a) as far as we know, the "address" part of the glyph sequence is based on the genuine astral location - for any specific planet (given the size of the tolerance needed to cope with planetary rotation and orbit around its star) any combination of glyphs (and there COULD be more than one - I have a fanfic planned ) would always apply to ALL gates on that planet.

b) the POO appears to be mostly symbolic, and could not appear in its own dialling sequence

c) for the above reasons, I don't see that any gates could exist that would 100% uniquely differentiable purely by address, for all time.

HOWEVER, to contradict the above, but under very specific and unlikely circumstances, it is feasible, probably(!), that for a fixed duration (i.e. during the expansion of the universe), a planet which did not orbit a sun (or anything else), nor rotate, COULD have two glyph sequences which could apply to different points on the surface (or even, below the surface). The usual 100-200 million miles tolerance would be unused/unnecessary. Theoretically. Good scope for more fanfic?

I don't know if it is the topic of this thread but...it's hard to know what happened to the alpha gate, apha DHD, beta gate and beta DHD and where are they now...

I have a little theory about the alpha gate : the russians found it after "nemesis" and they used it with the alpha DHD ;
Between "nemesis" and "watergate", I think the SGC used the beta gate with the computer.

After "watergate", i think that a trade between russians and sgc happened, to take back the "normal" gate of the SGC;
So, tha alpha gate is in SGC, the DHD was in russia (before 48 hours), the beta gate in russia and the beta DHD?? where is it? stocked in US?

It doesn't really matter, but if somedy have another explication...

OK. As far as we know the russians had the alpha gate and trhey aquired the alpha DHD from the germans. The SGC had the Beta gate and as far as I know still has it as near the end of season 6 the russians still had a gate and DHD. THe SGC doesn't have a DHD as they had to borrow one from the russians, or was it area 51 in the episode 24 hrs.

AS far as I know, the way things now stand are russians with Alpha gate and DHD and the SGC with the beta gate and area 51 with the beta DHD.

The SGC cant't use the beta-gate because when we see the gate, the point of origin is the one of the alpha gate...
so I think they trade their gates with the russians.

And the russian DHD had been very endommaged in "24Hours"

EVen before Watergate and after Small victories you could see the earth glyph at the SGC was the alpha glyph and that was at a time when the russians had the alpha gate. Basically I think the guys at showtime just couldn't be bothered to put another gate in the SGC set to show that it was the Beta gate. This has actually been discussed in another thread so you may find something there.

Since we know they only have the SGC "fixed" gate, and one mobile one for locations, they won't be able to do MUCH to change it around. Probably applies the same to the DHDs they have. There will only be a couple, though they will need to have the POO glyph inter-changeable.

48 hours, when the DHD blows up, the buttons come off and you can see the inside and the buttons that activate what

i think that they would have to be able to do that other wise, how do you trasnport a gate!
