So did I, until I got the DVD. COTG (ep1) is rated "R" -- which my teenage son noticed, but failed to mention, so that we his parents were completely surprised by Apophis's "inspection" of prospective queens. Very artistic and very nude -- gratutiously so, unless you happen to be a teenage male . . . :)

Ah, but there remains that double standard about nudity. It seems both women and men are happy to see women in the buff -- something about the artistic "topography." But male nudes make many of both genders uncomfortable.
 
re the COTG nude scene: I'm still not sure why it was included - it didn't add to the story, except to tell us that Apophis was a bad guy w/ little or no respect for the host of his queen - the queen was the only thing that mattered - but we could have gotten that from just the clothing dropping to the ground - we didn't NEED to see the naked body ---

and that double standard that pops up all the time - not that I necessarily want to see all manners of nakedness all over the screen just for ppl to be naked, but if they're gonna show women, why not men too? We get breasts, and female full-frontal, but hardly even a butt-cheek on the males - what's with that?


and, re: the SG-1 DVD's -- well, here in the US, it appears they are releasing them at a snail's pace - one season per year in September -- (S2 comes out this Sept) - and if they're smart -they'll keep going! We've had to struggle to get what little SG-1 merch there is - denying the DVD market would be a bag thing ---

yeh, i read an article about that a while ago. there are naked, or mostly naked women in mens' magazines, and half dressed women in womens magazines. but no one wants to look at naked guys all the time.

Got into a long discussion about gender attitudes on nudity with my husband and son last night, trying to get two guys to understand the whole Freudian thing about why most women are not comfortable seeing full frontal male nudity.

After all, neither of them is comfortable seeing male nudes, but we are all fine seeing female nudes, probably because there is nothing threatening about naked females.

This does seem to be a long digression from anything really related to SG1, except for one scene in one episode broadcast only on premium cable and on DVD :)
 
Bractac? well tony amendola does have the kind of face and wide acting range that he gets called on to play characters from a variety of ethnic groups - tony stated once at an australian convention he was argentian/hispanic/ italian amd i think the casting folk presumed we'ld think he looked vaguely semitic and given spain's history tony may well have some remote arabic or berber ancestry??? however tying that back in with our theme - it would be good of the casting was consistently multiracial and multi ethnic!!!

There really should be more asian actors on the show and given the goulad took slaves from all over earth - the jaffa and most off world aliens should be from darker races or mediterranenean european? The aesir for some reason favored northeuropeans but if they took "even" samplings they may also be protecting colonies from other ethnic groups - baltic slavic celtic??? finns???
we've seen on egroup of north/ central asian nomads and psuedo semitic cultures and some hellenic/ minoan groups but no south east asians and only one amerind culture?

given there been have been mixing of various groups we should have some worlds occupied by people who look hispanicn/ metzico/metis etc or show a "caribbean" diversity of ethnic blending -

dont forget labelling PW "black" is rather "broad" he's Jamaican - it would be more accurate to describe him as Euro-African???
as his complexion and features show considerable genetic blending - and a very attractive blend too !!!

CJ is cherokee/euro/ african - i have no idea of the exact proportions but judging as an artist from chris' bone structure and features I'ld say mostly african with a fair amount of amerind and a smaller proportion of european

RDA is scots swedish finnish mohawk and i suspect a bit more amerind or metis than he knows of

(badly suppressed ironic giggle) actually the only "pure" anglo is probably Amanda with her classic English / Saxon features !!!

We do have a multiracial / ethnic cast but they do need to be a bit more balanced and use more non Euro types???

pity they havent done a shang dynasty still tribal ancient chinese culture - at one stage in the early neolithic the chinese wore clothing a lot more like that of malays and polynesians complete with feather headresses!!! ( i kid ye not! there's archeological evidence for that!)

I have no objection to "black" system lords but I would like to see more Gouald who are not Tok'ra or System Lords - we ONLY see the rebels and the psychos!!! There must be some "sane" Gouald who arent interested in fighting???

I do agree we need contistent diversity!!!
 
I have no idea wether the politically correct description for peter williams or chris judge would be black, afro-american afro-european or jamaican or whatever. personally, I go for "AGIP" (Absolutely Gorgeous Intelligent People) :)

as for "nemec": yes, the name is indeed czech - and means "the german". in ye olden days, foreigners weren't called by their real names (as they were hard to pronounce for the locals), but by the place they came from.

I guess it's a good point that nobody with deep roots in the "new world" is precisely "pure" anything. I'm glad someone has pointed that out. Any differences between North American people is going to be quite subtle. So even as "whites" they are racially diverse!

The US had a long period in 20's and 30's where African-Americans divorced themselves from their families and backgrounds and "passed" themselves as whites to be better considered for work. This event was only spoken about openly a few years ago in a TV documentary. I was astonished. I think a pretty tight lid was kept on the story. I'm still of an age (and I must admit background as well) :rolleyes: where mixed marriages were behind the hand talk when I was a child. Scandalous if you knew anyone that would do "such a thing." It tugs the chain of the "like or different" thing built into our brains. Or into American brains with such a long history of segregation.
 
I found it very interesting when reading the autobiography of cab calloway (a music god of the 30ies and 40ies) to find him saying that, back then, he was deeply insulted if somebody called him "black" or "brown"; as his skin was pretty fair, he considered himself "cream". there was obviously racism among the victims of racism as well; I was very surprised to learn this, but found later on the same kind of statements in the biographies of duke ellington and billie holiday.

We forget that just as there were many ethnic groups called and coverd by the term european likewise "black" and "african"

like peter could pass as ethiopian / nubian
but no way chris could !!!

(tho peter also could have walked around 18thc thebes in egypt and fitted right in as a courtier)

there were several types of african ethnic and language groups - many afroamericans have mainly west african ancestry but because of north-south across the sahara and west-east (from nubia thru the lake chad area to northern nigeria and beyond) trading routes some have non bantu ancestry or genes from other african groups or non africans - berbers arabs etc???

should we say african / european or ask which ancestral group the descendant most strongly identifies with - ???

like I'm "european" but while my ancestry involves at least six ethnic groups that I know of - I tend to identtify mainly with the celts and saxons and call myself anglo-celtic
but my ancestry includes normans saxons cornish scots irish possibly some norse and jewish and god knows what else !!!

perhaps we should ask the actors which they prefer?

anyone have thoughts on the asian representation thing???
 
well im afraid im ignorant as far as nationality goes, but there's shau'ri, there's teal'c's wife, and there's that female jaffa in crossroads: all good people

and then there's nurrti.

i think that's a fairly reasonable representation.
 
Going back a little (sorry I missed some of this over the weekend!), Spookypumpkin and Texanne have both mentioned the various examples of caucasion casting in evil and 'baddie' roles. The aschen, noteably, and also a few other less documented examples. Its interesting to see how the use of caucasion casting in the role of the aschen people, has commented on some issues in society today. I am going to have to make use of spoiler text here;
The aschen tried to use their advanced bioweopens to eliminate the human race, as we saw in season four's "2010" and in season 5's 2001. I firmly believe (and this is my perspective only) that genocide, in any form, is a particularly horrific form of attack, in any situation, more devasting than the war weoponry used in both reality and on stargate, (eg. either projectile, or staff technology), and is the product of a very malevolent and evil mind. The fact that it was a caucasion society, that made use of their technology is such a devasting form, is in my opinion, no coincedence, more of a statement on our society today. Make of that what you will, but the parallel, in whatever intepretation, is there.

Also, the season four episode "The other side" makes some very valid points on racism and discrimination, by noteably examining these issues in a seperate society. Once again:

the perpetrators were caucasion, in fact, the Eurondans are representative of the Aryan race that Hitler believed were superior. Another interesting comment on society.

In summary, although Stargate did originally seem to typecast their alien characters with the symbolic 'alien' races on Earth (and by that I refer to all relevant cultural and racial minorities, including African American and Native American), it seems that as it has grown as a series, they have focussed less on the sereotypes and typecasting of who the victims of racism are, and more on the perpetrators of racism, and the pitfalls of a global society, which encompassess all races and all colours.

i likened the Aschen to Hitler's Arian race, actually, when i first saw the ep. It was the way they planned into the future so much, as hitler did. Also they were highly advanced, as hitler's third reich society was.

just my view.
