National Novel Writing Month 2006

Dear god people! *applaudes again* I'm sitting here struggling to write 1,000 words for an essay! Mind you, I know which one I'd rather be doing...essays are *so* dull. :(

But well done to you all! I want to read all these when they are done :D

Ugh, I know what you mean. I should be writing an essay myself right now (as usual >.< ) but what the heck! I'm writing some NaNo too.

I'm amazed at how far along most of you are! I'm only at around 4500 words  20 000? Holy cow. I think I'll be glad if I make that much in the month. I wish NaNo weren't during class months...

Mine's Old School. A ship crashes on a jungle planet :D Yeah, it has dinosaurs.

26,000 though it's worth pointing out that it's probably all garbage, still I'm enjoying myself in a weird way. It's a good sign for me when I type automatically and instead am concentrating on the scene in my head.

HoopyFrood> The possible pirates didn't stay in long, I did like that chapter so I may put that up as my sample Nanowrimo writing. Here's a little bit with Owen in. The two MCs have come up to the deck of the ship which may or may not be run by pirates which is being attacked by a sea monster. I should explain Takahiro and Kendall are both dragons in human shape: HOORAY!

“ HROOOOOOOOORGGG” the monster yelled. Kendall and Takahiro both had to jump out of the way, they ended up going in different directions so that Kendall was cut off from Takahiro who still had both swords. He shrugged and transferred one sword to each hand.
“ Why do you think they haven’t shot at it?” Kendall yelled as she swerved to avoid a tentacle.
“ I suspect it has too much water element for it to work!”
“ Right in one!” Owen yelled as he ran past.
“ Maybe I should transform?” Takahiro called back.
“ No you don’t! It’ll upset it even more, we’re in it’s territory! If it sees a bloody great lizard and it will go bezerk!”
“ Oh is that all?” Kendall asked.
“ HOOOOOOOOOORRRG” the creature called. Kendall ran under one tentacle, jumped over the next heading straight for it’s open beak ,she stopped just short and punched it just above where it’s nose might have been if it had one.
“ HOOOORG!” it cried.

Sketti> Dont feel too bad it it helps I think probably this will turn out to be absolute rubbish on my end. Gloriously fun to write rubbish but rubbish none the less. Yours sounds lots of fun!

Sounds like a lot of people are busy writing - well done everyone! I'm a bit behind where I wanted to be, but have just passed the 25,000 word halfway mark, so I'm happy enough :)

Are any of you in the London area? And if so, are you going along to the mid-month meeting on Saturday 18th (i.e. tomorrow!) 1pm-6pm at the Round Table pub near Leicester Square tube station? I'm going into London tomorrow, so hope to pop in there for an hour or two. Perhaps I'll see some of you there?

I was thinking about going I went to a meet last Nanowrimo I tried but I loose a lot of good writing time travelling. I've just hit 30,000 and want to try and hit 35,000 by the end of the weekend.
Keep it up guys

I've made it to 6K :) I'm so proud :) Plus, nothing has really happened, just the crash X-D Gotta love NaNo, doesn't matter if your beginning is extremely slow :D

So, I've got Marky Lazer on my buddy list. What are everyone else's names?

As I said, mine is chanters :)

Here's the very beginning of it for the heck of it :)

Joseph McGee, a kindly looking older man and captain of the ESS-07 Vision, sat in his chair at his command post in the front of the bridge. He was randomly bringing up the charts and sensor readings they were picking up as they trudged along the cosmos on the computer screen in front of him. He was beyond being bored and felt now only the mute restlessness of a body deprived of proper activity for over a year. There really was very little to do on a spaceship that more or less flew itself. The crew was more of a precaution, as well as PR, and so there were only a very few of them active at any one time. There were luckily just enough to make two teams for the occasional game of Kahiersball. Commanding a ship with a name that would go down in history sounded like a grand adventure back on dry land but it was distinctly less engaging once out there. He had never been very fond of space. It was too large, empty and monotonous. Yes, the occasional nebula was pretty and gave him a reason to flex his photographer's muscles but there were only so many pictures you could take of the spacescape and in any case, there was hardly anyone to look at them. Everything they did, from the sensor readings to the photography and the Saturday Science Symposium was useless as none of it would reach Earth.

argh too late to sign up now:mad: . Oh heavenly forgetfulness.
Failed once and well this year is even worse.
Writes in diary for next year.

This made me smile, it reminds me a little of the webcomic Starslip crisis. Keep it up. Only 11 days left  I'm starting to get low on names now , I nearly named a central character Kevin. Not that I have anything against Kevins ummmm...

Ready for the final weekend? I lost a day's writing yesterday, due to a work event, so I'm going to need to get my skates on this weekend to get within sight of 50k by the end of the month.

Does anyone else think they're likely to "win", by writing at least 50,000 words?

Good luck everyone - see you at the finish line!

I think I've hit the wall. Where exhaustion turns brain to mush. I don't have writers block. Too squishy for writers block. I'm at the 'what the heck am I doing to myself' point.

But dang-it! I'm gonna finish even if it kills someone.

There is a point when you find yourself with far too much caffiene in your system.

43k where I've been for several days without progress. Like I've suddenly forgot what to do next. My mantra this year:

"I should have stayed with SciFi!"

I'm at 42,800, but going into London for a meeting tomorrow, so should be able to get a decent amount done on the train...

As for writing good scenes, I gave up doing that a long time ago! Any scenes at all are fine by me at this stage, just so long as they add to the word count... :)

I finished today , the ending needs loads of work if I ever wanted to make it readable which to be honest I'm not sure I will. I want to sleep now mainly.

You all make me sick! Bloody overachievers.... No, really, congratulations Azure. I think you've earned your sleep. And good luck to the rest of you with the end in sight. I wish I had your determination and committment. I never even mustered the enthusiasm to sign up this year, sadly. Next year....

I'm on 45477 words and I'm running out of steam. If I can come up with 5 decent scenes to write I'll knock it off quickly, but that's the trouble, isn't it?

Simon - are you at 50k yet? Did you get your five scenes? I've just passed 45k, so a long night beckons, I think...

Good luck over the last 30 hours...

Aw...30 hours left! Come on, people, you can do it! Woo!
*Hands out water like at marathons...and maybe some ice for hand and finger cramps from so much writing/typing!*
Perhaps next year, when I'm more experienced at juggling course stuff and free time, I might sign up! Subject myself to this gruelling task! :D

:D

Thanks Hoopy - just what I needed! I've just uploaded my novel, and it's just over 50,000 words - so I've won!

Cogratulations to anyone else here who has done so too - and if you haven't yet, there's still a few hours left (depending where you are in the world), so keep going!

It's been great fun - will have to have another go next year.

Now back to the short stories, carefully written and rewritten...
