The Revived Tolkien Trivia

Grim, I have not the faintest idea what that clue (if such it be) was about, but here is my answer: the Creator made the addition, which was elves and men.

Elves and Men were called the 'children' of God', because they were, so to speak, a private addition to the Design, by the Creator, and one in which the Valar had no part.

Letters, #212

That's the second (although not sequentially within the book!) of the two possible quotes I'd noted as acceptable, HB; good job! The first one I had in mind is further on into Letters, and the clues were more targeted to it.

*Selects a bell from the TT's private bell closet, cups it in his hands then concentrates. A fiery glow escapes between clasped fingers, then winks out. Presents, with "courtesy of Rhona Beare" newly-engraved on its rim, the bell to HB*

The floor is yours, good sir.;)

So, everyone's off playing ABC of Middle Earth, eh?

Here's an alternative wording: who demanded three, and gave four?

Sorry, I posted without doing the quote-y thing.

' "It must give us three guesseses, my preciouss, three guesseses." '

but he takes 4 ending with:

' "String, or nothing!" shrieked Gollum, which was not quite fair - working in two guesses at once.'

The Hobbit. Chapter V - 'Riddles in the Dark'. pp 74-5 in my version (with very nice illustrations by Michael Hague).

Whoa! Fresh blood! Excellent

Well done Judge, that's the right answer. Your prizes are a bell that only rings in 4/3 time (I don't really understand the reasoning behind the bells but I was scared to ask in case the betentacled thing became irritated) and the responsibility of posing the next question.

Oooh. A bell. All of my very own. I can open court sittings with it. I can hit miscreants over the head with it. I can...

... the next question?

Er...

*look of panic and the sound of hastily flicking pages*

Er... is there a time limit for me to pose the question? Because I've a feeling this is going to take a little while and I haven't had my dinner yet.

J

Of course there's no time limit! But I hope you're having sandwiches.

Seriously, a day or two is fine. That should give you enough time to read every post in this thread to make sure you're not asking a question that's already been asked :D

Bugger that for a game of soldiers. If it's been asked before, you'll have no excuse for not getting it quickly.

OK, here goes, and apologies for it being easy, I'm not too good at this kind of thing:

One of my companions seems to be noted for his apparel; two others for acute and sagacious features respectively; and the fourth sounds as if his story could be impressively fashionable (though only if you're British). Who am I?

J

Well, they've allowed me almost a day, your honor, so I don't see why you can't have the same......

(tick, tick, tick, tick.....:D)

Here goes ...

The answer is the pony of Merry Brandybuck's that Tom Bombadil called "Bumpkin"

Hey! now! Come hoy now! Whither do you wander?
Up, down, hear or far, here, there or yonder?
Sharp-ears, Wise-nose, Swish-tail and Bumpkin,
White-socks my little lad, and old Fatty Lumpkin

LOTR, Book1, ch8: "Fog on the Barrow-Downs"

White-socks being apparently known for his apparel, Sharp-ears for acute features and Wise-nose for sagacious. Lumpkin isn't really a companion of theirs (except temporarily). Fashionable story must be Swish-tail (swish = posh, tail = tale) which leaves Bumpkin.

Great question!

Definitely had to be British on that last one, HB. Swish NEVER equates to posh over here....indeed, one is more likely to think of Nike, although that's technically a "swoosh"...:D

Absolutely right HareBrain. And a perfect explanation of the cryptic clues. (BTW Grimward, I'd read that swish meant something very different in the US - sorry if it caused problems!)

So, from beneath my judicial robes I reveal a beautiful silver bell that bestows peace and harmony whenever it rings and I hand it to the Hare himself, along with responsibility for the next question.

J

Thanks, I shall treasure the bell forever, unless I pawn it.

What is the feature of Men most to be regretted?

It's no problem, your honor sir, and HB is right; 'twas a great question!

Hmm, a few ideas, HB. Alas, the uncut lawn and potential rain both loom in my immediate future....

*Contemplates multi-tasking with Blackberry and power tools, but can't figure out how to juggle Tolkien books searching for quotes simultaneously....:(*

Er, are we allowed to ask for confirmation of possible clues? Or rather, am I going to get an answer if I do ask?

To hell with it, I'll ask anyway.

Is the italicising and capitalising of Men relevant or just a product of a broken wrist?

J

(I don't get my bell taken away from me for asking do I? It's the first bell I've ever won...)

The italicising of Men is sort-of relevant, but its relevance will probably only be realised when you've found the quote, so I wouldn't pin your hopes on it being much use. Muahahahah etc.
