Moral Support Needed Here...

Good Start

OK week one WeightWatcher weigh in and the total is..........5 pounds lost this week.

By the way Rowan there is a great site for low carb food at Carblife. They have a great supportive messageboard and there is a link to their shop. They even sell fresh bread but it is really expensive. There is also the lowcarb megastore online that sells everything but they are quite dear. I might give the bread mix a go.

Watch this space for next weeks result.

Have you got a link for that? What country is it based in? Doubt the bread would last to the uk if it's in the States...

Anyway, I'm not too bothered. Once I'm at the stage when I'm desperate from treats I'll probably be able to come up with something!

Progress... Well done! I lost 4 pounds, but I did have a few things I shouldn't before I read the book and realised I shouldn't...

Meanwhile I have an appalling headache. Could be having a cold (I am a bit achey too...) and bad neck and withdrawing off caffeine...

Giving up caffienated coffee was a MASSIVE big step to me (I'm a total addict), so I left it till I was established on the diet otherwise. I'm on the 3rd day without.

Foods

I'm in the states and stores - both on and off line - are available to me. I tend to look at mixes more than anything becasue I enjoy cooking. I weighed in yesterday [my day] and I'm down approx. 18 pounds in the 5+ weeks since I've started and quite happy with it overall. R

Right now the only bug in the progrress is a knee injury from 6 weeks ago that isn't being treated aggressively enough IMHO. The ortho appointment is set for June 12 and PT today told me the soonest they can see me is June 3. One of the ingoing problems of being a member of a HMO [ in this case - the Veteran's Administration as I'm a disabled vet and they provide my care]. Much like the socialized medicine situations in other countries, I might guess. I've called my old private MD's office and have an appointment to see him Monday [money talks obviously - and not his fault, I got the office staff and they don't know me from Adam]. Other than that, it's tuck my head down, put on my 'stubborn' hat and do my own rehab. I'm not waiting over two months to work on this joint.

I used to do bedside rehab for my patients [after it was ordered by the doc and the program set up by the PT] as part of my patient's care so I can probably figure out my basics. And I've got the 'sport brace from Hell' on my knee, so I know it's well supported. The damage is probably the result of an original injury back in 2000 [dislocated patella] and not too significant on x-ray so I don't feel I'm taking too big a risk and I *am* worried about the joint losing mobility and strength if something isn't done.

And I know I find this so increadably frustrating becasue I have been a care provider. I know how the system should work and it isn't. <sigh>

Ah well ...

I'm sort of a creative cook... My usual use of cookbooks is to look at them, think 'that sounds nice'. Then put them away while I throw everything that sounded nice in a pan, maybe with a few variations of my own. Following recipees is too much like hard work!

Actually one thing I like about this diet is that it's so radically different, that it's forcing me to be inventive and try new combinations. And of course I'm eating a lot more meat! Generally I only eat free-range/organic meet (I'm against factory farming), but I plain can't afford the amount of meat needed that way. So I've decided for now I'm allowing myself to buy any meat that's been reduced at the supermarket. Not giving them a profit for factory farming that way I hope... So instead of having roast chicken occasionaly as a treat, I'm having chicken nearly every day and cooking it all sorts of ways.

So here's one of my experiments (and the low fatters could probably eat this too)

1 chicken breast
1 fennel heart
1 dice sized piece fresh ginger
sesame oil
soy sauce

(NB: try and find a naturally brewed, wheat free dark soy, such as Whole Earth Tamari, it has a much better flavour than the stuff you'll find in most shops)

Heat some oil and soy sauce in a frying pan (use one with a lid, or for which you have a lid that will do!). Shred the ginger and let the flavours mix. Coarsly chop the chicken and fennel and add to the pan. Cook until done! Depending on how much oil you used you might need to keep it covered from the start so it cooks in it's own juice. If you can go mad on the oil though... just add more oil and soy if it gets dry, but I think I had mine covered for about half the cook.

Meanwhile... I found a link:

Carblife UK

Yep, they have a UK branch... Just off to have a proper browse!

The recipe sounds great, Rowan Green, must try it - thanks.

Marianne and Rowan, congrats to you both.:flash: :laugh2:

still making the small changes - went out and bought some new scales today so I can start weighing myself, I always avoided the scales.

Scales

Remember the big pitfall: don't weight everyday. Set up a schedule, like every Sunday, and stick to it. You're less likely to get discouraged with the normal day to day changes snf better able to see the trend.

Rowan

How did you know I weigh on Sunday? :D

Ok, at the moment I weigh every day, but Sunday's the day I record it!

I'M PULLIN FOR YA!!!

Weigh In

Weigh in this week, another 3lbs gone. That's 8 in total. Looking promising so far.

SamJack2003 that's amazing -101 lbs - brilliantly well done. I bet you feel a whole new person.

So far...

You folks are doing great! :D Bit by bit is the way to go.

Congratulations to all!! :flash: :star: :flash: :star:

Last Sunday I was down 2 pounds. I was feeling that was a little low... but I checked in my book, and for the amount I want to lose in total, it gets me as low average 'metabolic resistance' (sorry to the none Atkinsers!). In other words, for the amount I want to lose, I'm doing fine. That makes 6 pounds so far, so hopefully another 2 this week!

I'm aiming to lose a total of 26 lbs, so I'm well on target! I'm also telling myself off... on the last diet I was on, 2 lbs was a good week!

I guess my tips for the week... measure yourself! (I am getting small changes there...). And don't worry if you don't lose as much as the other people here! There really are factors that make it harder or easier to lose...

WAY TO GO! I'M PULLING FOR YOU ALL!!!

I'm pulling for you all! I'm still going also! At my plateo right now (means no matter how I try my body won't lose) just have to give it a little push over the edge!

I AM A WHOLE NEW PERSON! Went from a size 38 (4x) to a size 18 (XL in some things)! I carry a before picture around with me in case I start feeling sorry for myself or want to over do it!

Can't wait to see all of you "new " people!

KEEP IT GOING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WE CAN ALL DO IT!!!!

WAY TO GO!!! WAY TO GO!!! WAY TO GO!!! :flash: :star:

I like the way we Gaters can talk about something other than Stargate although in a roundabout sort of way it is connected because some of us are trying to look our best for an event. I think of this board as a sort of Gater family so even if we are posting in the wrong area we should keep geeing each other along. More power to us. Who says you have to talk 'Gate all the time. Variety is the spice of life.

Doing good.

You folks are doing great! I check myself with the ketosticks every 5 days or so just to make sure now that I've started adding a couple of things to my diet [nuts and such]. And the tape measure is a very good tool - it'll let you know of changes you can't see with your eye.

I'm planning on staying on 'induction' for as long as I can to keep the weight moving. I'm still dealing with a knee injury and not nearly a mobile as I'd like and don't plan on changing my program until I can begin doing a greater physical workout.

SamJack, that weight loss is just fantastic! I think carrying around aphoto is a good idea. I know seeing myself in a picture taken by a friend this last Jan was the finial push for me and being able to look at the difference you've made in yourself has to be a big support.

Rowan, you're doing great - and I know it's hard being in the 'slow and steady' catagory right now, but the fact you're still at it shows you'll win in the end.

Another 2 pounds lost this week! And that's brought me down to the weight I got to on my last diet, 8 pounds lost and I'm on a stone (x and 0 pounds...) so it's a landmark! Since it's where I stopped last time I'm wondering if it's a plataeu point for me... we'll see...

Also realised I calculated wrong. I'm actually aiming at 30 pounds to lose (keep calling a stone 12 pounds, grrr).

I'm hoping to lose a visible amount for SFX, all of it by Gatecon, then keep it off for SG6!

PS: Did people hear, Dr Atkins just died from a head injury.

KEEP GOING ALL OF YOU!!!!

KEEP GOING ALL OF YOU! I'M ROOTING FOR YA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :)

I'm rooting for you all. We will all be different people when we meet up in Vancouver in Sept.!

Have to email before and after pictures!!!!

Oh, this is a great thread! Thanks Marianne for starting it. It was you, wasn't it? :D :D

I'm too trying to lose weight, but I've got some more time since I'm only going to Wolf's SG6 in November this year.

I already lost some pounds and hopefully this trend will continue.

Of course I agree that we souldn't do it 'because' of a con, wether it be about meeting fellow fans or the actors. But it definately is a *biiiig* motivation.

You guys are great.

101 pounds, SamJack2003? WOW!!!!

My next landmark is another 20 pounds, but all in all I wanna lose about 50 pounds till the con. God, that sounds like sooo much!

But you guys gave me the motivation I really needed.

So thanks to all of you and KEEP GOING! You're all doing great. :D ;)

KEEP GOING!!

This thread is better than Weight Watchers & MORE FUN!!!

:rolly2:

Just keep up the support!!! Appreciated by all!

Amounts ...

Ya know Summershake, I thought the same thing when I figured out how much I *really* wanted to lose vrs how much sounded 'ok and achievable'. I mean, 60 pounds sounds like an awful lot. And it is, I'm not denying that. But I want to get to 145 again and that's not an unrealistic weight for me. It's not like I'm trying to get back to where I was just out of basic training [5'8" and 132 pounds]. I'm older now and have a 20 year old son - my body isn't quite the same.

As of Sunday, I've dropped 23 pounds in 10 weeks and am very happy with it. My husband and I just came back from a long walk at the local mall and I feel fine - energized and happy. I really wish I was still working becasue I'm never still, but I have to substitute other action for that now. If I can keep up the 1-2 pounds a week, I can be pretty near my goal by Gatecon.

Hang in there, Gal. You're doing great!

:D

Rowan

Thanks, Rowan. Your post was really encouraging.

I already lost about 60 pounds over a year ago. It was because of the Wolf SG4 convention in february last year. Sounds silly, but I knew I was gonna meet friends I made on this very board and Michael Shanks and Amanda Tapping and...and...and...:D ;)

So I was motivated and it worked - somehow. I've been pretty overweighed all my life and for the first time I *really* wanted to do something about it instead of just moan and whine. And for the first time it worked.

Right after the con (about a year ago) I started to gain weight. Tried to do something about it but had no mativation. So a year later, here I was - with 20 pounds more.

At least I lost the twenty pounds and am now where I was right before SG4. I feel good again, but I wanna lose another 50 pounds. Then I'd have 140 ibs, which would be just fine for me (I'm 1.76 cm...being from austria I don't know what's that in feet...lol)

Seeing you all doing so great has really helped me get more motivation. I guess it's a bit like Weight Watchers.

When I was tempted yesterday evening I went in here and thought: Pffff -- you can do it. :D :D

Love you guys (in a sappy voice) :p :D
