The Revived Tolkien Trivia

It sounds like the kind of thing Sam would say, to himself, but I can't for the moment think of when. I know you're not asking for the quote, but I'd like to find it. If I'm right, give me a hint and I'll go ferret. (I thought it was after the Council of Elrond, but that's the 'nice pickle we've landed ourselves in' line.) If I'm wrong, I shall go stand in the quiet corner.

J

PS I think I must be very naive. I never even knew you could google the answers.

Wasn't it when Sam was talking to Faramir and let slip that Frodo had the Ring?

PS: You can google anything. It has only 31 responses for the quote. :)

It's not Sam to himself, no. But Sam is involved - and Goldhawk is close in terms of "location".

BTW Goldhawk, I don't know how you got 31 responses - there are over 14,000 if you type in the whole quote (with quote marks) - and the top one is this thread! (But you shouldn't so it yet because that would give the answer away.)

I get this: Results 1 - 31 of 31 for "When ever you open your big mouth you put your foot in it". (0.29 seconds)

When I click on this: In order to show you the most relevant results, we have omitted some entries very similar to the 31 already displayed.
If you like, you can repeat the search with the omitted results included.

I get: Results 1 - 50 of about 14,500 for "When ever you open your big mouth you put your foot in it". (0.09 seconds)

So, I guess both answers are correct. :)

*Clansman emerges from mid-winter hibernation, dusting snow off his shoulders* *YAWN*

Anyone care to answer the question? *YAWN*

I don't think I'm allowed another go at this stage, as my guess was wrong. I know goldhawk came in after me, but that was only to refine my thoughts. If you know the answer Clansman, and you can manage to stop yawning, please step in.

J

PS Isn't it a bit early to emerge from hibernation?

No problem with going again, Judge - there's been plenty of times when two or more answers by the same person have come in short order...

And yes, Sam is close, but he's not actually the person who said it, and Goldhawk is nearly there as well...:p

I assume the Judge said that because above, I suggested the "rule" that one person couldn't take a second guess (following an incorrect guess) until someone else had had a go. I thought that if we no longer needed quotes, there ought to be some mechanism to prevent someone "doing a Gollum" and making multiple guesses.

But we've the new rules, O Great Tentacled One. (Well, new suggested rules.)

...The downside would be that anyone could make wild guesses, so i suggest that if someone makes a wrong answer, they are not allowed to try another answer until someone else has had a go.

And mine was definitely a wild guess!

Oops, yes - I'd forgotten about that. How many brain cells is it that you lose every day when you get to a certain age?...

'Save me!' said Sam turning white, and then flushing scarlet. 'There I go again! When ever you open your big mouth you put your foot in it the Gaffer used to say to me, and right enough. O dear, O dear!

The answer, of course, is the Gaffer, or Hamfast Gamgee, if formalities are being observed.

The Two Towers, Book IV, Chapter V The Window on the West

(I like the quotes, and will probably continue to use them anyway:D)

Should this prove correct, I tender over the floor to Master Goldhawk, who really was most of the way there....

That's the right answer, Grim, well done. I guess it's up to Goldhawk whether he wants to let you evade responsibility for the next question ...

Cheers, HB, and Happy New Year to you. May it be filled with Tolkien Trivia!:D

I'm happy to put forward a challenge if the Golden One declines, of course.....

Will do, most favored bird of Ar-Pharazon, and happy new year to you, as well. :D

Right. Who was too stinky to be endured? And as noted, I like quotes, even though I can no longer require them, so don't be bashful!

Grim, you can require quotes - just say when you set the question whether you need them or not. Some questions would probably be way too easy without them.

The Cranial Coney has spoken!;)

Please provide a quote for this one, my fellow TT'ers!

Are more clues necessary?

Ah, Yule Brenner in the Tolkien trivia. He would have made a good Southron king, or a Pirate Corsair from Umbar in the LOTR movies. He was the toughest of the tough guys in the Technicolor era of film.
