First Lines

She watches them below, going about their petty lives. Little do they know what is about to come.
 
Finding things out was her speciality, but when she started finding secrets messages hidden in the notes of popular chart music, she began to get worried.

The flight had been smooth, with not even a hint of turbulence, yet when we touched down and the doors opened, I looked out on a wasteland that had not been there when I left, not two weeks ago.
 
First contact turns out to be a let down because it wasn't contact at all, the new moon just hung there, shining brightly, reflecting everything and doing absolutely nothing, like it had for past 40 years.

(Ooh, this looks fun! And so many of these first lines are utterly brilliant! Here goes...)

"Sam felt the bone break under his fist and blood poured from the old man's nose. The room was silent but for the whimpering of his opponent -- each breath was held, waiting for Sam to die."
