The Revived Tolkien Trivia

By Durin's beard! The activity in this thread has escaped my notice.
Except for the chase of the three hunters and the battle at the Hornburg, there's always at least one hobbit present.
Durinu-tarâg! - by Durin's beard!

Also excepting the Paths of the Dead from the Dimholt to the Pelennor Fields...

I'd get out more, except I can't...

The journey from Dunharrow to the Stone of Erech to Pelargir to Minas Tirith is told in retrospect to Hobbits.... but I digress.

Also excepting the Paths of the Dead from the Dimholt to the Pelennor Fields...
Hmm! All the "Listen now to the heir of Isildur" speech, but I don't think it's that either.

Another thought, but it will have to wait until morning to check...

You're so close you can probably taste it, Bo (and Pyan too in echoing fashion)...but NOT with your digression.

Really? A dwarf?

Because I was just thinking the heir of hair... hair in Quenya is fin... Finwe (Hair man), High King of the Noldor, his heir was Curufinwe (skill of Hair man), his heir Maedhros (Pale glitter) abdicated in favor of Fingolfin (wise double hair), High King of the Noldor, his heirs were Finarfin (royal double hair), High King of the Noldor, and Fingon (Stone hair), High King of the Noldor in exile last of all the Hair Kings of the Noldor.

I was thinking... double the hair... double the heir... double the fun... double mint gum. Gum is tasty. But I guess so is any food or drink spilled on a mustache or beard.

While Tolkien is doubtless spinning in his resting place over this, I bow to your ability to blend the lineage of the Noldor with pop commercialism, good sir. Let's stick (may Ursa forgive me!) with the beards, though...

Is my memory making this up, or is there a bit where someone grabs onto a dwarf's beard to climb up something or be saved from falling? Is that why it's the heir to Rapunzel? In the Hobbit somewhere?

If that's even true, I'll leave the finding to others who've already done more work. Unless inspiration strikes.

Since I cannot find my copies of The Lord of the Rings, I'll throw out some ideas for others... my comments below are not official guesses, but mere speculation...

So it's probably beards, probably dwarves, heir, hair, spoken in front of a single hobbit.

Gimli, Aragorn, and Legolas related their tale to Merry and Pippin.

What about Thorin's speech at Bag End? The entirety of The Hobbit is a single hobbit running about with dwarves.

What about when Frodo met Gloin at the Last Homely House?

But then again, it could be feet.

What about Gimli fining Pippin at the Black Gate because he knew exactly what a hairy hobbit foot looked like?

And now I'll start digging through boxes for my books...

You're on the trail too, Good Hare, although you're probably better off ignoring the pulling of the hair. And Bo, your deduction is spot on; keep going.

In fact, you might as well as for a very SPECIFIC moon...

*worries that he really has become the thread-killer*

Gimme a minnit.... lemme check The Hobbit.

Edit: Turns out we all know the preceding sentence to what I think Grimmy wants.

"Stand by the grey stone when the thrush knocks," read Elrond, "and the setting sun with the last light of Durin's Day will shine upon the key-hole."

"Durin, Durin!" said Thorin. "He was the father of the fathers of the eldest race of Dwarves, the Longbeards, and my first ancestor. I am his heir."

Ouch!
(Slaps head)

Ditto. Too much immersion in the depths of the Silmarillion, addenda, Appendices and footnotes...

That's it, Bo (with an honorary mention to Hugh for his affirmation..;))

To bring back an old tradition here, a bell with a long beard to you, and the privileges of posting the next challenge.

*Takes seat in panel and assumes listening posture*

Well, Grim, you almost had to answer it yourself.

The seven of one waited for the first. Two others would come after the first, but before the second, who were not the seven of one.

I'll confess that I am not nearly as patient as Grimmy. Maybe no one read this yet... maybe it is unclear as to what knowledge I desire... Anyway it's all found in one chapter.

What a shame.
I was hoping it was going to be pointing at the arrival of the dwalves at Bag end in An unexpected party. Seven dwarves are waiting for Thorin (the first) followed by Gandalf (not of the one) and then one of the others etc. but it just doesn't work out.:( And anyway, Gandalf arrives last.

I had three (or perhaps four) instances with which I am hoping to trick you. I'll confess that the gathering at the beginning of The Hobbit is one of them.

Narky is on the right track with dwarves.

(By the way, I also prefer Tolkien's spelling of dwarves when discussing fantasy dwarves. Dwarfs is the spelling for real people.)
