YKYBWTMSGWhen

Sphinx
Thanks for the link. That was great fun! It is official, I am a Stargate junkie (as if I didn't already know). 9 of 10, though I may demand a recount as I think I got them all correct (you know how Americans love to recount!).
This was a nice warm up as I prepare for 100 Days tonight!

YKYMBWTMS When. . .

All of your leisure time is now consumed with studying Egyptology. You buy books on it. You look it up on the net. You buy CD roms. You make pyramid-shaped teapots with ancient Egyptian symbols on them (oops, maybe that was just me).

Renee. . .;)

Tatter,

It comes on from a Michigan channel in the USA. Every weeknight!:)

And then you go on one dig in Israel and realiZe that the whole middle and near east is just waiting there for you to dig in.

And you're brain explodes!

"Tell es-Safi in 2001. Let's go dig up Goliath!"

Fantastic!

Rowan,

When are you going and who is sponsering?

Who is head archaeologist?

How long will you be gone and are you a digger or other personnel? (are you in publish or perish situation?)

Dig

Can't make it this year. We actually didn't think the site would be open, what with the political situation. I'm working as staff at GateCon this year and didn't plan ahead for funds or grants. Unless a rich unknown relitive dies, I'm looking at next year's dig.

The time frame is around 15 July to 15 Aug, 2001. It's a joint project of York University in Toronto, Canada and Bar Ilan University just outside Tel Aviv. Prof. Carl Erlich of the Biblical Studies University is the North American head and Dr. Aren Meyer handles the Israeli side. They work the project together as equals, so I've never seen one as above the other. Carl's PhD is in Biblical Studies and Aren's is in Arch, so I guess that would answer itself.

Me? Last year was my first step into any formal taste of arch or anthro. I'm self read and taught and went as a volunteer. By the end of the month, I was tagged as not only the site medic but the 'on site' forensic archaeologist [30 years in health care and being a combat medic in Desert Storm were perfect training for these jobs] as I can ID bones quite well [human from animal and approx. ages, etc].

My greatest gift was the primary team and staff accepting me as an 'equal', is the only way I can discribe it. My questions were not only answered but explained in detail. I was given a chance to work all aspects of a field dig, up to restoration - something none of the other volunteer and only the senior students there touched - and actually working as square supervisor for a couple of days.

My last day there, a gentleman who is finishing out his PhD in Cannanite ceramics came to me. {He's continental Russian, so I hope that explaines some of his courtly actions}. He took both my hands in one of his and touched my chest and then my forehead. "You may not yet have the papers, but in here and here your *are* an archaeologist. You have the feel, the senses... the heart. Go and get the papers when you are ready. They will not change what you already are."

He then told me that the staff on the dig said I should consider myself a 'professionally trained excavation archaeologist' and not a volunteer. That they would back me if others requested information of my working on other sites.

He then gave me a soft smile and leaned over and kissed my hand.

So... 'publish or perish'? Not right now. Just in the process of getting into a school to pull a current BS in soc/anthro. Then? Working with Carl and Aren [ or whoever they recommend] to move on to get a dual MS in anthro/arch and, later my doctorates.

I've finially found the love of my life. So what if it's late in my life. I cherish it. And mourn for those who never find theirs.

All you wanted was a quick reply. You got a brief flash fire of the deep feelings this project [and it's field] at Tell es-Safi brings out in me.

why would i want a quick reply, when i can get all that, it was facsinating, i love watching anything to do with archeology, its so interesting, and by what you wrote, you should go for it, and keep writing about it as much as you like, i'll never tyre of listening, so please keep it coming...peachy

Dig

Well ... last year's trip was dubbed 'The First Annual Dr. Daniel Jackson Aracheological Excavation', so I have to keep on going.

I brought Michael back one of the 'crew shirts' we made up for the dig and gave it to Chris to give to him when he saw him on the set the next Monday.

Our motto last year was "Dustbusters: The Search for Goliath" [as Tell Es-Safi is considered to be the site of the city of Gath, one of the 5 major Philistine cites and the birthplace of Goliath] which was printed in English and Hebrew on the front. On the back was a sketch of a person looking at a huge sandle with a puzzeled look on their face. And a small philistine style 'chicken' [a very specific pottery design to this area] snuggeled around the man's foot.

My major concern was if an 'XXL' would fit him or be too small. I know that sounds huge, but Israeli clothing sizes are a bit unique. My shirt is a 'XL' and I wear a US Med or Small.

The size range was from 'XXXXS' through 'XXXXXXL'. Just try and guess when you've never even seen the man close up.

I was not expecting a quick reply. I know what questions to ask. Where are you attending for BS now? Where for piled higher and deeper? Many Unis will accept field experience and life credits... But you have to get the school that plays to your expertese! (Outside my field ~ primates~my fave anthro was Clyde Snow!)

Fast reply

I got up really early today. :}

BS will probably be through 'The Evergreen St. College' on Olympia, WA or the 'University of Washington' in Seattle. I live in Tacoma and both have extension campuses here. I already an ATA in Comp Prog/Sys Analysis that Evergreeen will take as my first two years and both schools lean heavy into 'life experience credits'. Between health care, the military and arch/anthro, I can pull quite a few there.

Evergreen has a BS in soc., U of W has Soc, anthro and arch. Had a chance to sit in on several of their lecture series and know some of the folks in the dept. They have a Chair in Near Eastern Arch, so that would help.

MS? Probably consider staying with either school - local, better for costs, etc. PhD? Both Carl and Aren want me to spend some time at their respective schools [but unless I can learn Hebrew, I don't see Tel Aviv in the near future]. York in Toronto is looking like my best bet, the school has a good rep and I could work in some quarters at Bar Ilan with Aren to round out the arch end of things.

Big point in my favor: I am a disabled vet [Desert Storm] and recieve a government stipend [not good that I'm broke, but good I have an income] and that would not change if I went to school out of country, so exchange rates are something I have to figure in to things. That and reworking my grant writing skills. I haven't had to use them since Iwork in a couple of major medical centers and we were scrounging research funds.

Right now? I'm just scheluping through the application process. When you High School transcript is dated 1970 and your first Jr. College transcript is 1971 [and you've been involved with over 20 schools civ and mil] just getting the paperwork is an excavation in itself.

YKYBWTMSGWhen...

Your 3 and a half year old daughter recognizes the theme music for the show and climbs into your lap and starts talking to you because she know's you're actually going to set in one spot for at least an hour. And you start thinking "it's a good thing i'm taping this show, cause I'm not going to hear anything that's happening.":D
