The Revived Tolkien Trivia

I'm still waiting to get a twinkling of an idea.

Good question.

Edit: scary costumes, pair...

Oh wait!

It isn't Frodo and Sam us it?
When they put on orc armor to get through to mt. doom?

We'll questioned indeed if that's the case!!

Ah. Good thinking, Hope.
But I suspect that Grim's thinking of Beren and Luthien.

By the counsel of Huan and the arts of Luthien he was arrayed now in the hame of Draugluin and she in the winged fell of Thuringwethel. Beren became in all things like a werewolf to look upon, save that in his eyes there shone a spirit grim indeed but clean; and horror was in his glance as he saw upon his flank a bat like creature clinging with creased wings.

Hadn't thought of Sam and Frodo, hope, but yes, one could make an argument for them as they crossed the plain of Gorgoroth.

No, it was indeed Beren and Lúthien I was thinking of. Well done, far. A bell possessed of a spirit grim and clean to you, and the honors of launching the next challenge, sirrah!

Thank you Grim, indeed.
And thank you Hope. I was on entirely the wrong track until I read your answer.

Who's knuckles whitened as they gripped their weapons?
And why?

And I am back. This is one of the parts of LOTR that I was really ticked at Peter Jackson for eliminating from the movies. 'Twas in the "Scouring of the Shire", The Return of the King, after "Sharky" has been defeated:

[Saruman] walked away, and the hobbits made a lane for him to pass; but their knuckles whitened as they gripped on their weapons. Wormtongue hesitated, and then followed his master.

I assume that the hobbits were still afraid of Saruman, as he had just attempted to stab Frodo with his knife. Or it was the lingering fear of the terror and damage he had wrought in the Shire.

Is that the one you were looking for?

That's the one, Clansman.

I always assumed that their knuckles whitened on their weapons in frustration because Frodo had forbidden them to kill him.
But maybe that just shows what a nasty person I am.

So a muffled bell to you. And please set the next question.

:sleep::sleep::sleep::sleep:

As it's now gone 56 days without sight or sound of a Lochaber Axeman, I'm pulling rank as one of the OPs to set a question...:p

Where would I find rough steps behind a pillar-like stone?

Good one Py.
So having gone to Nargothrond and Cirith Ungol and Valinor, among others I eventually returned to the misty mountain where:

About midday, creeping behind a great stone that stood alone like a pilllar, Bilbo came on what looked like rough steps going upwards.

It was a tricky question, Hope. It had tons of possible answers.(Assuming I'm right. :))

Tricky maybe, farntfar, but AFAIK, the only situation with both 'rough', 'steps' and 'pillar' in the same location. You're absolutely correct - have a rough, hewn-stone bell (Clonkk!), and it's your go...

Sorry Py, if you thought I was casting doubt on the uniqueness of the answer.
There's them on this site as wot I would never question about things Tolkienian.
So you can probably tell me if there are several possible answers to this one.

Since we've all been on the trail of such things where would you find:
Two huge stones like the pillars of a headless door.

*I just pictured twin headless Agnus from Futurama as carved stone door posts*

o_O it's tricky

No-one else? No?

You'd find them on the Barrow-downs, between the House of Tom Bombadil and Bree.

"and suddenly (Frodo) saw, towering ominous before him and leaning slightly towards one another like the pillars of a headless door, two huge standing stones"

The Fellowship of the Ring, Ch. 8, Fog on the Barrow-downs

No flies on Py. That's the one.
A huge bell, stood and ready to ring to you Py. And the next question.

Hantanyel órenyallo!

There's a road that's wide enough for four to ride abreast upon. Where?

(quote needed...)

On the road from Drúadan to Rimmon in the Drúadan Forest, on the section in Stonewain Valley?

"Wild Men go quick on feet,' said Ghân. "Way is wide for four horses in Stonewain Valley yonder,' he waved his hand southwards; 'but narrow at beginning and at end. Wild Man could walk from here to Dîn between sunrise and noon."

The Return of the King, Book Five, Chapter 5, The Ride of the Rohirrim

That's what I was looking for, Your Fieryness - a set of bridle-bells to you, and the opportunity to stump everyone with a scintillating question...

Apologies for the long wait, all; work's been wearing me down....or at least stealing my time.

This might be an easy chestnut, but where was sunrise reversed? As always, quotes appreciated, but not required.

Ah - a nice one to limber up and stretch those ol' triv-ceps, Grimmy!

This would be Hildórien, in the far east of Middle-earth, where the race of Men first awoke.

At the first rising of the Sun the Younger Children of Ilúvatar awoke in the land of Hildórien in the eastward regions of Middle-earth; but the first Sun arose in the West, and the opening eyes of Men were turned towards it, and their feet as they wandered over the Earth for the most part strayed that way.
