Rick Berman Talks Series 5

I am not sure at all about Bakula.... Really dont know... Saw him in the Q leap series and was not impressed... I think we need a younger captain whether it be a man / women....

How about an alien captain..... not a human one

Good idea. They seem to want to (from all the rumours which you cannot trust) make this series more like TOS and TNG, to get back to the original idea. I heard the ship will be called 'Enterprise'. Whereas, maybe they should go for more weird, more different....

<<Robnhud tells TrekWeb that according to a report by one of his informants, the series will indeed feature a pre-TOS starship Enterprise with Scott Bakula as its captain, and that the pilot episode will feature the first botched meeting with the Klingons.>>

I've been around all my rumour sites today, and they are all recycling the same old rumours. It begins to be quite amusing. The general opinion is that the Pre-TOS idea has been made up, the Trek Today cast list is OUT. However, the Timeship called Enterprise, with Scott Bakula as Captain, set in 26th Century is generally accepted now as gospel truth. The only new thing is this 'Klingon first contact' for the pilot episode. If it is indeed a Timeship, there would still be nothing to prevent this. The first contact with the Klingons was botched, it is mentioned somewhere in TOS.

yeah i think the reason for the whole TOS era war with the Klingons was due to this "botched" first contact...it would be interesting to see... but possibly similar to the B5 first contact with the Mimbari...

And who knows, maybe Bakula's captain could be an alien...they still have plenty of scope for exploring a vulcan or klingon in the big chair, as well as possibly one of the other races, or a currently unknown one...

MMMM i do hope the series is about a timeship.. that would give it soooo much scope and exciting story lines... I think they should have an alien captain...

Come bernman... stop keeping us holding on... TELL US..

I also thought that Scott Bakula's character could be an alien.

On the subject of 'Klingon First Contact' I found this stuff:

Few firm details exist on the early contacts between the Federation and the Klingon. The Original Series episode 'Day of the Dove' established that First Contact took place in 2218, while according to the TNG episode 'First Contact', (not the film) the initial meeting was a disastrous event that led to nearly a century of hostilities. However, according to the TOS episode 'Errand of Mercy', hostilities actually ended less than half a century later, when the Organian Peace Treaty was established in 2267. Little else is known about early Federation-Klingon history, so if this news is true, producers will be free to develop the Klingon backstory without violating much of established Star Trek continuity.

Majel Barrett-Roddenberry has said that she would not like "the re-writing of Gene's story." She wondered how there could be a ship called Enterprise before the Original Series, and mentioned to that Gene had said Spock was the first Vulcan in Starfleet.

Apparently there will be a promo after the voayger finale on May 23rd... in the US

It's kept us going this long on basically nothing certain at all!

Well i think Berman and his croneys are loving all this .. Bet they sit in their big offices laughing their socks off at all the rumours

They do read it. I read that they do laugh too, but they also get worried when it's true, because they often have only shown it to a handful of people.

On a good note - it gives them instant fan reaction to ideas - so they have time to change things and hopefully make it better. And also, hopefully it could prove to the TV executives that there is a demand for the programme to be made.

I have just read this.... George Taki... ow dear hope he does not get shouted at ??

Source: GeorgeTakei.COM

George Takei talks about the 35th anniversary of Star Trek, the failure of the 'Excelsior Campaign' and his thoughts on the next Star Trek TV series at his official website. Here are some excerpts :

"For the past year, an international association of fans calling itself the Excelsior Campaign, spearheaded by Russ Haslage of Ohio, has been advocating for a new Star Trek series called 'Star Trek Excelsior'" Takei wrote "It was their idea to recapture that invigorating spirit of adventure with Captain Sulu commanding the Starship Excelsior. It was an amazing effort. Wherever I went in the world, whether Europe, Asia or Latin America, there were groups of fans organized as part of the Excelsior Campaign. They were dedicated, energetic activists. Whether German, British, Japanese or Brazilian, they were the kind of fans who, throughout the 35-year history of the show, galvanized and directed the course of Gene's creation. I was impressed, honored and most certainly humbled by their dedication and devotion"

"Alas, it was not to be. I learned recently that Paramount producer Rick Berman has decided to go in another direction - backward, to be precise. The next Star Trek series he has decided on is to go to the beginning of the Federation - to a time our generation had long gone past. I understand that they are now casting for this new show and this project is moving ahead. I wish him well in this endeavor".

I posted yesterday about everyone recycling old rumours. The fact is that George Takei doesn't know anything and neither does Majel Barret-Roddenberry.

But to prove that Rick Berman does read the web gossip here is something from 'Ain't it cool news' who 'claim' to have a script of the first episode but don't want to say too much about it, so they keep 'leaking little bits:

<<Oh, and special thanks to the Paramount plants in talkback...you guys think you're so clever, don't you? ;-P Ahh...that's what makes talkback so cool!

I know, a lot of readers want us to post "more specifics" from the script we've seen, like by posting pages of the script...well, here's a lesson to a few of you, some of the people asking for that probably work for Paramount as well, and are trying to bait us into an open-and-shut lawsuit. Posting pages would get us sued so fast, we'd be...umm...sued.

The most disturbing rumour I've seen about this series is that Scott Bakula may NOT be in the running for Captain anymore. What?

Our pal Viacom Girl says that the word is that he's no longer being considered. I hope there are some great actors in the running, because ultimately, a great cast, and specifically, a great Captain, could save this show from even the worst writing. I, for one, happen to think that if ANYONE could make Star Trek Series 5 a success, it would be Scott Bakula.>>

You see, you can't believe them either. Making people come back every day because they think you might just leak a little more of the 'Holy Grail' script you have. And blaming the fact you can't leak any more of it on Paramount!

well i reckon Paramount are the ones starting all this off... Sorry for posting a rumour that had been recycled...

Actually, I enjoy reading all the rumors, whether they turn out to be true or not. Like David, I find them amusing.

Personally, I would be more interested in watching a series based on the 26th century timeship concept than the pre-TOS idea.

Also, although I enjoy story-arcs, I am also a fan of stand-alones because it is less of a hassle if you miss an episode or get stuck watching them out of order.

I'm still a bit iffy on the choice of Scott Bakula (if this indeed is eventually confirmed).

Majel Barrett-Roddenberry always has very strong opinions on what should be done with anything associated with Gene Roddenberry's name. I believe she is an exec. producer of Earth: Final Conflict. Anyone know the specifics of her business relationship with the ST franchise?

little star :star:

I agree.. not sure about scot bakula... at all

I wasn't flaming you Neo, honest!

I was only making the point that people such as George Takei & Majel Barrett-Roddenberry shouldn't speak about things they know nothing about.

Anyhow, if it IS to be a pre-TOS series, here are:
TEN of the things that Series V would have to have, so as not to destroy Trek continuity:

1) Klingons without the bumpy heads, something Worf said "Klingons don't like to talk about", but which would have to be finally explained.

2) The S.S.Enterprise spaceship, since the U.S.S Enterprise was the first Federation Starship with that name.

3) Lose all those Okudagrams, and go back to some multi-coloured buttons that beeped and blooped in front of randomly flashing screens.

4) No Earth ships had view-screens pre TOS, they didn't have them during the Romulan wars.

5) No holodecks, that's 50% of story ideas lost!

6) Lasers instead of Phasers, as that's what Captain Pike had in 'The Cage',& no photon torpedoes.

7) Really naff uniforms, with all female officers wearing miniskirts!

8) Very primitive transporter technology and transporter psychosis.

9) No Prime Directive, not that any Captain obeys it anyway!

10) No sub-space radio, so no contact with Earth from the start to the end of a voyage.

----------------------------------------------------
As far as I know Gene Roddenberry lost control of the franchise during the first movies, after he died the batton was handed to Rick Berman, and although no one would want to deliberately go against the wishes of Majel Barrett-Roddenberry, she has no say whatsoever.

Some Star Trek fans seem to think that GR was God. If it makes a better story why not change something, I do hope though that they always remain faithfull to the established Trek Lore and continuity, because that would definitely spoil it for me.
