What comic books/graphic novels are you reading at the moment?

Just finished Joe the Barbarian by Grant Morrison and Sean Murphy. Highly engaging tale about a hypoglycaemic boy's quest to get from his attic bedroom to his fridge, through a hallucinatory world under attack from King Death. Brilliant artwork too.

Just read a Transformers hardback book entitled The Last Stand of the Wreckers from IDW. Its really hardcore stuff (considering Transformers began as a toy line) with lots of violence and dark humour.

Certainly the best Transformer tale I've read for a very long time! The hardback comes with great extras as well - including several 1-2 page comic strips and prose stories that build on the main comic!

Well worth the money!

Not a genre graphic novel, but I've just finished reading Art Spiegelman's 'The Complete Maus'. Been meaning to read it for a long time, but was prompted to get on with it when Spiegelman was on BBC Radio 4's Bookclub two Sundays ago. He was an eloquent advocate for his own work, without being in any way arrogant, so I got it the following Sunday. Well, well worth reading. I've also got Spiegelman's new book, 'MetaMAUS', which is a non-fiction exploration of how he went about writing Maus. Looking forward to getting stuck into that next.

Maus is a phenomenal graphic novel, thanks for mentioning the MetaMAUS I did not know about it, is definitely worth looking at.

A bit later on than these posts, but my copy of MetaMaus turned up this morning. Don't know when I'll get around to reading it, but it looks phenomenal.

Thanks again for mentioning it Patrick!

hi all - am new here - but i've just finished Locke and Key - a joe hill adaptation of a very lovecraftian theme. (does anyone read joe hill btw? he's one of the best new horror writers i've found in the last year...)
Now straight onto Scott Snyder's American Vampire ftw!

...this sounds awesome, i am off to find!

I've just finished the fourth Captain Britain Graphic Novel that collects the original strips from back in the day. In this case the classic Black Knight strip by Steve Parkhouse and John Stokes concludes (why the separated a story half way through is questionable) and then start the revamped character with the strip by Dave Thorpe and Alan Davis, and then a certain Alan Moore picks up the writing...

I'm now going to start Captain America Reborn by Ed Brubaker and Bryan Hitch.

(at the same time I'm making way through the pile of monthly comics that built up before my cancelling)

I've recently finished these Lovecraft inspired graphic novels:

The Courtyard and Neonomicon by Alan Moore

At The Mountains of Madness by Lovecraft and Ian Culbard

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Eye-Classics...7072841&sr=1-1

I'm currently reading The Lovecraft Anthology I by Lovecraft and Dan Lockwood, with The Lovecraft Anthology II next up.

I just ordered volume 5 of Chew so I'll probably reread the others over the next few days, until the latest arrive. It's not really the sort of thing I usually read but it was my favourite comic of last year.
I'm going to pick up Saga 3 and 4 soon, hopefully they're as good as 1 and 2, Brian K Vaughn working again makes me very happy.

Just finished Issues 9 & 10 of the Marvel Graphic novel collection
9 was X-men - Gifted, which was ok, 10 was - Perp's favorite - Captain britain in crooked world. Very Alan Moorish, a bit too omniversal for my liking, but very good.

Still way, way behind on my comic reading but while I was in the local shop on Saturday I noticed issues 1 & 2 of Earth 2, part of the New 52.

For the first time in an age I was tempted, and picked them up.

Basically they are set on an alternative Earth (Earth 2) where the superheroes, or wonders are basically the big three and their families - Wonder Woman, Superman & Batman.

Their world has been invaded though by Apokalypse Para-demons, and the Wonders sacrifice themselves to free their planet.

So it leaves a world without heroes but some new ones are just around the corner....

It quite often strikes me as odd that when DC resets its universe, it quite often claims to be going back to its roots, and then reboots with the Silver Age heroes - Hal Jordan as Green Lantern, Barry Allen as Flash - and not the original Golden Age heroes who started it all, Jay Garrick as the Flash and Alan Scott as Green Lantern.

Earth 2 redresses the balance slightly, as the Golden Age version of the heroes are reborn.

It is not totally divorced from the mainstream universe though as one of the characters from there turns up here - Mr. Terrific crosses realities and looks as though he will play a major role in the alternate take.

The series is written by James Robinson - a highly accomplished writer, most notably for his incredible Starman series with art from an artist I have never heard of, Nicola Scott that is excellent, suiting the story telling perfectly.

It's not the best story I've ever read, but it is an excellent one, being one step removed from the main continuity gives it a freshness that it might be otherwise lacking. An ideal companion perhaps for Beyond Watchmen.

Though I only get a handful of comics, I try to keep up with a lot of others and couldn't avoid the news about Earth 2, considering what goes down (bye bye big three in the first issue, and the changes to Alan Scott).

Also have been liking the sound of its other linked title, World's Finest, with Supergirl and Robin (female Robin, woot! Considering how bloody hard it is to get DC to acknowledge female Robins) becoming Power Girl and Huntress. If I could stretch monies a bit further, I'd definitely buy that and Wonder Woman every month as well.

My current ongoings are
Manhattan Project,
Saga
Fantastic Four/FF
The Hypernaturals

Manhattan P/Saga are great - just get them. I'm a big fan of Hickman so his build up without being plot is normal for me ha - judging on his FF runs its no biggie that MP lacks a little focus (for now)

Hypernaturals I had to pick up purely cos I've really been in the mood for a big Space epic (Annihilation) and although these writers can be hit and miss, they did provide me with some of my favourite comics. However 1 issue in Hypernaturals seems very congested - they tried to update you with the universe, characters, plot, and crazy new science language all at once. We'll see though!

Right now I'm re-reading - Planetary (doubt I have to give any recommendations)
and Pax Romana (Hickman is slowly becoming one of my favourite all-time writers) I fear his rise into Marvel mainstream could prove to be his downfall as he is supposedly taking on 18 Avengers in october...

I just bought volume 3 of Morning Glories, my head is spinning, there's so much going on, reading it kind of feels like hard work, a few questions will get answered only for so many more to get opened up. It is beautiful though, and I like the characterisation, but ugh, I have a headache. Still, it's awesome to see comics doing something really challenging.
I also picked up Chew volume 5, also a very clever book, but in a much more fun way, stuff rarely makes me laugh out loud, but the last page did, my favourite current comic I think.

Im enjoying The Breaker a martial art manhwa currently in my new Ipad. I wouldnt read ebooks but comics is visual art form that is perfect to read in Ipad with good reader.

I've just managed to read a single issue of Astonishing X-Men, which combined with Earth2 that l read last week sets a sorry record of late.

A bit Were Con, I'm hoping my new tablet will help me read the graphic medium a little more easily.

Tablets are good for avid comics readers like us. Im Uni student at the moment and i dont have much room for boxes of comics more than i have now. I can only buy big favs in comics,GN paper form. It will be nice to collect the stuff you dont re-read often digitally.

Plus we can buy comics that are out or print in paper form. I bought Lady Snowblood by Koike digitally from Dark Horse when its out of print as GN collections.

I read Daredevil 11-15. Waid series is still the best superhero in the last two years. Fun,near perfect portrayal of my fav Marvel hero.
