Highgarden.
One definition of Sphinx is "a mysterious person." Why does Arellas need to be known as mysterious?

Con:
We've not been told what Sarella looks like.
We don't know where she is.
Martin has not made this connection for us yet.

Also note that the Sand Snakes are suggesting different plans and options for Dorne to take in the war and one of those is for Dorne to launch a surprise attack across the Red Mountains and sack Oldtown. Sarella may well be there for reconnaisance.

However, given how concerned that Doran is about the other Sand Snakes (he locks them up, even) he doesn't seem too bothered about the potential chaos Sarella may wreck. Perhaps then she is working for Doran directly?

But yeah, I'd say it was virtually inevitable that Sarella = Alleras.

The best kind of lie

I believe that it was a case where Cersei believed what she wanted to be true.

A 'guy' that is described as 'comely' and has no facial hair... though 'he' does have a widow's peak, which Oberyn had also. ;)

There are other hints as well - read the section where Leo Tyrell is speaking to 'Alleras'. He says 'a lord's son should be open-handed': 'Alleras' replies 'I am no lord's son, I've told you that.' Clearly Leo doesn't believe it.

So, to beat this horse again and pick up on my musings on the Maggy the Frog thread (that nobody really ran with :( )

Some suggest that her pirate lover was Jaqen. Could she be a Faceless Man???

I thought the idea was her lover was Sallador Saan (if thats spelled correctly), Stannis' somewhat reluctant privateer as it were.

You know because her lover was a pirate....Sallador is a pirate. Dont ya see?

Its all very obvious when you think about it

Yeah, yeah, yeah, that's the obvious connection but GRRM sometimes throws a curveball at us. If you read back a page or so in the thread, someone suggests that it was Jaqen and nobody really jumped up and NO, it can't be!!!

Another thought just ocurred to me, could it had been Euron? Probably not.

But could Taena, as a shady "foreigner" with questionable and hidden motives be a Faceless Man? I may be racially profiling here...

Need....to....be....more....obvious....with my sarcasm.

The problem with the theory that Jaqen is her former lover, is 1) Jaqen wears many faces, but does he duplicate them? Or are we to assume that is his real face, the one Arya sees. I dont see one of the worlds premiere assasins being so softhearted around Arya to do that. A debt is a debt but thats a little too far. And its pointless to be able to wear other faces if youre going to use the same one all the time, 2) I can easily see the similar description being overlooked by any editor, thats the sort of thing you really have to be looking for to find.

And if you are a suspicious shady foreigner type, you dont tell stories about your lover the assasin.

Just my opinion that Jaqen and Taena arent connected, but as we all know....I am a blithering idiot half the time....please dont ask about the other half, it involves a wading pool of lime green jello.
