I so agree with you, Anni, and I'm sorry you didn't get the treatment to which you were entitled.
Consideration for the fans is what it's all about. Making nice and being polite is kind of an obligation, I think, because without the support of the fans, professional entertainers (and that includes scriptwriters too) would be slumming it with the rest of us.
There are two guys I really appreciate from that point of view:
Brian May of Queen:
>After gigs, he will sign autographs for anyone who's bothered to hang around till he's changed and showered, and he has been seen outside a theatre still signing at 2 a.m. in the rain!
>I wrote to him once and he wrote back in his own hand. I was well impressed!
Neil Gaiman - author:
>Recently went on a world signing tour to promote his latest novel, 'American Gods' (recommended), and stayed at venues until everyone who wanted his autograph got one, on at least one occasion beginning at 1.30 p.m. and going on till 9 p.m., three hours after the official end of the signing.
Genuinely nice guys, the pair of 'em.
I will add, that it's also incumbent upon the fans to *leave the 'stars' alone* when they're 'off duty'.
I've had a little experience of that on occasions, like shortly after we won 'University Challenge', I was out for a quiet lunch with husband, tête-à -tête, and this complete stranger came up, pulled up a chair, sat down beside me and proceeded to talk to me throughout the meal! Once wasn't too bad - quite flattering, in fact - but it made me realize it must be pretty hellish if that sort of thing happens to you on a regular basis.
Best wishes,
Hatshepsut
