Books You Shouldn't Read

Inside the Third Reich by Albert Speer. I remember reading it aged about fourteen when a mini series of his life was on, and feeling a little sorry for him, however reading it again in my twenties I found his constant whining about how it wasn’t his fault and he did not really do anything too much to take. My copy of this book was propelled across the room, bounced off the wall and fell into a waste paper bin.

We all have different tastes, I enjoy Terry Brooke's, nice relaxing read.
I'd say never read Terry Goodkind or anything David Eddings wrote after the Sparhawk books.

The Sword of Shanara was a bit rough but, an enjoyable read. Other book Ive read by him was Running With the Demon which was a really good book!

Ive read Wizards First Rule , It was a good book but ive never had ay desire to read anymore in the series . Ive read the first two Sparhawk books by Eddinf Pretty dire stuff.

Running With the Demon is a cracking read. Brooks has written a lot of dross but his Knight of the Word series, of which RWTD is the first, is up there with best.

I'm not a big Brooks fan but there's a reason its got its fans; it's solid enough genre work at least.

I too would struggle to defend anything Eddings did from Redemption of Althalus on though, unless one is actively seeking the pits of Fantasy. However! A large part of what makes them awful is how clearly the Eddings are recycling their own work, and I do wonder if someone who's not read the early ones would feel so strongly about them.

They recycled their own work?!

I only read the Belgariad and that was already the photocopy of a photocopy of a mimeograph of Tolkein!

(okay. i'll subside now.)

... this probably isn't the place to talk about Tolkien rip-offs, but I'm beginning to get somewhat vexed with the idea that every quest fantasy with a Wizard and that starts in Tolkien is a rip-off of him. It's a distortion that devalues the genre's mythic and legendary underpinnings, and the many other early authors who wrote in the genre who influenced people. It's about as accurate as calling Tolkien a MacDonald rip-off, which I might have to start doing.

But, yes, the Eddings recycled their own work. And how. Tbf, there's a lot of 80s fantasy authors who did that sort of thing, but I feel they were some of the worse of it. Character archetypes would frequently reappear with the same personality traits, similar cultural mixes, similar plot patterns (which to an extent was a deliberate point at times)... the Elenium and Tamuli were different enough, the rest not

Not the thread to be bringing this up but I used to believe that it couldn't be fantasy without elves, wizards etc and that was before I read Tolkien.
Thank goodness I discovered online forums and a rich vein of different hues of fantasy.

There are books out there that for me should never have seen the light of day but I also know we all have different tastes and no one should ever be ridiculed for their choice in literature.
I for one can't judge, I did read some of the Gor books, Stuck with Goodkind's Sword of Truth up to about book 7, the first 3 were ok, I believed the others would get better, I was wrong. I tortured myself with Newcomb's Fifth Sorceress.

I also read the full translation of The Malleus Maleficarum.
